~ Braids ~

in Ladies of Hive4 years ago

Greetings pupil.

Good Afternoon to all. I have seen changes and I think there are times we should address the change. I have met many people who are not aware of many past events but they have a say about the present, there is nothing wrong in it but I feel knowing the past is better than not knowing. Knowledge is always the key. It has always been. So, let me take you all to a part in the past which you might have knowledge about or you plainly missed it and it is perfectly fine to miss.

The trauma of braids. I am not talking from any bookish knowledge or help from google, it is totally my personal experience back in the old days. In my society or where I used to live, it was not a necessity for female children to wear scarf at school, so up till I was in class 5, I never wore scarf for the hijab purpose or simple for covering that is.

Also we used to have combine classes and our society was such that we used to mix around with people a lot, although little was I an extrovert. I would precisely say, it was such moments that made me closer to being an introvert than being an extrovert. Comfort zone mostly plays a major role.

The girls with braids always had this extra caution to make if they knew the consequences that is and if they didn't know, then they had to face the bullying. Male and female, all types of children would take a shot at pulling the hair by the braids or open it up and make fun of all sorts.

That is the scenario when you are a mere kid and when you start growing up, it used to get more bothering. Braids make you look ugly, bald and so not. People would throw snide remarks whenever they could and not even bat an eyelash after doing so. Starting from close relatives to classmates, they all would bully me over this by giving slash comments. All I did was bear it at that time, I was still learning. Slowly and steadily I started to get over the habit of making braids and I was thinking that let me try other hairstyles and by then I grew up and I would wear scarf and never had to face those issues.

Now, not now exactly, but precisely from 2017 onwards I have seen people accepting braids as a fashion trademark and I have seen celebrities doing it too. Now, it is part of fashion. No one would bully you over it anymore, if anyone will, they will be insulted instead and will be called backdated or something else. Being backdated is not an insult but all I am trying to say is that making braids out of your hair is now a new style, a new fashion and a new trend.

It is funny how no one now remembers about the black days. It is funny and also good in a manner that no one is having to remember the traumatic hours. Life is complicated and has its own style of making us keep up with it. Trends come and go, cultural values change and develop, and ultimately we all stick together or are just stranded with our own sensibilities.

To me what is important? To me, our sensibilities, our perspective is important. Braids is a simple example of a comfort zone with hairs and this was a subject to bully. Such low level of thinking is not appreciated. We all are thriving to be up on the ladder of self development, but are we able to reach their with such hesitant steps? No. We are to be more courageous and brave with our choices and decisions. Also, be a seeker of knowledge, it is not bad.

I used to do braids all my life. It is recently that I am trying all the other styles too. Back in past, I used to be called BABY because of my braids. Shit happens.

Yes, shit surely happens. Do try other styles willingly not by force.

Very surprising to hear this from your end. Indeed it's good to be knowledgeable about the past. As @philomenob has written, in Nigeria, braids is like a general lifestyle and hairstyle from distant past. It has always been. We adore it, we love it and we're very much allowed to do it.
I'm happy they've been some evolving from your end. Sorry you had to go through that while growing up. Well done.

Yes, I have heard about braids being a fundamental signature hairstyle from the very past but here is where it started to pinch me, that as it is a normal hairstyle, why would we be bullied at some other part of the world for it. At the end of the day, it is just a pretty beautiful hairstyle. Thank you for supporting. I am happy that at least many people didn't even have to face it.

I’m shocked to hear that you were bullied because your hair was braided. In this part of the world where I’m from and where I live, as a girl having your hair in braids is the norm. I’m Nigerian and the culture here as a primary and secondary school student is to braid your hair as a girl, or cut it short (very low). Asides from schooling, that’s also how most children and teenagers take their hair, though we also use extensions. And adults and older teenagers may also use wigs. But then, having our hair in braids has always been a thing with us. I wish you didn’t have to go through what you did.

Anyways, fashion comes around. Things thought to be strange could just suddenly gain widespread acceptance and things once accepted could just suddenly turn strange.

So true, I agree with you. This world is amazing and bitter too, but the best part of it all is that we learn and develop towards a better change.

After growing up I was more sound and I did my research and then I found out that many braid their hairs and as you said it is part of a norm. I felt overwhelmed, in one part of the world which is accepted, in another it is not. In one part, where everyone is happy on another they are not. Even after media moved in our life, we are all still lost. It is quite a sad thing but I believe in hope and I do hope that things will change for the better tomorrow.

It is quite a sad thing but I believe in hope and I do hope that things will change for the better tomorrow.

I hope so too.
