宮島へようこそ - Welcome to Miyajima
Raveling through my pictures is always a pleasure for me, as it brings back lots of memories and stories and enables me to take a short break to travel on memory lane. There are still so many places I have never been to, but want to see. On the other I also would love to see some of the places I have already visited again to explore them more in depth and thoroughly. As for now, I will restrict myself to my photos, which is still very refreshing and uplifting. And I also love to share some of the trips I made with everyone interested, right now I am focusing on Japan, my recent host country and I also hope I will be able to raise some more interest in the archipelago here in the very far east.
Today we are going to visit the south of Japan, more precisely we are heading to the down near of Hiroshima. Located in a large bay is the island of Miyajima, which itself is a very popular tourist destination. I was in this corner of the country almost 10 years ago, and of course on my first and only visit in that area, I didn't miss out on this little highlight.
Hiroshima itself is still interesting to visit but also a little bit depressing because of the history events almost all of ou relate to this city, so it was good to find some cheerful distraction. As you would expect from a proper island, you can't just wade across and onto it while keeping dry feet, you need to join other travelers and day-trippers and bravely make the crossing by ferry. If you are not able to already enjoy this little ride, it's just your own fault, because when you approach Miyajima, you will quickly get drawn in the right mood and that special atmosphere that lies in front of you.

Das Durchstöbern meiner Bilder ist immer ein Vergnügen für mich, denn es bringt so schöne viele Erinnerungen und Geschichten zurück und ermöglicht es mir, eine kurze Pause einzulegen, um einmal in die Vergangenheit zu reisen. Es gibt noch so viele Orte, an denen ich noch nie gewesen bin, die ich aber unbedingt sehen möchte. Andererseits würde ich auch gerne einige der Orte, die ich bereits besucht habe, noch einmal sehen, um sie eingehender und gründlicher zu erkunden. Im Moment werde ich mich wohl auf meine Fotos beschränken, was auch sehr belebend und erfrischend ist. Und ich liebe es auch, einige meiner Trips mit euch zu teilen. Im Moment konzentriere ich mich auf Japan, mein aktuelles Gastland, und ich denke, dass ich wohl noch an Interesse für das Inselreich hier im fernen Osten wecken kann.
Heute machen wir uns mal auf die Reise in den Süden Japans, genauer gesagt vor die Tore der Stadt Hiroshima. Vorgelagt in einer größeren Meeresbucht liegt die Insel Miyajima, welche selber ein sehr populäres Ausflugsziel ist. Vor fast genau 10 Jahren war ich zum ersten und bisher einzigen Male in dieser Ecke des Landes und natürlich haben wir uns damals dieses kleine Highlight nicht entgehen lassen.
Hiroshima selber bedrückt einen aufgrund der Geschichte und Geschehnisse dann doch schon eher, deshalb war es gut, diese kleine gelungene Abwechslung genutzt zu haben. Wie es sich bei einer zünftigen Insel gehört, kann man nicht einfach trockenen Fußes hienüber und hinauf waten, sondern man gesellt sich mit anderen Reisenden und Ausflüglern und tritt ganz brav die Überfahrt mit Fähre an. Wer das nicht bereits genießen kann, ist selber schuld, denn bereits beim Näherkommen wird man schnell auf die vor einem liegenden Schmankerl japanischer Atmosphäre eingestimmt.
Aber warum schaut ihr nicht selber einmal?

If you take the train out of town you need to get off at Miyajima-guchi where you then walk over to the small ferry station to board onto a JR ferry board. JR stand for Japanese Rail, but apparently this company also operates some other means of transport. The ride over to Miyajima is pretty quick but a nice prelude for everything to come. When you get closer to the island you are first greeted and welcomed by a big red Tori standing in the middle of the water. Toris are the entrance gates to every shrine complex, and are a very characteristic symbol for Japan.
Wenn man mit dem Zug aus der Stadt herausfährt, und in Miyajima-guchi aussteigt, muss man nur noch schnell zur kleinen Fährstation hinüberlaufen, um auf die JR-Fähre zu gelangen. JR steht für Japanese Rail, aber anscheinend betreibt die Bahn-Gesellschaft auch einige andere Verkehrsmittel. Die Fahrt hinüber nach Miyajima ist ziemlich zügig, aber ein schöner Auftakt für alles, was noch kommen wird. Wenn man sich der Insel nähert, wird man als erstes von einem großen roten Tori begrüßt und willkommen geheißen, welches mitten im Wasser steht. Toris sind die Eingangstore zu jedem Schrein-Komplex, und sind ein sehr charakteristisches Symbol für Japan.

