We Talk Friday
(WTF)
This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 73:
1. How hard is it?
I don't get it. Every day in the US around 133 people suicide and there are about 60 murders each day also. Yet, it seems nearly impossible to kill someone with a "lethal" injection. Christa Pike would have had the dubious honour of being the first woman put to death in Tennessee for 200 years, but they botched the procedure and she not only lived, her condition might be too bad to put her to death again. Like what?
Around 190 overdose deaths in the US every day.
Now, rather than using past the use by date pentobarbital as the lethal injection, why not just use a healthy dose of fentanyl instead? It is pretty effective as people die with just a small amount laced into other drugs and I am sure it is cheaper to buy and can be bought on many street corners.
Problem solved.
Note: I am not a death penalty supporter.
(Soon we will be encouraged to end our lives so the rich may live richer)
2. Putin huylo, Oi Oi Oi
Finland played Belarus in a "controversial" football game in Helsinki, due to Belarusian support for the Kremlin and its war in Ukraine. Ukraine's ambassador wanted the game cancelled or shifted, but then we would have missed out on scenes like this tifo from the fans:

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko as a cockroach.
The crowd was also chanting "Putin huylo!" throughout the match which is Russian for,
Putin is a dick!
I am not a fan of politics in sport at all, especially when the sportspeople punished are coming from autocratic and violent regimes. Even if they wanted to, they can't speak out against the regime out of fear for themselves and families, but if they don't they are treated as supporters. That is bullshit.
The game ended 0-0
But 100% - Putin is a dick.
8===D
3. We got them
"We had them under view for a long time, and we got them."
This is what Trump said about the people who were captured in the UK near an airport and he also claimed that they were planning to do "big damage" - he does have a pretty impressive vocabulary. Apparently, the US and UK had been working closely together which led to the arrests.
However....
The call to emergency was from a local woman on her way back to her farm and police arrested them about 25 minutes later. So if they were being watched by the US and UK anti-terror units and the like, where were the agencies? Perhaps they were hoping the attack would go through and they could drum up some more war support.
However, all they had in the back was some petrol apparently, with "no viable explosive devices" at all. And then, due to the lack of whatever was necessary to hold them, they had all been released oon bail the next day, which means they aren't seen as a threat to the public.
More political nonsense, by the looks.

I’d never heard of Christa Pike, but the botched execution doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. That’s government for you!
It happens so often. How hard is it just to keep adding morphine? Isn't that going to do the job 100% of the time?
I love how people pointed out it wasn't a lethal injection in her case, but just an injection. I think it's wild that she could be in jail that long and they only finally get around to it now. The American justice system is just mental.
Yep, seems like fentanyl has a good track record for killing people.
I wonder what happens now. Despite the horror of her crime, I don't think she 'deserves' to die at this point, but then, what kind of life is it on death row? I'd choose the fentanyl.
I have often said that I oppose the death penalty in large part because I do not trust the government enough to believe they can administer just trials and sentences. Besides, the state is in no position to act as a proxy for the victim to seek revenge.
First, if there is no victim, there is no crime, and the jails are full of people who have harmed no one even if the trials were entirely on the up-and-up under the "law."
Second, numerous death penalties have been overturned, sometimes posthumously, because the courts are corrupt and eager for conviction rates over real justice, especially when the prosecutors are almost never held accountable for their actions.
Third, if there is a victim, restitution should be the goal, not revenge. Imagine if she had spent 30 years doing something productive to pay for her incarceration and to support the family of her victim. Instead, victims are taxed for warehousing prisoners.
"Call god and order the return of..."
Closes the case, even if the real criminal escapes.
This is the thing I hate. In the US, prison is a business. What a waste of taxpayer money.
Restitution should always be the goal. Death row is absolutely abhorrent.
Apparently she's unconscious and on a ventilator from the effects of the lethal drugs.
That's crazy. Again at taxpayers expense, not that that's the bigger issue here.
"just an injection"
:D
Seems to go with much of what they do.
I might choose the fentanyl without being on deathrow.
Hahaha. Either that or nice cup of tea mate xx
There was a recent sportsball game between Israel and Ireland, with considerable disdain shown in public commentary for the Israeli team. I detest the government of Israel, but I am deeply uncomfortable with extending that distaste to the citizenry, or even state-sponsored athletes. This provides a lot of cover for actual antisemitism, or other forms of racism/nationalism as the case may be. That said, sports is one of the few venues where public outcry cannot be easily silenced either. More government "leaders" should be represented as vermin, too.
I agree with you 100%. Don't blame the sports people, but use the occasion as an opportunity to speak out as tyranny and stupidity of government.
