I wouldn’t have apologised. I take everything as a compliment unless the evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. In this case it was obvious you were joking — hence the laughter. And if he had a problem with you, why not take it up with you, rather than blabbing to your friend? People are far too bloody sensitive.
Fair point. I would still always apologize. These things do influence my behavior towards the people, though. I will be a lot more cautious and distanced.
