Natal Rock Crab

in Amazing Nature4 months ago

Indo-Pacific Crustacean Grapsus Tenuicrustatus

Eye catching crab about 8cm wide, with descriptive English name natal sally-light-foot crab detailing exceptionally well how fast they move across the rocks, hang onto rock faces against fierce tides along this shoreline.

Mission Rocks situated on our North Eastern coastline, a pleasure spending time watching these crabs scuttling under/over the rocks sourcing food continuously.

Adult Natal Rock Crabs are carnivorous living in inter-tidal zone as seen in photographs with rock-pools surrounding one, solitary although many seen moving around.

IMG_3094.JPG

Females contain a 'purse' beneath to carry eggs, dropping off larvae numbering up to a hundred at a time in calm water where they hatch within three weeks after fertilization takes place. Free-swimming in shallow water the young feed on phytoplankton before moving back to the rocks, continuing their cycle of life.

From birth continuously growing, molting as size progresses, should they lose a limb due to heavy seas they are able to regenerate the limb, that is what I call progress!

IMG_3084.JPG

Markings while alive are stunning, apparently when they die thin-shelled rock crab leaves behind red-orange colour shell. Life cycle between seven to ten years, some cultures do eat them, I haven't tried to catch them other than to photograph, let alone eat them, they too pretty to watch!

Short video I took of one feeding, shoveling away before taking off once again the Natal Rock Crab is most definitely one to be amazing at it's habitat, speed, ability to live along rough shore.

Cool photos and video of my favorite seafood, looking at this makes me want to search for places where I can get crab in NZ.

Oh, I just had a quick check and all I saw was raw, I want cooked for goodness sake!

!PIZZA

Crab and Lobster in much bigger variety for the pot are available when the sea offers some, these smaller ones definitely there to enjoy watching.

I'm in hospital because I drunk a cup of petrol.
That was a very fuelish thing to do.

Amazing photograph of crabs you have here. They are all looking great

Natural beauty all of their own scurrying around.

Another great find. The pictures of this hearty crab are to be admired. Eating them may tickle some people's taste buds, but just observing them seems more enjoyable.

The video is very cool with the shoreline so different than most that I've seen.

Some amazing beaches up that way, this section of rocks are awesome to spend time simply looking into rock pools which are full of life.

Shelf of rocks you cannot see during high tide, always a game of making sure of timing visit.

How are you dear friend @joanstewart good morning
How interesting everything is about this crab, I love the idea that they have the ability to regenerate some of their limbs, this is revolutionary
Beautiful photographs, I loved the video of your feeding.
Have a beautiful morning

We have a long way to go in evolution to do some regenerating compared to wildlife 🙃.

Fascinating to watch them feeding, they tidy up like vultures on the land.

Wishing you a wonderful day and thanks for visiting.

Always lovely to watch in colourful display, brings back the child in one.

Oh my dog, how did you manage to photograph them! They move too fast, but this time they've must be really still. The photos are amazing! I love to watch them. Thanks for sharing! I also have not eaten crab before, I rather watch them, they're too unique.

Low tide they were very busy scoffing down morsels popping out everywhere between rocks, it was fun as always to watch.
