A story of Two Xbox 360s and 8 players in Halo 3 Carnage [ENG/ESP]

HALO 3 LET THERE BE CARNAGE.png

RIGHTFIX - JSRF.png

After a few years since the last time we had pulled a stunt like this, two friends of mine joined forces to bring two Xbox consoles home as two TVs happened to be available now, and with a bunch of controllers available, the legendary "8 Player Halo 3" summoned by the game's System Link feature (connecting both consoles with an ethernet cable) was brought back to life. And it was glorious. Shoutouts to my brother as well for being awesome and letting us play in his room and TV for this to have happened.

If you have ever played Halo 3 with friends, then I think you can already guess why this would be so amazing; as it can already be pretty fun with 4 players in a single screen, having 8 with this setup (or theoretically, with even more Xboxes and TVs connected for more players) adds a lot to the experience of having all of your buddies going at it in the same game. Aside from the funny amount of confusion that can happen from having everybody with names that don't fit them (for an example, in any screenshots of that day that show "ArcadeStriker", that was not me playing lmao).

But as a refresher for people not familiar with Halo 3, as well as to retell the things that went down in these matches, I'll be talking about the modes we went through and what happened when we did.

image.png

Slayer: Right now its Killin' time

Deathmatch. Free For All. Kill anyone by any means. The classic mode in almost every FPS with multiplayer where all what it takes is to rack up deaths from the other players.

Banshees were used and stolen amusingly often, Ghosts rammed players, the Spartan Laser hit me in the face at least 3 times by the same player, and the ever present chaos of trying to hunt down that one guy annoying you while having to watch your back with one or several others chasing you like hunting season make for a really silly night when it is you and 7 other buddies duking it out with trash talk being a given

A staple of the Halo franchise that is always so fun to land is to sneak behind someone and give them a melee whack, which is a guaranteed kill, so keeping eyes on your neck will be essential to survive.

Vehicle kills being as goofy as ever, draining someone's energy shield until someone else gets the last hit and steals your kill, crashing through other players with a rocket launcher or sword while they fight each other, and yelling each other about how much they suck or how dirty they are pulling up to steal kills...it is the quintessential introduction to 8 friends rambling and trying to destroy each other in a game made for this kind of interactions.

image.png

Pictured: THREE out of four players with their screen in cyan from bumping face-first with someone else with the jump pads (you see that blue Elite falling off in one of the screens? That's me 🤠

And if you thought that trash talking the rest was bad enough in a free-for-all gamemode...

Capture the Flag: Please don't let them take the flag STOP NO

Classic CTF at the classic Vallhalla, get the other team flag and don't let them take yours. Unless your team somehow goofs up enough in offense (and I mean in the game, not just verbal) and defense which makes everyone stay dead at the same time while the rest have enough time to hit and run your flag, or even worse: Have a unsuspecting or "not good" player from the other team somehow sneak up to the flag and return it three times to win their game.

I still have no idea how in the world that happened twice other than how my team, myself included, didn't happen to pay attention to anyone sniffing at our base while we tried (and repeatedly failed) to storm the enemy base.

It turned so goofy at one point that the trash talk from one of the players got really frequent as so did my absolute confusion at how we were failing so much. But at least stealing Banshees, ramming people with it, and succesfully fending off some of their attacks in order to allow a teammate to capture the flag and have at least won once or twice made that worth it. Even if it was also full of moments like me getting to the base without any teammates to cover me and then failing to kill anyone in order to escape with their flag.

Team Odball: You better get your friend ballin'

Grab the oddball (a skull) and run until you win enough points; bonus for the boldest of players that try getting to their enemy's face included with an insta-kill melee attack while holding the oddball.

The one where I actually got to win once because my teammate clutched the oddball so many times while and racked almost 100 points on his own (while I managed to get only 13 out of those points, and otherwise was playing escort mission with him), what a madlad.

What got picked because the name (Bola Loca is the spanish name for Oddball, which means "Crazy Ball". Yes, it was that dumb of a reason 🤠) but also because we had played it before in Halo 4 turned into a pretty funny cat and mouse chase between 4 pairs of players just to get that pesky BOLA LOCA in their hands in High Ground.

Juggernaut: Hunt down the Wick...albeit silly imbalanced at first

By default, the juggernaut has a small extra over shield and extra damage, but otherwise is susceptible to any normal player attacks.

