Feathered Friends Show me a photo contest: Big Bird round 12

in Feathered Friends4 years ago

I was somewhat concerned I wouldn't have a photo to enter, other than one I had posted on before, but it was my lucky day today. The weather finally turned nice this afternoon so I could get out and enjoy the sunshine. While I was sitting on my porch I noticed that there were no birds all of the sudden, I happened to look up and saw why. It was a Red-Tailed Hawk. He happens to be the biggest of the hawks in Missouri and is found throughout the state.

The Red-Tailed Hawk has a distinct rusty red tail that you see only from above. Their size ranges from 19 - 25 inches or 48 - 63 cm, with a wingspan of up to 4 feet. These birds of prey you can see perched on light post or high up in a tree, on fence posts looking for their next meal. They eat mammals snakes birds and mice, both the male and female share in the incubation and feeding of the young.

Where are all the squirrels at!

Oh they were hiding 😂 I wish they stayed hidden longer I have the fattest squirrels in the neighborhood.

No wonder why he was flying around. He was going grocery shopping.

hehehehe 🤣

Gorgeous raptor!
I saw today buzzards gathering and they were about 20! The biggest flock of buzzards I have ever seen.

Wow! There must have been a big animal dead somewhere near by for them to have that many.

I don't know, but we see them daily and they are hovering above oud residential area.

That is very interesting, I don't know about buzzards other than they eat carrion. I've never come across them we have them in the southwest, they are very interesting birds to say the least and do a job that is needed.

In my language the buzzard is called mousehunter. They must have put the mice and rat population down. However, I did not expect to see so many birds of prey above my head and I think they must be nesting very close to where I live.

That would be absolutely wonderful if they were, you may have more sightings and encounters with them.
