Unleashing The Mind In Nature

Sun Beach Mental Relief

Wind was slightly up, beach was calling loud and clear, a walk is needed on a beach once again, yes lockdown had closed the beaches, so lets pack a bottle of water and get the family down to a beach once again.

Woody did not recognize direction going down, yup it has been that long, once he was there two tails appeared, he managed not to break free in eagerness with his human family in tow. He got to swim in the river first time doggy paddle, not for long since the walk and excitement levels were excessively high.

0994Woody.JPG

Going back off from beach walk took a while longer with him sitting down deciding his next move. Perhaps we feel the same in life, moving into some scenarios too quickly when change in direction is considered we realize it all happened so quickly, let's go back for more!

Arriving on the beach first eye candy up is the Goat's foot or morning glory (Ipomoea pes-caprae subsp. Brasiliensis) in full bloom, with long tendril like rooting system above the ground covering the dunes.

0965Flowers.JPG

A hardy plant with valuable medicinal properties, leaves are used as a tea to treat colds or flu, while seeds ( I have not heard of previously) is used to fight against some venereal diseases. Research always teaching us something new in nature, the leaves for colds a friend told me about when we first arrived at the coast.

Another flower being enjoyed by a bee is the Arctotherca populifolia part of the aster family with common names of dune arctotherca, dune cabbage, beach bum or South African beach daisy. With gray silver leaves an attractive plant used to restore sand dunes, also makes for ground cover in coastal properties for unusual colour of leaf more than the flower.

Dune Cabbage - Beach Bum - South African Beach Daisy with Bee

Always a flower no matter where we wander, difficult life, a truly hardy flower will shower you with joy in the most unusual places, if you can't see the beauty go play among the thorns.

Approaching the river in the middle of the estuary which was open to the sea, an island had formed this was packed full by what appeared to be Terns, unfortunately they never took flight nor was I able to get close enough to see who was in the mix, possibly Seagulls as well.

Another little friend swooping over enjoying low flying skimming the water, eventually settled close to where I was is the White-throated swallow (Hirundo albigularis).

0979Whitethroated Swallow.JPG

White-throated swallow (Hirundo albigularis)

This small intra-African breeding swallow builds mud nests under bridges normally, on dam walls or concrete structures over or very close to water. Another lesson learned today is the fledgelings are able to swim short distance should they fall into the water below the nest site. White-throated swallows eat exclusively on insects in flight.

Finding places of safety to nest or rest, birds fascinate me in how they will arrive in great numbers knowing pecking order along the shoreline. Others find safe haven on man made structures, using whatever is available to protect the young and ensure feeding is adequate.

SA_Hive_LineBreak.png

A crab scurried off to it's underground home, Ghost crab (Ocypode ryderi), crustaceans along the coastline are varied, always something interesting to see around the rocks or on beaches.

I watched a young family where the boys were having a wonderful time, smaller one had just finished a short lesson in fishing, Oh Dad's can be fun on the beach when not casting out, passing on knowledge on how to catch fish when tide is pushing up into river.

Hope you enjoyed the beach walk with me, found something of interest to read about, life has many surprises going outdoors, I have yet to experience 'the nothing' some find. Even the movement of wind across the dunes creating never ending patterns have a life of their own, so get out and enjoy whatever is on offer in your region. Take stress out of the equation and let nature in...

0971Wind.JPG

On a closing note; the dunes are showing signs of more plants establishing themselves, sadly a lot of plastic still evident washed down the river after heavy rains inland.

Now that beaches and rivers are open to people, many teams will arrange removing refuse once again, this has become an on-going task for coastal dwellers who take pride in nature around them, this includes going into coastal bush to remove snares along with plastic pollution found in the undergrowth.

You've always been so supportive of this community and not just with me but the entire platform. Nobody has anything bad to say about Joan Stewart and that includes me. When I think of the SA crew, you're always on the list. Thank you!

💖 @dandays - The Luckiest Guy I Know

Oh Wow thanks - Now "I'm the luckiest guy I know", yup tomboy at it's best.

Appreciate your kindness, tis what makes this world go round.., even on a good day 😀

My last beach walk was about a year ago in Italy, a couple of days before the pandemic situation got serious in Austria. If I had known what will come I would have spent more time there.

Thank you very much for letting us accompany you at your wonderful beach walk, Joan, and thanks for the cool photos 😀

Congratulations to your 45th anniversary, my wife and I have still a few years left to be married for such a long time.

Beach has been so close, yet so far for awhile with being banned.

Ideal place to unwind with my son taking Woody for a walk up the river and swim, hubby went walking which he enjoys, armed with my camera (not the best place to take it with humidity and salt water,) I had fun...

Not sure where all the years went, they sure add up quickly and thanks!

