Hello, Hivers and Stackers!

1888 year dated coins are of special interest to me because it bears my favorite and lucky triple 8 number. In the Article Series "My 1888 Coins", I will be featuring the 1888 year dated coins that I have collected to date.

Check out my other 1888 silver coins in this article series:

  • 1888 Mexico Second Republic 25 Centavos
  • 1888 Great Britain Queen Victoria 6 Pence
  • 1888 US Morgan Dollar

  • ♥.•:¨¨:•.♥.•::•.♥.•:¨¨*:•.♥

1888 was a time when small change represented considerable purchasing power: Americans averaged a ten-hour working day, and the expression "a dollar a day" was quite apropos. In New York City, for instance, a salesman just starting out could expect to make about ten cents an hour. That dime might buy a ladies Shetland wool corset, a child's ticket to see General Tom Thumb on Broadway or maybe a half-dozen good cigars. Information Source

Legend Obverse dimes from the later years1882 through 1891are more available than other Seated Liberty coins of this era. As representatives of the design type in general, they span a period of American history that begins prior to the beginning of the Civil War and ends one year after the Western frontier officially closed. By the end of the 1880s, most people had known no other coins except the Seated Liberty issues. Many called for a new design. In 1892, the long-lasting Seated Liberty motif was finally replaced with the new portrait of Liberty by Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber.

OBVERSE: Liberty is seated on a rock facing left while her right hand rests firmly above the shield of the United States. In her left hand is a pole with a Phrygian cap resting atop the pole. She is surrounded by thirteen stars.

Legend Obverse dimes are one of the most popular 19th century U.S. coins. Legend Obverse Seated Liberty dimes were produced from 1860 through 1891 at four mints: Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC) and San Francisco (S).

The series is punctuated by the With Arrows issues of 1873-74, a two year design change that used arrows on either side of the date to indicate a slight increase in weight.

REVERSE: Features a wreath surrounding the denomination.

And this is how the almost uncirculated 1888 Seated Liberty Dime looks like.

Just think about this almost uncirculated seated Liberty Dime ....132 years old!!! That's so impressive @silversaver888, that's what got me collecting Morgan Silver Dollars as a kid!!!
I always was impressed with the History, just think Someone was carrying dimes just like this one in there pocket 132 years ago!😀
So nice my friend, have a nice night!!😍😍😀

It is amazing that I have a coin that is that old, LOL! Do I know a name of a relative of mine that would be that old if they were alive today? Gosh, I need to research my family tree!
Have a wonderful day, my friend @silvertop, and take care 🥰🌺🤙
!tip

That would be very interesting @silversaver888!! It is so important to record your family tree history. I have many old photo's with no printing on the back, I have no idea who these people are......
Enjoy the day my friend!!😍😍😀

I think that it may be a challenge for me. I will have to really research. Growing up My "uncles" and "aunties" and "cousins" were all extended family friends of both my parents, and their children. Both my Mom and Dad are only children. Nor do I have a recollection of meeting any of my Mom's cousins or Dad's cousins or their children. I've seen many photos from the military... friends of Dad and Mom... and during the commissioning of Dad when he became full bird Col, there was just Mom and my brothers, I was in grade school then. I guess we are not blood connected to anyone except our grandparents with whom I have vague memories of my Dad's dad and my Mom's mom. I kept a letter from my Grandfather's stepbrother (from what I know, my grandfather was adopted by a Jewish family in Michigan when he was 14 years old when he was orpaned).
It would be interesting for sure...

Wow @silversaver888 you have some work cut out for you, if and when you want to trace your family tree! With both your Mom and Dad being only children ( like me) that does focus the search a bit.....I wonder how many families have the same issue's that we both have tracing out lineage!
I don't think I have the time to search my family tree at the moment..Life....Lol..😇
Enjoy your evening my friend!😍😍😀

K, I wrote to the address on the letter. Let us see where this leads to!

Let us know my friend That sounds wonderful, Take care @silversaver888!!😍😍😀

What I could buy in 1888 with the silver I have now!
Just posted my 1888 Mexico 25 Centavos earlier today with a mention of your post , my gunslinger Sister.
Always, with love even, as Nuns...🌺 💝 🌹 💓 🌸 🌼

I read and commented on it eight minutes from the time your article was published, sis! It is a beautiful 1888! Old coins are so pricey! But I am loving it. I keep adding to the list. Some are really beyond my means, even the super cull ones, LOL! But for my purpose, it is enough that the dates are readable.
Take care my lovely sis @kerrislravenhill 🥰🌺🤙. Lots of love💓💝 and a million and one Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!

The average wage in the United States is:

If paid in gold, that is about a 1/10 oz of gold for a day's work.

Googling for Canada...

"As of January 2019, the average wage for Canadian employees across the nation was $1,011.62 per week – which works out to just over $52,600 CAD per year..."

It's where I am but we know that there are Deductions like; Taxes, Pension, Employment benefits, Union dues, Housing, groceries, consumption taxes, etc, and what I will left will be a few Maplegrams.
Great reply Comment Sis!
💕

In reality, you and I have changed our mindset when we started stacking, sis. You and I save the value of our work by exchanging fiat into real money. And I still am amazed by how stacking has changed my financial standing. I have been debt-free from revolving credit as a result of my desire to start stacking, and now have some material and physical silver and gold coins that I hold, possess, and own. I couldn't save a cent before I started stacking!

Nice coins and great music, and hearing the music brought a question to my mind.

So I did a little sleuthing about on the old inter web.

Yep TWO GALLONS of Beer!

Screenshot_2020-08-05 Quarterly reports of the chief of the Bureau of statistics showing the imports and exports of the Uni[...].png

The price was 50 cents a gallon!

I am sure you were just as curious as I was to know that answer!

Another useless piece of information now forever etched in my brain.

WOW, $700M for liquor for 3 years in 1886 at a time when beer was 50 cents a gallon! Did women eat as much chocolates during that time too? or maybe chocolates were not invented yet?

I love the look of a little ware on old coins. Don't get me wrong I very much like the look of an uncirculated shiny coin but the older coins just say a little more to me.

Yeah, me too. I do try to stay away from old coins, as I find them pricey for the amount of silver they have. Even older generic rounds are trying to be pricier than new ones. I think that there s so much hype now with everything silver, LOL! The market is really funny, the pricier it is, the more people want it.
Have a wonderful evening, @maddogmike! And thank you for being first to come and comment on this article. I appreciate you. Take care 🥰🌺🤙.

Very cool sis! I like it! I'm going to have to go take a look at ours, but they are not uncirculated at all! Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day! Much love and hugs!💕🤗😘🌸

The 1888 collection is just for fun, supposedly.. but now I realize that the 1888 date in most of the coins I've been looking at is pricier than other dates. I don't know how far I will take this collection. And as you already know, old coins, in general, have higher premiums.
Have a beautiful day, sweetest sis, @elizabethbit. Take care 🥰🌺🤙, lots of love and hugs💕😘🤗
