My garden in December, Hive Gardeners? I have two, right up to Dec 19th, when I leave my old garden behind. Every few days, I go out and deadhead irises, pull weeds from the path, collect greens for the compost at the new house, feed the chooks, trim the grapevine that's growing like a triffid in this humid weather we're having.
Nostaglia? Pangs of regret? None. I've had enough of rabbits and foxes and blackbirds - for the first ten years it was fine, but lately they've been asserting their territory and there's not a damn thing I can do about it. I can build a rabbit proof fence, but foxes jump, and blackbirds fly.
So heading toward January, my garden will not look all a'tangle, like the photo below. I don't know what the new owner will do. I hope she's got a few skills, and some stamina and determination. It's not a garden you can leave or ignore or it's tapping at your windows threatening to strangle you.

In the new garden, I'm a dreamin'. You know I'll create a tangle there too, even though the whole block is only 663 metres squared. It's enough for a tangle of fruit trees, of an explosion of irises, of kale gone to seed. Already I've had two zucchini - Jamie said 'don't worry about it, we'll get around to it' in July but that wouldn't do me now would it? My little veggie patch is providing us lettuce and zuccs, and soon kale and cucumber, and my herb garden is bursting already.
The worst though is the concrete slab we've been trying to remove. $1500 AUD to remove - okay fine, if it'll save Jamie's back. Yet there was a slab under that too - and it's 300 mm thick, and concrete is expensive to remove - some $3500. Forgive me for not buying Hive. But without the removal of the slab, I can't have my big dream of the veggie patch.
Meanwhile, back at the old place, two chooks are broody, one died, and the other two stare at me blackly. Jamie's yet to find time to make a coop so I'm going to do something makeshift and get them down here so I can talk to them and reassure them the sky isn't falling.

The two fruit trees in the garden are apple, and the rest are unsalveagble root stock from dead trees. I have a nashi and a cherry to plant - once the slab is gone, we'll attempt espalier of sorts on the fence line. I have to protect them from cockatoos who come drink water from the bird baths at the front (as does the kangaroos). A gang of kookaburras laugh at me from over the fence. The birds are big down here. Big and loud and Australian.
I see a rabbit on dawn surf checks sometimes. I snarl and feel grateful for the urban fences. They don't stop possums, though. Fuckers.
The compost bins are doing their thing. I have a bokashi bin on the back step. All systems are go. I'm bringing a lot of experience to this tiny paradise.
More to come.
With Love,

I never gardened in Colorado but we're in Denmark now and absolutely anything will grow here! We dabbled with a few things this summer. Next year will be even more amazing, I think. The picture of yours is a nice inspiration.
That's amazing. But not in winter, surely? Ain't it cold??
Yeah, it's bizarre. It does feel cold and it's more humid here than Colorado but it's probably around 40 degrees still. (Not sure because I'm continually confused by the celsius .)
P.S. I just realized that it was a different post where I commented on our roses still growing in winter. doh! This is why I posted the photo. But it is bizarre to have roses in December. I took this picture two days ago.
That's crazy!!! Our seasons are a bit screwy too.
I think in Celsius too. Fahrenheit I've never understood haha.
Why the move to Denmark?

STOPAre foxes also an invasive species like the rabbits and blackbirds?
Fuck yeah. And they still do stupid things like cull kangaroos, don't pick up the bodies and thus feed them further. They steal chooks and wat native wildlife. Australia has more threatened species than anyone due to dumb colonial mindsets that exist to this day. Don't even get me started on feral cats.

I'm staring at my mom's garden in winter these days. She is going to move from the house that was family home for over 30 years. So much to pack up, all while in midst of Christmas with the little one. She already took some cuts to plant at her new space (it's an apartment under my dad's apartment in my brother's house that was my grandma's house which my father was supposed to inherit, but as he never saved a dime, my brother jumped in, took a huge credit and is in charge now), checking out the garden space there. We measured the inner of the apartment yesterday, but I'm sure she already measured the garden, too. Though it's bigger, it'll be easier to handle among three parties that get along (for now).
Anyway - I feel her state of mind in every word that you write. But as you write - the experience that you gathered will help you build a paradise, maybe even more beautiful than the last.
Jamie said yesterday, as he organized his shed, that we probably are feeling emotional because all of our possessions have been moving around. I'm not sure I feel that. I'm just glad to have a shake up and get rid of the old and organize shit. It feels fresh.
It's definitely hard moving though in a short time span. That seems hard for your Mum for sure but at least she has help, right? And it seems like a positive move for her. Like ours!
My big problem is impatience. It'll be a while before Jamie's keen to get the shovel out.
I feel like I'm getting ready for something new, too. Not right yet, but soon. I'd really like something together with my gf, though that's always a risk, especially considering that we're with kids (of which one is in puberty). Will see...
For mom it's more necessity than wanting. But that's what it is, and there are a lot of perks of living in the new flat. She'll make it her own in no time, both the flat and the garden. She already knows the neighborhood very well, a lot of her friends live there - I think out of 14 houses, 9 are friends of hers. Still, lots of nostalgia.
good for the environment, good for the body and mind, good for the hip pocket
I've always dreamed of building my own garden, I hope I can too. Anyway, your garden looksss sooo nice 💗
