Are letterboxes insanely expensive for what they are in your country? The flimsiest smallest box here is around $40. I suppose it'd be okay if I actually liked flimsy post boxes destroying the look of the front of my house but I'm house proud and I wanted something I could live with.
The last postbox was painted and ugly brown and was a relic of the 1980s. It had plastic white lettering which was also half painted brown. It had to go.
So, instead of doing important things like finishing painting the house, we instead took to the shed to see what we could find. An old wooden drawer of bike parts, some form ply, and copper from the old hot water service made the box.
I'm pretty sure it's the only letter box made of an old drawer with a copper roof in the whole of Australia if not the world.
We had found a cypress post under the house which was left over from building the deck. The last post box had a brown painted metal pole. We think this looks a lot warmer and more natural, don't you think?
I did have to buy some brass letters though. They stand out against the dark wood.
We may have only saved a measly $40 but I'm so happy with it. I was also chuffed that five minutes after instal, a huge rain came down and swept all the dust and dirt off the copper.
What do you think? Feel free to share your own letterbox below.

True my country we have this little plastic letterbox so expensive and it's ugly too so I just make my own square shape type hehe.
Yours looks Good house shaped I should have thought about that for my own letterbox
So much better to make your own. I think the house shape is very children's picture book, like what a letter box should look like. People have all kinds of shapes but this is my favorite!
Yup it looks good just a little paint it will look much better
Very cool! Love the copper roof.
Jamie will polish it when he picks up the metal polish from the old place. I love it,!
I've always said it and I repeat it to my children: price does not mean quality and the greatest satisfaction is making something with your own hands and showing it off proudly. Your mailbox looks great 👍😊
No need for letterboxes here, there's no postal service :-D And the private shipping companies deliver to the doorstep and only if you sign a paper, so no need to leave anything anywhere (it would probably get stolen, anyway).
Nice work on the letter house, though. The roof makes it like an old shack in the forest, long abandoned and probably haunted. Nobody is going to steal letters out of there.
Are letters still a thing in Aus? Our post office is basically defunct
Oh yes. You can opt out of most things and get them snail mail but we still get mail.... And small packages in the box or larger on the deck or under the carport...m
You've been curated by @plantpoweronhive! Delegations welcome!
Until someone comes and steals your letterbox because it's made of copper! :D
Did you know that Australia Post has a whole bunch of rules and regulations and standards that a letterbox must meet for them to deliver mail to it? Crazy occupational health and safety stuff. Wonder how it will change as they retire those Honda motorbikes and move to other vehicles like the Electric tuktuks I see roaming around my neighbourhood :P
Now ay really? Well I get mail delivered so maybe my boxes always pass reg...I saw an Indian guy with aviators and a handlebar moustache and full postal high vis pants and jacket yesterday at the Bunnings point counter. When the woman rocked up she took one look at him and said 'sorry, I didn't see you there' and he did not look amused...
Always say hi to the person wearing camo tho...