Since everybody else is on a team and there's no friendly fire by default though, it can devolve into chasing where the juggernaut is, hoping your fire gets the kill (well earned it stolen)...and if you are the juggernaut, run away from the inevitable horde if players coming from you.

The way it had the winner be determined by how many they could happen to kill on the crossfire while happening to have the juggernaut, but since they didn't have a special weapon or big durability/damage buffs, it wasn't like trying to hunt down a big boss, but simply another player with a target on their head; exaggerating the whole "steal the kill" thing that could happen in Slayer.

So we tried a Juggernaut variant that was way more fun from the get go...

Ninjanaut: Become the invisible Predator or die trying

This one caused a lot of screaming over how hard it was to see an invisible player while playing four-player Splitscreen (you can't rely on the minimap to spot it either unless they are attacked or attack) and essentially playing Predator with the ninjanaut, able to move faster but with less resistance to damage making them fragile if spotted by players and their bullets .

When several people caught or killed the juggernaut, things turned into a mad dash to the warzone in order to try kill any player freshly turned juggernaut and run away when successfully set as the juggernaut, which can only happen if you somehow get away from their sight (and the active camouflage doing the rest of your job with enough distance).

Screen watching strategies aside, your only chances to catch a sneaky juggernaut was to immediately retaliate if they failed to assassinate you in one backstab (I died so many times like that), somehow spot where's the juggernaut (minimap blip or noticing the active camo) and spread fire until you hit them and can visibly lock on them, or wait until someone makes it appear and try to steal their kill before everybody else shows up.

I had managed to get at least twice or thrice close enough to win as the Ninjanaut, and all those times I got robbed by one of our players that had consistently won in several gamemodes (not always, but enough to be a joke between us) and otherwise was often ahead while playing Ninjanaut. I think I did win once in Narrows though, where I actually played as sneaky as I could without getting too greedy (Trying to melee or shotgun someone in the face and failing to kill them before they and the rest noticed me) by staying hidden below the bridge when I had to run away.

That active camo works wonders when everybody is just running around to find where you are while playing on a fourth of the screen, doesn't it? 😎

Conclusion

The best part was that it happened and that it was as yelling-filled as it was, since we hadn't played something together that had us that completely off the rails in such a while...while the worst part was to realize the morning after that, while I counted on H3's Theater mode to save the games played to see them in different angles and such, saw the horrifying fact that I had to manually save the games in that moment, and we had turned both consoles already.

So while the majority of games that we played that didn't get recorded off-camera from an awkward angle with my phone are lost to time, the good thing though is that it made for a really good night, enough for the rest to look forward to repeating this someday.

No idea when that would be with how I have now started university again and I already got 3 assignments waiting for next week (let alone what is probably going to start rolling out past that)...but it will sure be an amazing time to do this again when the stars align once more.

Sort:

Man, this sounds like a perfect gamer evening. Brings back memories of me and a friend pulling all nighters grinding our online multiplayer in Halo 3. Such a good game for this kind of activity.

It sure was one night to remember; I think we spent until 4-5am awake playing that because of the length of the many games we played. At first I remember being a bit afraid it wouldn't work again because for some reason both consoles didn't want to see each other in System Link (both had RGH, the same game and updates) until I found online that I needed to disable something about "LiNK" (used for playing online with others through system link with hacked consoles) and it ended up working; big phew of relief...and loud screams from everything you could get in a session like this.

I never had the chance to play H3 in an Xbox 360 online back in the day, so its cool to hear that you could enjoy that before the servers closed. I do have MCC now but there's something about the way this happened (and playing with friends after all, since I think only one or two of them have PCs capable of handling MCC and the game), very likely the banter, that made this just priceless 😂

Thanks for reading and for your comment! 😄

I remember a few years ago in college, I invited a couple of my buddies over to my apartment. One of them brought his PS4. I brought out the tv from my room, placed it beside the one in my living room and we played Bloodborne the entire night!

There's nothing better than gaming with friends!

Didn't think that Bloodborne would have co-op (even though I had been aware from others that Dark Souls does have that co-op thing where other players can just break in your game, as well as Elden Ring and how that led to the whole "Let Me Solo Her" legend); must have been a really fun time to have a buddy tag along you in a game like that 😎

Thank you for reading and for your comment! 😄

It was a pretty neat time! I had an OP dude enter the game trying to kill me, and I sucked at PVP. I ended up baiting him into attacking me while I was near a cliff, dodged the attack, hit him once and watched as he fell to his death xD