It's strange, why they closed your large beaches, although I understand why they closed ours at the lakes where people can't keep distance.

As said, I'm longing for a long walk on a sandy beach, and my camera is weather sealed 😉

The years are running the older you get, but still it seems too slow to me while I'm waiting for my retirement ;) lol

I wish you a wonderful weekend 🤗🔆

Not only closed beaches, rivers, dams, lakes everywhere near water and yes it sounded crazy since sun is supposedly one way to fight this pandemic!

Miles of beach... I am sure many still managed to get down in more remote regions, closer to cities police were waiting to lock people up like they have nothing better to do!

Retirement; one day runs into the next, however you appear to never complete everything you wish to do. Somehow when we work that 9 to 5 we squeeze more time out of a day, perhaps that is why so many fall down completely stressed out....

Wish the camera was properly weather sealed, take a chance and clean when I get home not the best idea, for now will have to do.

Have yourself an amazing weekend hope you are off this one, some time to relax !BEER

Yeah, the same here, everything closed, but you are right, there have still been people - police can't control everything all the time, and it is as you say, they have better things to do.

I also have to clean the camera always to keep the rubber seals intact.

I usually work from 6 to 2, but last year everything has changed, so I begin at 6, but the end time is much later. Now I'm at home and my business laptop is running beside me ...
I'm working tomorrow and my short weekend will start on Sunday morning, but you have two wonderful weekend days, I hope 🔆

Your photos are beautiful and the experience you share with us is very pleasant. I love the beach, it is certainly very relaxing. When I feel stress or a lot of tension, nothing better than a beach bath to let it all out.

Greetings and blessings ✨

Walking the beach we all go on/off together, while there we split up so each has time to themselves to immerse oneself in different ways. Ideal time to relax, thanks for visiting @miriannalis

When you are amazed by nature you enjoy the hikes. I love to walk in the park near my house, I would also love to have a beach nearby. I didn't know about the goat's foot plant or morning glory, here I have seen that plant, it is good to know that it is good for the flu. By the way happy anniversary, it's always good to celebrate with mother nature as a special guest!🤗

Morning glory or goat's foot is an international plant of great value, different countries use it traditionally in various ways.

Thanks for the wishes and visit, always appreciated @mballesteros

Good your beaches are open Joan. Woody looks so happy to be out in the water.

Thanks for sharing your lovely walk and photos.

🌺 Happy 45th! 🎉

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed time spent on the beach, it has been awhile!

Busy time of the year with birthdays and anniversaries, taking a walk together really was a fun way to celebrate life.

Hello dear friend @joanstewart good afternoon
How happy you see your pet walking through the water, nothing more beautiful than doing it there.
Those tiny tiny flowers also bloom here, they really are very beautiful.
unaware of the healing attributes and benefits of this plant, I really appreciate that you have made us known
I always loved swallows, every year thousands of swallows come from the north to a town in Argentina called the city of Goya Corrientes.

excellent post as always, I always fall in love with your publication

I take this opportunity to wish you a beautiful afternoon

Influx of swallows happened while we were out watching sunset about a month ago, a little late but thousands on wing.

Flowers are life savers on the dunes holding them firmly together, this stretch of beach suffered huge devastation about ten years ago, now healing with dunes slowly settling more.

Thanks for lovely comment and visit @jlufer always appreciated.

That is good news, that the vegetation on the beach is recovering, nature is incredible, it always pleasantly surprises us

have a beautiful day

I hope that Mother Nature, whom you love so much, has joined them :)

Years have gone quickly once a see these annual markers pass by.

Mother Nature is always kind, out there to be enjoyed.

Oh Joan I LOVE that last pic!!!! It is so unusual - brilliant work!
It really is wonderful to be able to go down to the beach again - we have done it several times since the ban was lifted! Glory, you know it has been a long time when the DOG does not even remember the route, lol!

Lovely post! Thank you for choosing the LL to share it to! Hope you have a super weekend and enjoy a good glass of vino later today xxx

Glad you enjoyed the romp, toes were happy in sand and water, absolute bliss for a couple of hours. Also like the grasses growing not always about flowers more unusual appeal.

Vino is well stacked since last long haul (I did not run out but it was a tight fit) so now enjoy a sundowner beer each day with a delicious red wine over dinner. Secret to long healthy living 😂all the above, TGIF take a break and enjoy the beach!

Secret to long healthy living 😂all the above

I could not agree more!!!!!

Enjoy! XOXO

There so many things to enjoy on the beach not only the water. And you captured most.. the water, sand, grass, crawling creatures, birds, people...
Thanks for sharing your beautiful day!

Absolutely wonderful to go down and see life once again, it has been a long time. Have a great day too....

I spent most of my early life near the water. It is only was only in 2014 that I move away from the beach... and I miss it! 🥰🌺🤙 !ENGAGE