I think Russia should be completely isolated, kind of reverse iron-curtain, if that was implemented the regime would implode by itself... But no we are going to be playing with the oppressive regime until it goes completely insane and decides to launch a few tactical nukes towards the waffling European capitals that can't really get their shit together and really help out Ukraine to put an end to this debacle...
I agree. But I also think that US should be isolated completely, because the same thing will happen. Implosion. If you want a better world, one country can't take increasing amounts of resources and expect to continue that way. Be part of the world, or not.
Obviously I have a conflict of interest when it comes to USA, so I respectfully disagree :)
Was the Finland v Belarus as controversial as Ireland v Israel. I'm not a football fan, but I'm disappointed the Irish team didn't have more backbone, at least they won, but black armbands and hanging ur head for the Isr anthem are rather weak gestures imo
Not sure, but Finland has been a big supporter of Ukraine over the last years, because well--- the border with Russia. I still see it as sport, regardless of the politics.
I suppose the Winter War remains a topic of nationalistic memory.
Yes. And pride. And sadness.
I don't remember if I said this in the past. A while back our favorite neighbour's granddaughter's dog was hit by a car. The dog had to have a costly operation but she recovered. Yesterday our favorite neighbour herself was hit by scooter and hit her head so she was taken to the hospital. But it seems that she is feeling well enough and should be released home today. It is interesting that both the family dog and one of her owners were hurt in such similar situation and both survived. Also I wonder how fast that damn scooter had to be going?
It is quite weird that a person can be in a condition so bad that he can't be killed.
that chant is quite popular here in Lithuania as well.
Lots of people around the world have been killed by getting hit by someone on an electric scooter. Hope your neighbour is okay.
It should be at all sporting events.
I think it is fair to question things when they don’t add up, although it is also easy to fill in the gaps with our own assumptions when we don’t know the full story.
They say assumptions are dangerous, but so is not thinking about what is in the gaps of life :D
Trump does everything to justify the war
Everything except ask Congress to properly declare it as required by the Constitution he swore to uphold.
It is being dismantled. No longer worth the paper it is written on. Or parchment... or leather? :D
Have you read Lysander Spooner's No Treason?
It isn't a war.
I really wonder the cause of all this death, here and there. My uncle said a huge percentage of death-rate is encouraged by the changing of the world, and I agree with his words.
This isn't new. Women attempt suicide more often than men, but it seems more like this is often a performance to cry for help by extreme means, because they do not succeed as often as men, who seem to often decide, "nope, I'm out" and act on it very effectively. There is also very little mental health support for men despite lots of lip service, and seeking help can have punitive effects whether intended or not.
Many of the "gun death" statistics in the US are suicides. This is sometimes cited as furtehr evidence guns need to be banned to prevent acts of desperation. However, the US does not have an overall suicide rate higher than other countries, and it's not like poisons, drugs (hello again, fentanyl) asphyxiation, knives, high places, railroad crossings, etc. would go away even if all guns could be removed magically.
Tangential note: I had the misfortune to see the aftermath of a train vs. pedestrian collision many years ago. It was a double track. The near train passed, and another oncoming train on the far track was out of sight. Instead of waiting for a clear view, the pedestrian immediately started across when the near train cleared the path, and walked straight into the afterlife as a consequence. This was an accident, not a suicide as far as I know, but family connections to the railroad industry suggest this is an all-too-common tragedy engineers are forced to witness from the cab, helpless to stop or swerve thanks to physics, whether the death is deliberate or accidental.
I think it also comes down to the method. Men are more likely to use a gun, women poison.
And it is worse now. There is something I have noted and brought up with healthcare professionals and they do not believe me. 2 million years of human evolution where men have laregely been told to keep their feelings private, but listen to women. And now they have been conditioned to open up about their feelings. Great. Except, women have had 2 million years of men keeping their feelings private and haven't learned how to deal with emotionally open men.
Death by train is relatively common here. It is easy and final.
I agree with you, "its not a new thing". But for someone blowing their head up because of some challenges they face, is crazy.
I haven't seen or heard about someone blowing their head up in my country, they either hang themselves or take poison.
But all are still crazy.
I live with chronic physical pain. I can understand why someone would decide it needs to end. Psychological pain is even worse.
Where do you live and how are people dying?
They are many ways people die and I was actually referring to suicide, how some people develop this harden heart of ending their own life without a second thought. I am from Nigeria, and the only way I have seen a person commit suicide is by hanging or taking poison.
We have so much crazy stuff going on locally lately, I haven't been paying as much attention to the global news. It would totally deplete you if you tried!
Thanks
