Robin collage text crop March 2025.jpg

On Tuesday morning I was up at 6:30AM much to someone’s disgust. Once I got him fed I got my post up and got started with my day. As I sat writing the post a flock of robins landed outside the window. I managed to get these 2 photos, the rest weren’t worth saving. We had seen the first robin on the farm on Friday morning. But they’ve been in the area for a while.

My brother helped get a load in the dishwasher before he left and then I got the laundry started. The seedlings needed watering again so I got that done.

And promptly started to run out of energy. The exercise class on Monday had caught up with me. I had to go to the gardens around noon as my #2 intern was coming, so I took it easy the rest of the morning.

Around 11AM I got the corned beef started for corned beef and cabbage. And I kept the laundry going.

When we headed to the gardens at noon, the sky was a deep, deep blue.

We got all our equipment and she got started on the azalea area.

I went to work cleaning out the irises that I hadn’t finished on Saturday.

I was glad she could come do this hard area. It never got done in 2024 and she got all the grass, dead stuff and leaves out.

I moved around to the other side of her, as this tiny garden was still in the sun. I got it cleaned out and found daffodils up.

Once we had our gardens cleaned out, she spread HollyTone under the azalea, then FlowerTone for the dead nettle and hybrid spiderwort that duke it out under there, and a little BulbTone for the volunteer bulbs under there.

I only spread BulbTone on my Back Porch garden as the plants are still dormant.

The crocus in the New West garden opened in the sun. I couldn’t decide if I like the sun photo or the shade photo with the honeybee, so here they both are.

One job I’d wanted my helper friend to do on Tuesday was take down the feeders before the bears got them. With him still out sick, my #2 intern was willing to climb up and do that and then she sat on top of the swing!

So the feeders are down and in the clean room awaiting washing up before they are put away.

We finished cleaning up the equipment around 2PM and I was exhausted. I watched Hidden Figures and then got the vegetables ready for the corned beef and cabbage.

I used batata in place of potatoes, carrots, my onions, cabbage, and a corned chuck roast. It came out beautifully. I love the whole meal doused in apple cider vinegar.

I am on the last season of Gilmore Girls now and watched that until bedtime. It was so warm that we only lit the office stove. The masonry heater still had lots of residual heat.

On Wednesday I think I will skip exercise class as it’s to be in the 60’sF and I will be out in the gardens as soon as it’s warm enough. I will start with the South Herb garden and if I have the energy, follow the sun around to the West Herb garden. These aren’t too bad, just lots of tall stuff to cut down and a few weeds. I can’t believe the Spring Equinox is Thursday at around 4:30AM!

The crocuses are gorgeous.

take down the feeders before the bears got them

Wow now there's a problem I don't have!

What is batata?

It's related to yams, looks like a giant sweet potato with white/cream flesh and red skin.

Do you have an idea of what season plants grow the most?
Winter, summer or spring?

Summer

I'm already salivating with that food on the table. It's gonna be super tasty.

Does Batata also taste like potato?
They look alike

It’s slightly sweeter but you can cook it any way you cook potatoes.

That Robins are very nice! That meal looks complete, it contains everything

You are really doing a very great job daily my friend
