Sending it on Saturday [Plus some video of me shooting]

in Outdoors and more4 years ago

It's been a long time since I've been able to shoot at my range; The flu-situation closed it and despite the range reopening about six weeks ago, the social-distancing regulations made it difficult to run competitions in the usual way, and so we didn't.

Yesterday was the first competition day we've had since February, that's a long time when one considers that I'd shoot once or twice every week normally. I arrived feeling very out of practice and figured I'd take it easy, focus on the basics and not worry so much about speed.

Of course, that all sounds great in theory, but when I get into competition...Well, I have trouble not doing the best I can and seeking to push the limits.

Yesterday the stages were all big...Lot's of targets and lots of rounds. It was also a lot of fun and, of course, it was good to see some of the others who I really only see at the range, or club functions. We had a few laughs, and whinged about the flu-bullshit too.

There were loads of shooters there yesterday, as you'd expect at the first shooting opportunity for months, and that always means the competition will be tight. I went in with my take it easy approach but found myself pushing harder and harder as the day went on.

When I shoot, I shoot for my personal best; I mean I don't really shoot to win anything, just exceed my last performance, to improve my skills and beat my personal best. My competitor is myself, not the other shooters. Don't get me wrong, I like to win, it's just that I'd rather set my personal goals based on my own needs rather than the more general goal of winning. The winning comes naturally when all that other stuff goes to plan.

It was all about fun yesterday, at least for me, and I certainly had a lot of fun. I'm not sure where I finished in the results, I haven't seen them yet, however I shot pretty well I think. I could have been a little more accurate but it's all good, my speed will make up for that as far as overall scores go.

What was cool was my strategy yesterday...There's always multiple ways of running a stage, some faster and more efficient than others, and I got them all right yesterday. It will help in my results. I figure I'll be in the top third of the field somewhere however I'm more pumped about how it felt, that I performed well, than the results.

Below is not from yesterday, it's me at another event running a little stage. It will give you a small clue about what it's all about though, however this stage was very basic indeed. Most are much more complicated.

Anyway, I hope y'all had a great weekend and managed to find something interesting or exciting to do. I had a great weekend and even though today was an odd-jobs day it was productive and enjoyable. I got to have some fun at the range and tick a few little things off the chores list.

All the best for the week ahead team.

Heheh... Galen Wick Video Game (Ozzy Edition)

Galen Wick Ozzy Edition.jpg

That vid almost looked like a video game, glad you had some fun.

It feels like a video game sometimes...Video games, but for men. 😂

Something I am sorry I never learned to do properly, great shooting!

@tipu curate

Yep, I'm glad I have the skills and equipment. I shoot long guns too, long range rifles. So much fun and I love the science behind it too...Making my own ammunition etc.

Running then shooting comes with great practice, an art form of it's own.

I used to enjoy watching my sons do paint ball games out in the bush. My brother showed me how to use a gun, we never lived close enough to each other to carry on. Yes something I do feel everyone should know how to use, and respect fully.

I like what you said about the respect thing. Most people don't understand guns and how they work, they only hear all the bad things on the news. I believe, in the society we live in, that a little understanding will bring a little respect. Still, so many just don't get the chance, especially here in Australia, which is why I always try and represent my sport and hobby well, and take people shooting whenever I can.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Over here they asked for licensed gun owners to hand in the weapons, which many adhered to. Sadly now most of the guns are in the hands of criminals, obviously in use for all the wrong reasons.

Yes, that's exactly true...Same for cars...You know? Think of all the car related deaths there are...If there was no one behind the wheel there'd be no death...I refer to drink, drug and dangerous driving here, not general accidents. A human took the liberty to get drunk, high on drugs or drive like a manic...That's what results in the death...Same as guns...Someone pulls the trigger. It seems logic to me.

It seems like governments around the world are happy for criminals to have all the guns...Maybe because they fall under that category themselves mostly.

What's the "official" name of this sport? Looks like something I might want to get into.

It's called IPSC which stands for International Practical Shooting Confederation.

The sport is done in most countries so you should be able to find somewhere to do it.

Great! Thank you!

No worries, happy to help.

Hmmmmm. Now I understand a bit. When I think of range I think lanes and paper targets at a fixed distance. This would be called action shooting for me and I've never really done it formally. I'm not very good with a pistol anyway, so pistol competition has been limited. Lots of time on what I'd call a range, though.

I have done a little action shooting with a shotgun, but that more emulates hunting with the targets coming from and to anyplace.

Yep, I figured you didn't understand what IPSC was. We kick doors in, shoot different directions, run, climb, crawl etc. Stages simulate real world military scenarios.

Man, I'd love to get into IDPA and shoot my carry gun more. Wonder if they do long guns too, or if it's strictly pistol?

IPSC does shotgun and rifles too, we have three gun comps. It's good fun. That stage was at a three gun event, obviously just handgun though in this stage.

IPSC. Have to look into it. Thanks man! Competition shooting is one area I'm not familiar with.

IPSC is designed to simulate real-world scenarios Mil and LE, it is a lot of fun. They do it all over the world including the US (I think that's where you are.)

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Yea, I'm in the U.S. How much do they usually charge to get into the competition?

It depends...It's costly to get set up generally... Different matches cost differing fees. State titles are $100 entry, my club matches are free. One has to be an IPSC member though and that costs about $100. It used a lot of rounds too. The match on the weekend was over 150. A State titles could be 250. It all depends though.

That ain't too bad. I'm not looking for a title anyway. Only person I'm really interested in beating is myself. Bet it's tough with the ammo shortage right now. Lol.

We have a gun club around here, but I never really cared for it. Shooting from a box, goofy range officers driving you nuts even when you're being safe....🤪 To many EXTRA rules....

Might be willing to join for that though. Have to look into it. Thanks for all the info!

Why the hell do weekends have to end?

I will be leaving today, Sunday afternoon, to go pick up a pre-load. I received a please help text from a freight broker I work with often. One of my faves. It needs covered due to a broke down truck with a clutch failure. That was me 2 yrs ago. Hope He has 3K+ to spend. Mine cost over 7K.

I was going to enjoy a Sunday eve, pulled pork pig out. But no rest for the wicked.

Betta roll huh? Hopefully you got a pulled pork roll with gravy to take along with you!

Oh yea buddy.!

There will be a few "Rolls to Go."

Nice! I'll bet it was great to get back into a competition. I also got out to the range today, just sighting in the scope I mounted last weekend and also got the pellet rifle out to 100 yards while I was at it.

Range days all round then it seems. I had a good day, was good to feel normal there, albeit with a few distancing restrictions. You get the scope sighted?

Yup, here the first 6 while adjusting. (boresight pretty damn close eh?)

Then the second 6 (pulled the hell out of that one on right), but two in the same hole. Looking at the chrono string, two identical, not sure if that the same but sure looks it. May still try adjusting a few grains of power up or down, but not bad for first guess with that new 300 grain bullet.

And while I was at it... couldn't resist taking the .30 cal pellet rifle for a go with the new pellet weight as well. My first time shooting at 100 yards with it after adding the new external plenum.
Just quick shooting off the bipod with a guesstimate from Strelok data and 30 yard zero. One click down and a sandbag rest and It's a winner. 15 Shots at 100 yards. lol

Bore-sighting is my nemesis...I'm terrible at it. I get the job done of course, but I'm the worst bore-sighter in the history of fireams. Lol.

You, quite clearly, are good at it. Good groups there, I'd say she's pretty much GTG.
