Un par de meses atrás vi una película llamada *Días perfectos; en ella se puede observar la rutina diaria de un hombre de mediana edad que se encarga de limpiar baños públicos. Es un filme con un ritmo tranquilo y con una banda sonora perfecta que en su mayoría podemos disfrutar mientras Hirayama, así se llama el protagonista, viaja en su van hasta los diferentes baños públicos.
Él ama esa rutina, y eso se hace notar aún más cuando algunos sucesos lo sacan de ella. Una de las actividades favoritas de Hirayama es la de tomar fotos con su cámara analógica; este detalle es otra muestra de lo mucho que él ama la simplicidad. Y es que los que unimos usar la vieja tecnología sabemos que el disfrute estaba en el proceso y no en el resultado. ¿Cuántas veces luego de ir a revelar las fotos supimos que no habían quedado bien, incluso que se habían velado? Si bien eso podía causar malestar, no había dejado de disfrutar el momento en el que tomamos esa foto; la inmediatez no estaba presente como sucede con la tecnología actual.
A couple of months ago, I saw a movie called Perfect Days; it follows the daily routine of a middle-aged man who cleans public restrooms. It’s a film with a leisurely pace and a perfect soundtrack, most of which we get to enjoy while Hirayama—that’s the protagonist’s name—drives his van to the various public restrooms.
He loves that routine, and that becomes even more apparent when certain events disrupt it. One of Hirayama’s favorite activities is taking photos with his film camera; this detail is yet another sign of how much he loves simplicity. After all, those of us who enjoy using old technology know that the pleasure lay in the process, not the result. How many times, after getting our photos developed, did we find out they hadn’t turned out well—or had even come out foggy? While that might have been disappointing, it didn’t stop us from enjoying the moment we took that photo; there was no immediacy, as there is with today’s technology.
En sus descansos, Hirayama toma fotos a las ramas de los árboles por las cuales se cuela la luz, fotos en blanco y negro. Cuando vi esta escena recordé lo mucho que me gusta tomar fotos de las ramas de los árboles; me cautiva cómo la luz traspasa y parece jugar entre las ramas, parece saltar y moverse, parece entrar y salir.
Resulta que en Japón se le llama *komorebi a ese mágico instante donde la luz se cuela por las ramas de los árboles; la contemplación de estos destellos a mí me llena el alma. El komorebi viene a recordarnos la belleza de lo efímero y de lo imperfecto; también ha de recordarnos que la luz siempre habrá de encontrar su camino para brillar.
During his breaks, Hirayama takes black-and-white photos of the tree branches through which light filters. When I saw this scene, I remembered how much I love taking photos of tree branches; I’m captivated by how the light passes through and seems to play among the branches—it seems to leap and move, to come and go.
It turns out that in Japan, komorebi is the name given to that magical moment when light filters through the branches of trees; contemplating these glimmers fills my soul. Komorebi serves as a reminder of the beauty of the fleeting and the imperfect; it also reminds us that light will always find a way to shine.