Of course, you can find several temples and shrines on Miyajima, in this case the Itsukushima Shrine and the Daishoin Temple, which did their best not to disappoint us. The Itsukushima shrine was built directly on the water and as I just wrote, its big red Tori gate stands directly in the sea. A very appropriate place, that's all I can say!
Natürlich dürfen auch auf Miyajima Tempel und Schrein nicht fehlen, in diesem Fall der Itsukushima Schrein und der Daishoin Tempel, welche ihr Bestes gaben, um uns nicht zu enttäuschen. Der Itsukushima Schrein war direkt am und teilweise sogar auf dem Wasser gebaut, und selbst das große rote Tori-Tor steht hier ganz selbstverständlich mitten im Meer. Passt und wirkt, kann ich da nur sagen!

As you can see, this is a great spot to spend your time shooting photos, there is enough food for the eye and for the soul. Even though red is not really a color that calms you down and relax, but in shrines and temples this color somehow radiates a different, slightly mystical or romantic effect. Whoever was responsible for the color selection in earlier times, has made a good choice. I guess red was the easiest to make and use, but either way, it's a great combination!
Wie ihr feststellen könnt, kann man hier sehr gut seine Zeit mit dem Fotoschiessen verbringen, es gibt genug Futter fürs Auge und für die Seele. Rot ist ja eigentlich nicht wirklich eine Farbe, die einen runter und zum relaxen bringt, aber in Schreinen und Tempeln strahlt diese Farbe irgendwie eine andere, leicht mystische oder romatische, Wirkung aus. Wer auch immer in früheren Zeiten für die Farbauswahl veranwortlich war, hat fürwahr eine gute Wahlr getroffen. Ich denke mal, Rot war wohl am leichtesten herzustellen und zu benutzen, aber wie auch immer, eine tolle Kombination!

Oh yes, there are also some real locals on the island. Like in the old capital Nara, many streets are lined with numerous curious four-legged friends. Lots of small deer cavort between the tourists and try to catch their very own piece of the big pie, and they are showing an astonishing amount of perseverance, which is rewarded over and over again. Kudos!
Ach ja, es gibt auch richtige Einheimische auf der Insel. Wie in der alten Hauptstadt Nara sind viele Straßen von neugierigen Vierbeinern gesäumt, Rehe und kleine Hirsche tummeln sich zwischen den Touristen und versuchen ihr ganz eigenes Stück vom großen Kuchen zu erhaschen, wobei sie erstaunlich viel Ausdauer beweisen, welche aber auch immer wieder belohnt wird. Hut ab!

If you move away from the sea and walk into the mountains you will be rewarded with fantastic views over the shrine and temple complex and the beautifull forest, which showed up very coloreful during our visit. Even more red between still enough green, and in between some yellow. Oh yes, nature knows how to attract us with its colors and shades, and as soon as you start enjoying this play which comes along with the gorgeous traditional Japanese buildings, you can't stop raving about it. Your camera might not be able to capture this great mood, happy are those who do not only see through their lenses, but also observe directly with their own eyes and minds, and try to store this fantastic sight in their memories. When I look at my pictures now, a big head cinema starts right up. And it still beautiful!
Wenn man sich ein wenig vom Meer entfernt und in die Berge spaziert wird man selber auch mit fantastischen Aus- und Anblicken belohnt, über die Schrein- und Tempelanlage und den zu unserer Anwesenheitszeit gerade herrlich gefärbten Blätterwald. Noch mehr Rot zwischen immer noch genug Grün, und dazwischen auch ein wenig Gelb, auch die Natur kann bunt, und wenn man das im Zusammenspiel mit japanischen Kulturanlagen genießen darf, kommt man manchmal aus dem Schwärmen nicht mehr heraus. Und eine Kamera kann diese tolle Stimmung oft gar nicht einfangen, glücklich sind die, die nicht nur durch die Linse, sondern auch direkt mit dem eigenen Auge sehen tun, und versuchen, den fantastischen Anblick in ihrem Gedächtnis zu speichern. Beim Betrachten der Bilder geht bei mir auch gleich ein richtig tolles Kopfkino an. Schön war's!

