If you've spent as much time as I have playing with them you'll know the value of a great pair and how important it is to avoid sub-standard versions - They simply don't perform as well and can leave one feeling rather dissatisfied and, to be honest, in a lot of pain.
I've spent much of my life in the outdoors doing various things from hunting, kayaking, camping, off-roading, hiking, trekking and other such outdoorsy things. It's always meant a great deal to me, the ability to escape to a wilderness or remote area, and along the way I've acquired many skills and a great deal of equipment that has assisted in my outdoor pursuits and made it safer, more enjoyable and sometimes more comfortable. Over the years I've come to rely on those skills and the equipment and one such item is a sturdy and comfortable pair of boots.
Great boots
I've lost count of how many boot's I've gone through in life; let's just call it a fuck-load. What I do remember though, is the bad ones.
Unfortunately, the boots I've worn haven't always lived up to my standards and those that have not have left me with blisters and worn patches on my feet, foot and leg pain through bad arch support, twisted angles, stability and lack of traction issues and general fuckiness that I simply do not tolerate. The problem is it's not always easy to tell how a boot will perform until one pulls it on, laces it up and gets into the field.
I've had all sorts of brands, mostly expensive, which means $250+ Australian Dollars with brands like Merrell, Columbia, Salomon, Hoka and Lowa featuring prominently. These, generally midweight, boots have all performed well and I rock a pair of Merrells and Salomons in the boots closet at all times. But I've needed more, a more heavyweight boot, also and for that I turn to 5.11 Tactical.
5.11 A.T.A.C Arid 8"
I have had the same pair of 5.11 A.T.A.C Arid boots since 2017 which, considering the frequency and usage I put them to, is a very long time. They are battle worn and scared but they still perform.
I've found the grip level is dropping off lately though, a product of worn soles, and had started to think about replacing them but after an inspection decided there's probably another six months in them. However, a few weeks ago I realised that won't be the case as I found a split in the sole of one of them; it was then I started to seriously think about some replacements.
There was never any doubt about what I'd replace them with and I went to the 5.11 Tactical website and ordered up my new pair, and some other stuff too. Above you can see my consignment arrived and after unboxing I took them along to a forest not to far away for a few photos to use in this post.
I'm not going to go right into the features and attributes of these boots, you can work that out for yourself I guess, if you're keen. One of the best features though is the zip on the instep though. That means one can set the required fitting with the laces and never have to adjust it; undoing the zip allows fast removal and fitment when required. Of course, all the features expected in a Tactical boot are there: Strength, reliability, traction and...oh fuckety fucking fuckballs, there is no knife pouch.
The version above is the 2.0 version and they have removed the knife pouch which used to accommodate my EDC knife, my every day carry knife.
You can see it pictured below in my old set of boots. I don't know why they deleted the pouch, but when I opened the box and realised I wasn't best pleased. It's not a major issue of course, I have pockets and a belt which is just as good for the EDC knife, I just like the boot pouch as when I wear jeans or other long pants it conceals the knife. I can live without it though.
Fun with boots
With new boots, it is essential to wear them in which is why it makes a lot of sense to buy them prior to the existing pair dying altogether. In my opinion there's no time frame to work around, one just knows when they're worn in. I've had boots that have taken a few days and others that have taken a month. It depends on the boot itself I guess, whether it's a heavyweight like these, or a softer medium or lightweight like the Merrells and others I mentioned above.
It's no fun pulling on a brand new pair of boots and doing a 12 kilometre hike in the rough stuff, trust me, I've done it. Once worn in though, the real fun begins and one can tackle the terrain with more vigour and confident the boots will perform, and one will be able to walk the next day. These boots will wear in nicely though, and I'll be able to spend days on end with them on and operating perfectly and leaving me in no pain.
I'll be honest and say that wearing in process isn't much fun though.
It basically means wearing the boots, hiking in them, for short periods then increasing the length of the hikes until they bend and flex as required. It can be a little painful and there's often a blister or two, especially if the hike-lengths are a little too long, although I have to say that these 5.11 Tactical boots tend to wear in really well as they've put a lot of effort into the design. I started this process today with a one hour hike and will do so each day for a couple weeks and I'll be good to go.
I'm looking forward to the adventures I'll have with these boots and, of course, will continue to wear the old pair until they die and then bury them with full honours, as they deserve.

Even though I've never really gone for a hike, hunt or anything of that sorts, for some reason I've always liked a big ole pair of chunky and sturdy boots. I don't know why that is, but that love for a nice pair of boots is still intact. Sadly, the two pairs I had weren't of the best quality and were a cheap bargain too, so they're now all torn up, lying somewhere in a bin. Yet, they did serve me well for quite a few years and I sure as hell didn't go easy on them.
I guess I really like a good pair of boots because of how long lasting and sturdy they are. No matter the product, if it's something that's well built and robust, then you can count me in, I appreciate a well made product.
For now I'm just on the hunt for a good pair of boots, not that I need it, but I'd love to have at least one solid pair of well made boots in my shoe box.

