One of the biggest questions on my mind lately is do I need to take my SLR (big camera), Nikon D750 with me on vacation or can I just take my cell phone, a Google Pixel 7 Pro?
I recently returned from a long trip to England. As I was editing pictures from the Henry Moore Estate I realized I had a lot of pictures to compare. The lighting was gorgeous, just after a rain storm.
What do you think?
Since the pictures are small it would be helpful to click on them and see them larger.
I also realize that the biggest difference is going to come in the enlarging. I will get to that soon. I always print pictures from my summer travels for my office for the upcoming school year. Right now I thought it would be interesting to see what you think about these pictures that were taken with two different cameras at virtually the same time.
Which do you prefer?
1- Left or Right or close enough?
2 Left or Right or close enough?
3 Left or Right or close enough?
4 Left or Right or close enough?
5 Left or Right or close enough?
6 Left or Right or close enough?
7 Left or Right or close enough?
8 Left or Right or close enough?
9 Left or Right or close enough?
10 Left or Right or close enough?
11 Left or Right or close enough?
12 Left or Right or close enough?
If you are really interested here is a link to all the pictures I picked out to compare.

I played a bit of a guessing game as I scrolled through these. I used to own a D750, so I would like to think that I am familiar with its image-making characteristics, and the known issues and elements that commonly occur with typical F-Mount glass.
I did a pretty good job of detecting which was which, especially when I later looked at the smug mug page.
The conclusion to me is the adage that "the best camera is the one you have with you." Earlier this week, I went around town to take some photos for a video-art project that I am working on. I took my phone, because I knew that taking my Z series cameras and glass with me was going to yield a result very similar to the outcome I desired, and frankly - I didn't want to carry them around all day.
I don't think that it is "lazy" to use a phone over a camera, but there are situations where the bigger sensor will absolutely have an advantage over the phone. There's only so much that computational photography can do to light.
To use light, you still need to gather it, fix it, and use it with intent.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, the camera is the one with you. I just have to realize that I can go on vacation without my SLR. This is showing me I can. I also had a great thought- when there are pictures I really want to be special I can switch to RAW.
I regret getting rid of my D750, hang onto yours, no matter what. And thank you for creating this community, I will be posting stuff in it in the future, its a good place at the intersection of my ramblings and Art :)
Thank you for your Art is a threat post. I read it and the comments yesterday and have been thinking about it. That is what I wanted, for people to talk about art. I will hang on to the Nikon like I did the Canon. Actually I am letting my friend's son use the Canon. If he wants to be a photographer or even test it out I would really enjoy giving him a camera be a part of that journey.
I plan on turning my Master's thesis "Visions of Death" into a series of posts with videos, so hopefully that will get a few people wandering through this community. We have a lot of artists making stuff, but, (in my opinion) - not enough people talking about the impact that Art can have on our lives, our society and our well being.
Will be back tomorrow with my preference, but at a quick glance most look very similar. Mobile phone cameras are very good quality nowadays, and I'm glad to see you're using Pixel 7 (I have the 8), if its good enough for you, then it must be good!
It is a really great camera. It would be be so much lighter, especially with just my back pack, to only have my cell phone. The Nikon has a smoothness to it that I really like. Is that worth it for the weight of the Nikon on vacation? Probably not.
I prefer all of them because they are so so cute🥰
Thanks Tammy
You are welcome
I have been told how sharp the camera of the Google pixel 7 pro is actually.
Thanks for this post. Excellent reminder for all of us who are tempted to leave the camera at home, that a smartphone will generally produce worse results.
I actually thought that cell phone did quite well.