And of course we were not really alone on that great island, as the previous pictures might have suggested. Several groups of travellers of different sizes were coming and going to and from Miyajima. The island is in combination with Hiroshima a very popular destination for school trips, and also I can only confirm that Miyajima is a really worthwhile place to visit here in Japan, a country which is really not lacking in worthwhile destinations.
Ach ja, natürlich waren wir nicht ganz allein, wie die bisherigen Bilder vielleicht suggerieren könnten. Ausflugsgruppen verschiedenster Größe tummelten sich mit uns zur gleichen Zeit aus Miyajima, was einfach auch dazu und ins Bild passt. Die Insel ist zusammen mit Hiroshima ein sehr populäres Ziel für Klassenfahrten, ich selber kann auch nur bestätigen, das Miyajima ein wirklich lohnendes Reiseziel in diesem an lohnenden Reisezielen wirklich nicht armen Land ist.

Not only the local bipeds, also our four-legged companions were watching and observing us thoroughly.After a while, you get used to it, and maybe you just stare back and smile. Do you know that game? The one who can't stand their opponent's look and shies away, looses. So are you in?
Nicht nur die einheimischen Zweibeiner, auch die Gesellen mit vier Beinen haben uns gründlich beäugt und beobachtet. Nach einiger Zeit ist man daran gewöhnt, und starrt vielleicht nur noch zurück. Ihr wisst ja, das berühmte Vier-Augen-Spiel, wer zuerst wegschaut, hat verloren. Traust du dich?

A really enjoyable day trip, the short ride back then rounded up the fun. Especially with the autumn colors in the background, Miyajima put on a great show and delivered what it promised. Let's see if I can stop by again someday, unfortunately it's not exactly around the corner from where I live.

Ein wirklich angenehmer Tagestrip, die kurze Fährfahrt zurück hat den Spaß dann noch abgerundet. Besonders mit den Herbstfarben im Hintergrund hat Miyajima ein tolles Schauspiel geboten und geliefert, was es versprochen hat. Mal schauen, ob ich eines Tages noch einmal hier vorbeischauen kann, leider liegt es nicht gerade um die Ecke.
Das war es für heute. Ich hoffe, ihr schaut auch mal wieder vorbei, wenn es wieder Fotos aus dem Reich der aufgehenden Sonne gibt. Ich habe noch eine Menge zu entdecken, und freue mich schon auf das nächste Abenteuer.

Great photos! I only visited Miyajima once. Unfortunately I was only there for a day and the tide was out during my visit so I couldn't get the full effect. But I was able to walk to the giant torii and see all the coins people had stuck in the cracks for good luck. haha so I guess I've got that going for me, which is nice. Very beautiful island. I'd like to go there again someday.
Hey there. That must have been nice too, so different experience huh. Probably if you wait long enough you can have both views. I am still ravelling trough my many pictures of Miyajima and I would love to go there right now. I guess I also need to make another post with more pictures, as you said... it is simply beautiful there.

Feine Fotos! Da kommen gleich die Erinnerungen hoch, an den eigenen Trip inklusive Miyajima und die leckeren Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima :)
Na dann war der Beitrag doch zu was gut! Und Okonomiyaki könnte ich jetzt auch essen ;)
haben letztes Jahr während dem ersten Lockdown versucht, Okonomiyaki nachzukochen. War jetzt nicht immer eine Schönheit. Hat aber gut geschmeckt. Die Osaka Variante ginge wahrscheinlich einfacher aber uns schmeckt halt "leider" die aufwendiger mehr
Wir haben das auch schon ein paar Mal gemacht, wenn wir zu Besuch in der Heimar waren. Wichtig ist das richtige Mehl, und dann darf da ja eigentlich rein, was immer man mag. Wir hatten dazu eine Teppanyaki-Kochplatte genommen, da kann man mehree nebeneinander brutzeln. Und am besten macht man das draußen ;)
Ja so eine Kochplatte hilft sicher. Und auch grosse Pfannenwender. Mit den handelsüblichen Größen war das ganze Wenden meist ein Massaker 😭😅
