People keep servants to save time, focus on careers, and manage household tasks like cleaning and childcare. Hiring a domestic helper is often seen as a lifestyle choice that frees up energy for more important activities, but it can also be a way to ensure a home is cared for when the owner is away, providing convenience and peace of mind.
There were many instances in India that highlights that when we get friendly or even let the servants to get frank with us, they exploit the trust and faith. They end up robbing, theft, or even physical abuse. These days, it is quite tough to get a decent servants. There are certain qualities that keeps a good servant stand out from others. Highlighting the different character of servants, Sanskrit says ;
अलसं मुखरं स्तब्धं क्रूरं व्यसिनं शठं |
असन्तुष्टमभक्तं च त्यजेद्भृत्यं नराधिपः ||
Alasam mukharam stabdham krooram vyasinam shatham.
Asantushtaamabhaktam cha tyajedbhrutyam naraadhipah.
Alasam = lazy.
Mukharam = talkative.
Stabdham = arrogant, slow.
Krooram = cruel.
Vyasinam = addicted to vices.
Shatham = wicked.
Asantushatamabhaktam = asantushatm +
abhaktam.
Asantushtam = unhappy, discontented.
Abhaktam = not devoted to his master.
Cha = and.
Tyajedbhrutyam = tyajet + bhrutyam.
Tyajet = abandon. dismiss.
Bhrutyam = a servant.
Naraadhipah = a king.
i.e. O King, you should abandon (not keep in your service) your servants who are lazy, talkative, lethargic, cruel, addicted, wicked, dissatisfied and who do not have any loyalty towards you.
Through this proverb, the bad qualities of servants have been described and advice has been given to abandon such servants or not to keep them in service. A servant should be humble, compassionate, and committed, with a mindset of seeing and meeting the needs of others rather than their own. Other qualities include being persistent, responsible, courageous, kind, patient, and dedicated to their service, whether it's for a household, a community, or a higher power.
