This town, or rather this "site", its founders decided to call it "Montalbán" because of the dense fog that covered the surrounding mountains and which frequently descended to the valley where the first houses and the first church had been built back in 1630. It seems that this quite usual atmospheric phenomenon also brought back memories of a place of the same name in Spain. It also turns out that the etymological meaning of "Montalbán" is "Montes blancos" (You can consult sources of this in: Montalbán-Carabobo-Wikipedia and Montalbán-Córdoba-Wikipedia).
A este pueblo, o mejor dicho a este "sitio", sus fundadores decidieron llamarlo "Montalbán" debido a la densa niebla que cubría las montañas a su alrededor y la cual descendía con frecuencia a ras del valle en donde se habían levantado las primeras casas y la primera iglesia allá por el año 1630. Al parecer este fenómeno atmóferico bastante usual, también les traía recuerdos de un lugar homónimo en España. Resulta también qué, el significado etimológico de "Montalbán" es "Montes blancos" (Pueden consultar fuentes de esto en: Montalbán-Carabobo-Wikipedia y Montalbán-Córdoba-Wikipedia).
But the intention of this publication is obviously not to saturate you with historical and bibliographical data related to this small town in Carabobo, Venezuela. No, actually I wanted to point out the "dense fogs" because one of the things I like to do the most is to go out for street photography when this phenomenon occurs during the mornings.
Pero la intención de esta publicación obviamente no es la de saturarles con datos históricos y bibliográficos relativos a este pequeño pueblo de Carabobo, Venezuela. No, en realidad quise señalar lo de las "densas nieblas" porque una de las cosas que más me gusta hacer es salir a fotografías callejeras cuando este fenómeno ocurre durante las mañanas.
As I recall, when I was a kid, the local weather was much colder and perhaps wetter. So these "morning fog episodes" were much more frequent and lasted until late in the day. However, in spite of the irreversible change of the climate generated by the asphalt and the loss of local vegetation, we still have many fabulous cloudy mornings in our town.
Según recuerdo, cuando yo era un niño, el clima local era mucho más frío y quizás más húmedo. Así que estos "episodios de niebla matutina" eran mucho más frecuentes y se extendían hasta avanzado el día. Sin embargo, a pesar del irreversible cambio del clima generado por el asfalto y la perdida de vegetación local, aún seguimos teniendo muchas fabulosas mañanas nubladas en nuestro pueblo.
In fact, all these pictures were taken during last August. That is perhaps our month with the highest rainfall and therefore with the highest probability of having dense fog, since days with precipitation are interspersed with intensely hot and sunny days.... Fog is almost always present!.... It seems to me that we have had about 10 or 12 days with fog this past August.
De hecho, todas estas fotografías fueron tomadas durante el mes de Agosto pasado. Ese es quizás nuestro mes con mayores lluvias y por ende con mayor probabilidad de tener niebla densa, ya que al intercalarse días con precipitaciones con otros intensamente calurosos y soleados... ¡La neblina se hace presente casi siempre!... Me parece que hemos tenido unos 10 o 12 días con niebla este Agosto pasado.
Taking pictures in the foggy streets gives me an interesting point of view both as a person and as a photographer... From my particular position I can appreciate how most people seem to be there "waiting for the sun to appear" to definitely start their day to day activities. This then often provides bucolic and very expressive scenes, which are a pleasure to record.
Ir haciendo fotografías por las calles repletas de niebla, me brinda un punto de vista interesante tanto como persona o como fotógrafo... Desde mi particular posición puedo apreciar como la mayoría de personas parecen estar allí "esperando a que aparezca el sol" para comenzar definitivamente las actividades de su día a día. Esto entonces provee con frecuencia escenas bucólicas y muy expresivas, las cuales es un placer registrar.
From a photographic point of view, this atmosphere is somewhat challenging. Temperatures seem to vary from street to street, as do light conditions. So it is best to go with a lens whose light absorbing capacity is quite high and with an intermediate focal length, which allows us to capture the scenes framing from a distance, in order to "put more fog between us and what we want to photograph".
Desde el punto de vista fotográfico, esta atmósfera es algo desafiante. Pues las temperaturas parecen varias de calle a calle, al igual que las condiciones lumínicas. Así que lo mejor es ir provisto con un lente cuya capacidad para absorber luz sea bastante alta y con una distancia focal intermedia, la cual permita captar las escenas encuadrando desde la distancias, esto con el objetivo de "poner más niebla entre nosotros y lo que queremos fotografiar".
Be that as it may, this "cloudy mornings" is something very characteristic of Montalbán, especially in this region, as other neighboring towns (some as close as 7 kilometers away) have neither the number of days nor the density of fog the way it happens here. This has some geographical explanations, which besides being long, can also be boring to listen to. But it can be summarized as follows: "It is a high valley (660 m.a.s.l.) surrounded by a horseshoe of mountains which reach up to 1,800 m.a.s.l. that goes in a South-West-North direction, allowing masses of warm and humid air to arrive from the East coming from the flat lands of the center of the country"... Wow, it seems that I learned it all! (This was told to me by one of my old high school teachers). 😂😂😂
Sea como sea, esto de "las mañanas nubladas" es algo muy característico de Montalbán muy en especial en esta región, pues otros pueblos vecinos (algunos tan cerca como a 7 kilómetros apenas) no tienen ni el numero de días ni la densidad de la niebla de la manera como aquí sucede. Esto tiene algunas explicaciones geográficas, las cuales además de ser largas, también pueden resultar aburridas de escuchar. Pero se puede resumir así: "Es un valle alto (660 m.s.n.m) rodeado de una herradura de montañas las cuales alcanzan hasta 1.800 m.s.n.m que va en dirección Sur-Oeste-Norte, permitiendo que por el Este lleguen masas de aire cálido y húmedo provenientes de las tierras llanas del centro del país"... ¡Caray, parece que me lo aprendí del todo! (Esto me lo dijo uno de mis antiguos profesores de secundaria) 😂😂😂
ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.
NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografias capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.

Sin duda alguna la niebla es un perfecto filtro para la fotografía y tu aprovecha de ese filtro para sacar buenas fotografías.
Y con estos ciclos de calor-lluvia-calor la niebla es más frecuente que antes... ¡la estoy disfrutando! je je je :))

Disfruté muchísimo con tu post ya que tengo una gran conexión con este pueblo, fue donde crecí los primeros ocho años de mi vida, y es donde aún vive mi abuela y parte de mi familia paterna, lamentablemente está muy olvidado hoy en día, pero aún y con sus calles oscuras por las noches y las casas resquebrajadas, no pierde su magia y encanto, gracias por inmortalizarlo, no sabía que su nombre tuviera origen en eso de las densas nieblas, adoré tu post, es digno de compartir y guardar. Sí, Montalbán parece ir cayendo lentamente, aquejado por sus males casi siempre anidados en la lascivia y la negligencia de propios y extraños... Pero, como todo en este mundo, sigue teniendo ese encanto particular de las cosas otrora prístinas cuando se deslucen por cuestiones de destino... No soy afecto a los optimismos, basta con atravesar estas calles y escuchar su susurro novel y desarraigado, para entender que el pueblo que fué ya no volverá a ser... Mientras, y hasta que el cuerpo aguante, yo sigo robando fotos de sus espacios remanentes, cuando menos... Saludos y bendiciones para ti y los tuyos...
