Barreras del Lenguaje
―¿Qué eres? ―preguntó Benjamín, sin saludos o protocolos previos, a través del micrófono de la consola de comunicaciones.
En pocas fracciones de segundos, el algoritmo creado por el operador, convirtió, el escueto pero conciso mensaje, en el antiguo idioma hablado en la Tierra, una forma mutada, por más de ochocientos años de crisis y anarquía, del español predominante en lo que una vez fue conocido como América de Sur.
El mensaje traducido, fue codificado según la antigua forma usada en comunicaciones de más de veinte mil años en el pasado y emitido en una señal laser que fue dirigida al artefacto. Algunos segundos pasaron hasta que una nueva señal fue recibida.
―Un nuevo mensaje fue recibido señor ―dijo el operador, dirigiéndose al capitán, e ignorando a Benjamín.
―Pues muéstrele al doctor cual fue la respuesta ―respondió el capitán.
Nuevamente una extraña amalgama de diferentes secuencias de audio, unidas para formar un mensaje coherente, fue recibido: ―Soy una máquina, construida para modificar la estructura de la materia, es todo lo que puedo explicar, usando mi limitado vocabulario en su idioma ―respondió el mecanismo.
―¿Por qué nos habla en idioma terrestre? ―preguntó el operador, consternado ―. Entiendo que no tenga la habilidad de generar emisiones que puedan interpretarse como sonidos, pues no fue creado para eso, pero, ¿por qué un idioma que no usamos desde hace más de veinte mil años?
―Por la misma razón por la que se comunica a través de fragmentos de audio antiguo ―explicó Benjamín ―. Desde los comienzos de nuestra era antigua, cuando se iniciaron los viajes espaciales en Perseo, abandonamos las comunicaciones radiales por su ineficiencia, tanto energética como de velocidad, desde entonces hemos estado usando o bien láseres, para cortas distancias o paquetes de datos y enlaces cuánticos, cuando de distancias grandes se trata.
―Comprendo, y en todos los casos, no hay señales residuales que hayan sido recogidas por el dispositivo ―dijo el operador.
―Exacto, por lo tanto, las últimas señales que conoció de nosotros son de cuando aún estábamos en el sistema solar ―concluyó Benjamín.
El científico se recostó por un momento de la consola, como si estuviera pensado en que decir a continuación, luego sacó del bolsillo de su mameluco, un anotador y lo ojeo, ante el continuo escrutinio del capitán y el operador, que parecían aguardar que diría a continuación.
―No hay nadie que pueda ayudarnos aquí ―dijo pensativo, para luego voltear a donde se encontraba el capitán ―. ¿Será posible contactar a la academia de Palas?, necesitamos la ayuda de alguien de allá.
―Creo que no hay problema con eso, tenemos enlaces cuánticos con Palas, Dione y Heracles ―respondió el operador, sin aguardar la respuesta del capitán, quien le lanzó una penetrante mirada, que hizo callar al joven.
―Como dijo el alférez, si es posible hacerlo, ¿de qué ayuda se trata? ―dijo el capitán.
―Si vamos a hablar con el mecanismo, necesitamos hacerlo de la forma más eficiente posible, necesitamos que aprenda y hable nuestro idioma, supongo que, si aprendió un viejo y olvidado lenguaje por si solo, no le será difícil aprender el nuestro con ayuda ―respondió Benjamín ―. Pero necesitaremos un lingüista, y no tenemos a ninguno en nuestro equipo. Por eso necesitamos a alguien de Palas.
―Y, ¿por qué de Palas? ―dijo el capitán.
―Por que vengo de ahí, y el rector nos ayudará sin tener que dar muchas explicaciones ―explicó Benjamín.
―Bien, no hay más de que hablar entonces ―dijo el capitán―. Alférez encárguese de colaborar con el doctor en todo lo que necesite. Usted se encuentra a cargo de esto doctor.

-What are you ? -Benjamin asked, without greetings or prior protocol, through the microphone of the communications console.
In a few fractions of seconds, the algorithm created by the operator converted the brief but concise message, in the ancient language spoken on Earth, into a form mutated, by more than eight hundred years of crisis and anarchy, from the predominant Spanish in what was once known as South America.
The translated message was coded according to the ancient form used in communications over twenty thousand years in the past and emitted in a laser signal that was directed to the device. A few seconds passed until a new signal was received.
-A new message was received, sir, - said the operator, addressing the captain, and ignoring Benjamin.
-Well, show the doctor what the answer was, - replied the captain.
Again a strange amalgamation of different audio sequences joined to form a coherent message was received: 'I am a machine, built to modify the structure of matter, that is all I can explain, using my limited vocabulary in your language,' replied the mechanism.
-Why do you speak to us in the Earth language, -asked the operator, dismayed -. I understand that it does not have the ability to generate emissions that can be interpreted as sounds, for it was not created for that purpose, but why a language that we have not used for more than twenty thousand years?
-For the same reason that it communicates through fragments of ancient audio, - explained Benjamin-. Since the beginning of our ancient era, when space travel began in Perseus, we abandoned radio communications because of their inefficiency, both energy and speed, and since then we have been using either lasers, for short distances, or data packets and quantum links, when it comes to long distances.
-I understand, and in all cases, there are no residual signals that have been picked up by the device, -said the operator.
-Exactly, so the last signals it knew about us were from when we were still in the solar system, - concluded Benjamin.
The scientist leaned back for a moment from the console, as if thinking of what to say next, then he took out a notebook from his jumpsuit pocket and glanced at it, under the continuous scrutiny of the captain and the operator, who seemed to be waiting for him to say next.
-There is no one who can help us here, - he said thoughtfully, then turned to the captain -. Is it possible to contact the Palas Academy? We need the help of someone there.
-I think we have no problem with that, we have quantum links with Palas, Dione, and Heracles-" said the operator, not waiting for the captain's reply, who cast a piercing glance at him, silencing the young man.
-As the Ensign said, if it can be done, what help is it? -said the captain.
-If we are going to talk to the mechanism we need to do it as efficiently as possible, we need it to learn and speak our language, I suppose if it learned an old and forgotten language on its own it will not be difficult for it to learn ours with help -answered Benjamin -. But we will need a linguist, and we don't have one on our team. That's why we need someone from Palas.
-And why Palas? -said the captain.
-Because I come from there, and the Rector will help us without much explanation, -said Benjamin.
-Well, there's nothing more to say then, -said the captain-. Ensign, take care to help the doctor with anything he needs. You are in charge here, doctor.