I wear boots pretty much all the time, even for work, although I wear R.M. Williams boots for work which are more formal looking. Black usually.
I hope you manage to find some great boots, do you have any ideas on what you want? I guess it's about a budget also though. I suppose it makes sense to buy the best you can afford as they're probably last longer.
I'm just looking for something that will last me about 5 years or so. I mostly wear my boots when I'm heading out of town, towards muddy or rocky areas, the boots really help when treading through such grounds.
For the colors it's either beige or light brownish, these two are the colors I prefer the most, and then we have some good ole black, mostly the ones with a "matte-ish" finish.
My budget really depends on what I'm getting, brand, type, quality etc
I usually hover around the $50 to $100 for boots, for any other types of shoes I barely cross the $40 mark, because most of those are casual or just formal, for day to day use.

I love the outdoors and have spend the vast majority of my life out there doing one thing or another for work or enjoyment and the equipment goes with the territory. Yup, heavyweights is what he needs,he actually has a pair of Merrells that he loves. There are a few items of clothing that he will never cheap out on, and footwear- including socks, of which his favorite is Darn Toughs- are at the top of the list :)

But their title as champion is contested, the other half of the long-termers out there swears by another brand…I can’t remember the name right now because I’ve had both and swear solely (aware of pun, but not intended…but don’t let that stop you from enjoying it if that’s your thing!) by the Matterhorns.

I'm always on the hunt for good boots and you raised a good point which I didn't mention; these boots in this post are designed for dry weather desert use generally. You know, troops in the sandbox. I have a pair of wet weather boots and their design and make-up is completely different.
I've heard of those Matterhorn boots and even tried a pair on a while back when I trekked the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. Good boots for sure.

Merrells are my go-to for medium weight boots as they're more pliable than the military/duty oriented 5.11's. There's a use case for each though.
I used a climb trees a lot you know, but fell out once, hurt every branch on the way down, mostly with my face, and now...well, the resulting damage hasn't left me with a pleasing visage. So, now. I don't climb trees much. 😂

I have a pair of the knockoffs of your best pictured pair. I wasn't sure I'd like them so I started cheap. It's how I roll.
I had blisters the first day. Big blisters. I had planned to put insoles in the boots after I had worn them in a bit but put them in for the second day. Raised my heel just enough to eliminate the blister problem and I have worn them every day for the last year plus.
I have a couple of pair of motorcycle specific boots, but I haven't had them on since I got these. I'm really happy with them and will buy a pair just like yours when the time is right.
This is what they used to look like. Notice the stains on the toe caps. Some dumbass slobbed tool cleaning solvent all over them one morning. I couldn't stand looking at them so I dyed the toe caps like this.
I might dye them right from the start next time...
Yep, I figured you'd have decent boots, and they look a little better with some wear right? My new ones look a little too new currently, but they'll wear in over time. Just on the insole thing. I wear orthotics so take the rubber insole pad thing out and insert my own orthotics which makes them better for my feet and way more comfortable.
Yep, exactly that. Me too. I don't have to wear insoles in athletic type shoes, and don't wear them in my 'dress' shoes until they are relieved to every day duty. Everything else has insoles in them.

I tend to remember the bad boots the most too - in particular a pair of beautiful and expensive Kamik hiking boots. They felt great, UNTIL the material on the bottom wore away in a certain spot, halfway through their first hike. It turned out that underneath was something hard and sharp. Maybe part of a nail, I don't know. They went back immediately...

Didnt know that Lowa also is known in Australia. They have one model wich is my longtime favorite walking shoe, unfortunately it was too expensive last time I had to buy new boots. So every time I take the ones I have now, although they are okay, I dream of the Lowa Renegade GTX mid ws. Haha I even can renember this crazy name of the show!
Australia is a highly developed country and there not many brands of anything that isn't represented. Things can be a little expensive here though, but then again, good boots often are.
Oh yes I know, my thought was rather, I didnt know that Lowa is so highly developped and operates worldwide :-)

I love boots too and wear them a lot even though not the same one as what you’re showing here. I agree that its quite tricky when it came to boots. I bought high heels for 10 dollar and it works wonderful but 10 dollar boots will only gave me pain and discomfort, it looks ugly too. As time goes by, i decided to stay away from boots and only keep 1 or two because it can save me a lot of money.

Other than the excellent performance of these boots, they look really amazing. It would have been way cooler if they had just kept the knife pouch.
I do not know much about boots, but I can relate to how important their performance can be. I went to a military secondary school and we had to wear boots often. The boots we were assigned were just never comfortable. We would always need to get something else ourselves to acheive the desired comfort, considering that we had to wear them all day.
A soldier is less effective if he or she has foot problems and so what is worn on the feet is critical. Taking that back out into the civilian world, a hiker with bad boots is going to have a torrid time and so some care needs to be taken to find the right boots, and socks for that matter. You understand I think as you've worn bad boots.

These are tactical boots, or duty boots I guess some would say. They are designed for troops in the field and are often generally issued in militaries around the world; these and others from different manufacturers. For me, the way I use boots, I need them to be robust and comfortable and these are. I'm sure they would suit your camping and outdoors needs.
I was only here for the boobs, but I appreciate a good pair of boots when I go hiking.

I mean spending days outdoors will definitely get your boots to step on wet placesThey do sometimes get wet but it's ok, I put up with it on the rare occasions it happens. These boots are designed more for dry climates actually, and I have a different pair for when it's wet. Still, having to cross a creek is going to mean any boots get wet, so...it's best to just deal with it and move on.

Well, it's an 1124 word post about boots that I went out of my way to take original photos for and write to the best of my ability. If that's a shit post then sure, I'm happy to wear the crown. I'm not sure I'll give the crown back though, might sell it for a battle belt to go with my boots.
