First Plantations at the Country House and other Uprooting sessions - October Garden Journal

in HiveGarden7 months ago

Hello dear Hivers! How are you doing ? Two articles in less than a week, incredible but true, isn't it ? I hope that won't be too much for you after my absence over the last few months !

Today, as you'll have gathered by now, we're talking about gardening. This time we've managed to clear our diaries to stay in the countryside for a few days at a time and I have to say that we've been able to make a lot more progress in the garden. I have to say that it's good to see things moving forward a bit more and modestly taking shape.

To give us a bit of courage and above all a bit of pleasure, we decided to plant a small area in front of the house. It's not really the right time of year, but with a bit of care, I think these plants, which generally grow in the south of France and the south in general, will do just fine ^^

IMG_1335.JPG

This is the area that was covered in reeds and weeds and that we wanted to invest in... To weed and uproot everything, we used this fantastic tool:

IMG_1377.JPG

In France, this is called a "grelinette" or spading fork. It has 5 tines, so you can work on strips of around 45/50 centimetres.

IMG_1333.JPG

IMG_1369.JPG

These are the other tools that have been used. More of the classics that I think you'll recognize without me having to name them.

In the wheelbarrow is some soil that we've collected from the piles made by the moles and I have to say that this one looks really nice, powdery and dark as can be !

IMG_1341.JPG

After a good hour of preparation and uprooting, our four plants are firmly in the ground ! Note that I also made the perimeter of this first little plot out of wood.

Untitled-1.jpg

So here we have two species of lavender and one rosemary. As mentioned above, these are plants that grow further south, but I think that as they're positioned due south and a little sheltered by the house, they'll do just fine !

IMG_1355.JPG

IMG_1366.JPG

With what was there before, I put down a little mulch so that the soil is not bare and to prevent too many other plants from taking root.

Of course, I finish off with a little watering to ensure that the roots are in good contact with the soil.

IMG_1427.JPG

Finally, the next day, I put back some mulch and on top of that, I put up some branches so that the wind doesn't blow it all away! So much for that first planting :)

But let's move on to the next phase...!

IMG_1375.JPG

At the back of this shed, there was a huge clump of brambles that we had started to cut back. A bit too gently, I think. In the end, we cut everything back as it grew back at a speed and pace we couldn't keep up with !

IMG_1376.JPG

After cutting everything back, we set about uprooting all the brambles and I have to say that if we did it really thoroughly, it took us a whole day for about twenty square meters.

IMG_1373.JPG

IMG_1400.JPG

We battled it out, sometimes using a hatchet, but in the end we ended up with nothing but clean soil. For those who think we won't have any more blackberries next year, don't worry, there are still plenty of brambles in the garden ^^ !

I haven't yet tried @dswigle's technique of putting water with salt, but I'll probably end up trying that! I've also heard of using bleach on the cut ends, but at the moment I'm not particularly keen on this potentially polluting technique...

IMG_1408.JPG

A little interlude with the forest above the house and garden !

IMG_1401.JPG

This is just a tiny fraction of the roots we managed to extract. Without lying or exaggerating, I think there were easily more than 10 times that amount on the whole of this small sloping plot.

IMG_1405.JPG

IMG_1407.JPG

That's it, the whole plot is free and all that's left is the land. But we're not going to leave it like that, because that would be the best way to start all over again !

IMG_1381.JPG

IMG_1414.JPG

No, we finally sowed some red clover - Trifolium incarnatum - which not only produces beautiful inflorescences, but is also an excellent nitrogen fixer and will help cover the soil for future planting, as well as feeding it in the meantime :)

So there you have it, you know almost everything about our most recent operations, and I hope you've enjoyed and found this overview interesting !

I'd like to thank you for your visit and wish you a very good week, see you soon,

Bonjour chers Hivers !

<3
