The only values that are really incompressible are Time, Space and the energy you put into them. Everything else can be free. You may find this provocative, but in the end you'll realize what I mean. By free, I mean of course the financial aspect that you decide to involve in the project.
We may have more or less lost sight of it, but at the outset Nature is totally free. It's only when we decide, as Humans, that we need - and also want - particular things that it starts to cost us more or less.
For example, if I want a ride-on lawnmower, as I'm likely to need in the countryside, then obviously this machine costs the same as a small car, so I'd have to pay a pretty penny !
But we're not there yet, and for the moment we're only at the beginning... What's more, I'm writing to you from Brittany and I won't be returning to our house for another week or so.
What I'm trying to say is that a garden is basically organised nature. A friend can lend you a piece of forest and in a clearing you can decide to plant cuttings or graft trees. Seeds can be collected and exchanged, basic tools can be found at jumble sales for next to nothing and, a few years later, you've got a garden you've made for 'next to nothing'. Almost, that is, apart from the time and energy you put into it.
In this article I'm going to tell you about some of the plants I picked up during my stay and which will soon be landing with me in the countryside.
We'll start with these four vigorous palm trees. They come from a couple of friends. At their house, there are a good dozen of them, over a hundred years old, and every year they swarm the ground with their offspring. The friend who looks after the garden puts them in pots and when we took a tour of his garden, he kindly offered me some.
I can't remember the species in particular, but with a plant recognition application, we should probably be able to find it. The funny thing is that a few years ago I wasn't a big fan of palm trees, and I guess I've changed !
It's no secret that I hate plastic, but in some cases it can be a great ally. A few cuts and you've got the perfect lightweight, hard-wearing container for transporting your cuttings !
I prepare some soil from the garden. A bit of brown soil turned over by the moles, a bit of fine gravel, a bit of sand and another lighter, draining soil and there you have it !
I put a bit of coarse sand at the bottom to absorb the excess water and note that I haven't pierced the bottom of my bottles yet. I'm waiting until I get home to do that, so that I don't put a lot of water in during transport !
And here's the result ! A small load of freshly cut plants ready to head off to new horizons !
There are three verbenas, a rosemary, a hydrangea and the last one is a fat plant that I picked up from the same friend, the palm tree guy.
I can't wait to see it all grow and I encourage you to surround yourself with plants collected from there. It's one of my great passions and it can take as little time as years, depending on your availability !

En effet, si je veux une tondeuse auto-portée comme j'en aurais probablement besoin à la campagne, alors évidemment comme cette machine coûte le prix d'une petite voiture, alors je devrais débourser une jolie somme !
Mais nous n'en sommes pas là et pour le moment nous n'en sommes qu'au début... Et en plus je vous écris depuis la Bretagne et je ne retournerai dans notre maison que dans une semaine environ.
Ce que je veux dire c'est qu'à la base, un jardin, c'est de la Nature organisé. Un ami peut vous prêter un bout de forêt et dans un clairière, vous pouvez décider de planter des boutures ou de greffer des arbres. Les graines peuvent être récupérées et échanger, les outils de base se trouvent dans des brocantes pour presque rien et voilà, quelques années plus tard, vous avez un jardin réalisé pour 'presque' rien. Presque, hormis le temps et l'énergie que vous y aurez consacré.
Dans cet article je vais vous faire le récit de ces quelques plantes que j'ai récupéré durant ce séjour et qui atterriront bientôt avec moi à la campagne.
Nous commencerons avec ces quatre vigoureux palmiers. Ceux-ci viennent de chez un couple d'amis. Chez eux, ils y en a une bonne dizaine qui ont plus d'une centaine d'années et qui, tous les ans, essaiment leurs rejetons au sol. L'ami qui s'occupe du jardin les mets dans des pots et lorsque nous avons fait un tour de son jardin, il m'en a gentilement offert.
Je ne me rappelle plus de l'espèce en particulier, mais avec une application de reconnaissance de plantes, on devrait probablement pouvoir la retrouver. Le plus drôle dans l'histoire c'est qu'il y a quelques années, je n'étais pas un très grand fan de palmiers et il faut croire que j'ai bien changé !
Ce n'est pas un secret que je déteste le plastique mais dans certains cas, cette matière peut s'avérer une grande alliée. Quelques découpes et voilà, vous avez un contenant parfait, léger et résistant, pour transporter vos boutures !
Je prépare une terre récupérée dans le jardin. Un peu de terre brune retournée par les taupes, un peu de graviers fins, un peu de sable et une autre terre plus claire et drainante et le tour est joué !
Je mets un peu de sable grossier au fond pour absorber le surplus d'eau et à noter que je n'ai pas encore percé le fond de mes bouteilles. J'attends d'être rentré pour faire cela et ne pas mettre plein d'eau durant le transport !
Et voilà le résultat ! Une petite cargaison de plantes fraîchement bouturées et prêtent à partir vers de nouveaux horizons !
On trouve là trois verveines, un romarin, un hortensia et la dernière c'est une plante grasse que j'ai récupérée chez le même ami, celui des palmiers.
J'ai hâte de voir tout cela grandir et je vous encourage à vous entourer de plantes récupérées de ce de là. C'est une de mes grandes passions et cela peut prendre peu de temps comme des années suivant vos disponibilités !

It's taking years to get my garden together, I always do a bit as I feel inspired so there are plants that lived in pots for years but slowly it's gone from a literal wasteland to something aesthetically appealing.

I have the same passion for gardening as you do and like to bring back plants from every trip to try and plant in my very small backyard.

For free though?! I spend so much money on my garden that I'm sure it is not cost effective. But the food is fantastic, grown with love and so much more nutritious. I love heading out to the garden to grab a handful of blueberries for my morning yogurt. I'm hoping that eventually the costs will subside; this has been my second year in this garden, and I've spent a lot of money getting it going.
I know, it was kind of provocative, but yeah, depending of ours projects and desires, it may cost more or less !

If there's one thing I see often in the gardening community on Hive, it's the recyling of plastic bottles as growing vessels, from Venuzuela to Bali. Here, we have so many pots people can't give them away and you find them at the recyling of the huge DIY chain we have here.
The less money we have, the more I go back to things like this, making me wonder why I decided to do away with it in the first place. Probably convenience, as the more you work, the less you have to spend time coming up with creative solutions.
Saying that, been working in the garden and recycling a lot and picking stuff up for free because we're broke and you can't replace an old oven in the house with rocks and plastic bottles, but you can distract yourself from the things that need expensive fixing by fixing things in the garden with hacks haha. Like the table I made last week from the base of an old worm farm and some hardwood boards from an old ute tray.

Basically, I'm pretty anti-plastic, but here it's just for transport! For me, nothing can replace a good clay pot, or even better: ... in an old hollow stump !

What a good option the plastic knobs to transport the plants. Is it just for transporting them or can they stay planted long term in them as well? I would like to have some aromatic plants, but the pots are a bit expensive at the moment heh.
