Now how is this?

in Feathered Friends2 years ago

A Happy Friday to all and some Ostrich egg shells here had a change of life as they are now bird feeders.
073.JPG

A brilliant DIY solution to cut some holes and shove some sticks through the egg shells for the smaller birds to sit on. Then to fill the bottom with bird seeds. Simple, but very effective.

We stopped for some coffee on the way back from a meeting and I took some photos of the feeders. A first to see them and the egg shells were covered in some bright colors. I would love to find out how the holes were cut, as ostrich egg shells are very tough and a hard knock can crack the shells.
Oudtshoorn, a town in South Africa, is ostrich country and I was stationed there during my army days. One ostrich egg could feed 6 of us easily.
But here now, the shells serve a different purpose in life.

But don't take my word for it, as here is the evidence that the birds like it.
112.JPG

The little female Cape Sparrow popped in and out to tell me that she liked the feeder:)
116.JPG

And maybe you saw that there was another bird busy to eat in the blue shell.
115.JPG

The good thing about the feeders is that the bigger birds like doves and pigeons cannot get into the feeders, so they can't chase the small birds away or eat all of the seeds.

But it was lovely watching the pigeons on their training flight.

Sorry about the clouds in the pictures but we are slowly building up for another storm that will land tomorrow.

That is the thing about us as the human sapient breed. We all think differently and some are very arty. A Klutz like me could never have figured this out even though I also stick to simplicity in the charity projects that I design. Some uses for the ostrich eggs were invented before, some as small flower pots and others to display paintings of the African wildlife, but this idea of bird feeders takes the cake.
Maybe you will agree with me and so may it be.

I hope that you liked the pictures and the story.

Another great idea for feeding the smaller birds, love the colours!

Perhaps to rid ourselves of plastic they should start drilling a hole, use wine cork and design for accessory to carry water once again, make it fashionable it will sell !LOLZ

Please send the rain our way, we have high winds nothing more, not a drop when snowfall happened inland last weekend either. Here I am back in summer clothing not yet seeing rain!

!LUV happy Friday!

Did you hear about the guy who threw his alarm clock while hosting a party?
He wanted to see if time flys while having fun.

Thank you and I thought that it was a great idea.

The San used the shells as water bottles and they buried the shells of water along the routes that they travelled for other travelers to find in case they had an emergency.
So I think that you have something to work with here.

I shall phone the HQ in prayer and ask for the situation to be resolved. So just you hang in there.

!LUV and happy weekend.

San folk now how to keep water fresh, no plastic!

!LUV and good luck moving forward, have a wonderful weekend.

Yes, they definitely know nature inside out.

Rain and sun here again today so nipped out late afternoon to take some shots.

!LUV also to you guys and I hope that you will get some rain soon.

Hey mate, Happy Friday to you too!

What a brilliant idea of using ostrich eggs as a shelter for small birds! Literally loved and more respect for the one who created it.

One ostrich egg could feed 6 of us easily.

For real? Wow that's interesting!

Good to see those birds enjoying living in that shelter. It's too surprising to see such type of creative ideas have a Great impact on ecosystem or someone's life!

Loved all the pictures and thank you for sharing this with us.

Have a Great weekend ahead!

And Hey also to you!

Yes, I also found the bird feeding idea brilliant.

For real indeed!
There is a baker's dozen, meaning 13 normal eggs inside each ostrich egg. So portions of +2 eggs each for the 6 of us.

A great benefit to the eco system, as the egg shells can also be used as water bottles.
Glad that you loved the post!

May the weekend also be kind to you.

interesting to learn ostrich eggs are tough enough to be up cycled into bird feeders like these! 😃 consider it the perfect hideout for them too, reminiscent of their time in eggshells themselves 😄 thank you for sharing about this clever find 😊

Thank you and yes ostrich eggs are very tough as each egg has to hold 13 normal eggs all in one.
I like your idea that the little birds will find it similar as their own times in an egg, I just hope that they don't think that the ostrich is their mama :)
Thank you for the kind curation
My pleasure to share and have a !PIZZA !LOL

Ah, thanks so much @papilloncharity and @pizzabot :)

Wow, that is an awesome idea with the shells that I have never seen either. I am probably more of a klutz in the art type visions lol.
One possible idea I can think of to make them is by drilling a pilot hole with a ceramic drill bit and then cutting the hole with a tool like a jigsaw using a fine blade.

I didn't train at Faffa/infantry school but know about it & you must have cooked if you were there in Summer. I lived in Knysna for nine years and went over to Oudtshoorn a few times a year.

Thanks for sharing this and it stirred good memories from back in the day.

P.S....I happened to see your post because @joanstewart reblogged it :)

Oh yes, a diamond tipped drill bit could definitely work. One could also drill along the line of the hole in order to get a blade through and then file the edges flush after cutting.

It was H&H (Hot as Hell) in a route march on the Swartberg mountain pass in summer and freezing cold in winter.

I was hijacked from Johannesburg to serve my time in Oudtshoorn and during weekend passes we traveled all over that area, so I also know Knysna well.

Great that you saw it and Joan is a long time friend.

!BEER

Yip, that would definately work.

I know about the Swartberg, so feel your pain, and did vasbyt close by in the Overberg and quite a bit of training in Touwsriver with the same mixture of climates.

That is great about your friendship with Joan. I have never personally met her but she seams a great person.

Cheers for the beer :)

Thankfully that was a long time ago, but it was so difficult with the blisters and such, that I remember it like yesterday. A 20 kilometer hike in full kit is not for the faint hearted.

We lived in the Overberg about 4 years ago on an apple farm and I loved the place.

Yes Joan is a great friend to have.

Here's some !PIZZA for ya.

True story and it really is an amazing place.

Ah, thanks so much for the pizza :)

Agreed and my pleasure!

The birds flying free look beautiful, even with the clouds. Nothing as beautiful as freedom.

Thank you and I am totally agreed. Nothing as beautiful as freedom and the skies and the nature.

😊🤙 such a cool idea. yea, some ppl are just so creative..

I also thought that it was a good idea and yes, we all have different talents.

!PIZZA

This is such a brilliant idea to use the eggs as feeders. Glad to see the birds like it too. 🙂

Thank you Lady Neli and I totally agree as I was also stumped by the simplicity and the logic of the idea.
The birds also think so 😉
