Awesome views and a dry-weather house are a perfect combo that has kept us mostly outdoors here on our new land in Steung Kach.
So Many Porches 🛖 So Much Time
Actually I feel quite rushed to be honest, mostly because we bought this place with mostly borrowed money. It seems every waking moment should be spent on getting this place into shape so we can rent out the cabin on the cliff's edge.
We do make sure to spend a little bit of time in the water and on the various porches, especially the hammock huts down by the river's edge. There are so many different species of butterflies here, a photographer's dream, but I'll leave that to the expert @sreypov.
Hammock Huts Are Choice 👌
Eventually I'll be sure to give you all a proper tour of the land, but it's safe to say our favorite spot is the hammock huts. They're not rainproof, and structurally questionable, but we enjoy life on the edge figuratively and literally I guess. Anytime we want to go camping, all we have to do is make a 30-second walk, absolutely unbeatable.
A Truly Wild Forest 🌳
Of all the places I've been in Cambodia, the locals have more or less tamed nature and eaten all but the smallest species of wild animals out of existence. Here the extreme terrain and landmines have kept this wilderness safe for now, so if there was ever a chance I will have an elephant, sun bear, or tiger sighting, it might very well be here.
Unfiltered Water 🚰
We pump our water here straight from the river here, and it's quite a process involving a lot of running back and forth, and a lot of meters of old, dry, and brittle hose. I haven't written or said the English word "hose" in about 10 years, still feeling like I misspelled it, but let's move on.
Monkey-B Is Now The Porch Monkey 🐵
I wish there was a Cambodian tradition of rocking chairs, because this porch life would be perfect for a pair. That's okay, we're quite happy to be here and practically furniture-less just for the clean air and water. Monkey-B loves looking at the ever-changing river and walking the loose unfastened plank.
I've been a doing a bit of shovel work lately, so I find myself much hungrier than normal, and this makes me too tired to cook and eagerly awaiting whatever porch meal the wife is preparing. As you can see, the porch is unfinished, but that just keeps us alert and on our toes.
It's Cold At Night 🥶
I have never slept better in my life than with a heavy blanket in a cold room, and Cambodian weather never provided with such an opportunity, and life with aircon was always too expensive for me. I have lived at 3,100 meters in Colorado for many years, and often seen temperatures below -40°C, but even I wish I had a thicker blanket here in Cambodia, hard to believe.
When we fall asleep here, it's the kind of deep sleep like in a fictional fairytale, and I find myself going to bed hours earlier and waking up hours earlier than we did in Pramaoy. @sreypov even has an opportunity to wear her Ecuador clothing here.

I really enjoyed your review this time, friends, the place you live in has extraordinary nature, in addition to many beautiful animals such as butterflies, and animals such as elephants or tigers, there is a river that I really like, even you know, at least I went bathe in the river 2 times a day to bathe there.
I can see the happiness that radiates from your family in that new place, looks like I should also try to find a garden near the river and with beautiful nature like you guys, I'm also happy that @sreypov is an insect expert he he, because if he loves insects with all his heart he must also love his family with all his heart and soul, you are a harmonious and romantic family, I have to learn a lot from you.
This is a truly wild place, and I hope I get a chance to climb the mountain across the river some day. There is a trail and a military post near the summit. Sreypov is insect photography heaven here.
The cooking scene actually reminds me of your outdoor cooking back in Suriname. And now you got me thinking how cold it is in Celcius 🤨 you know, we Malaysian has very low tolerance on cold temperatures. We have the first hand experience of "cold wave" back in 2016, temperature dropped to roughly 16'C, bunch of idiots go out with their short sleeve and enjoy the cooling air, the next thing is bunch of them admitted into hospital due to some serious cold 🤣🤣🤣
We are indeed having some Suriname flashbacks, but at least this time around the primitive life is by design and choice. There is no weather data for this little area and microclimate, only towns 30 minutes away and not in the mountains. I have been wondering what the temps are here at about 3am, and now it just dawned on me that my digital handheld luggage scale has a thermometer. I need to find that thing.
By the look of it, it suggest to be around 18-20'C 😁
I'm soooooooo glad you went for this house!!!! Aka option #3 aka the top top favorite of all of us!
Congratulations, beautiful family! I'm so happy for you! I wish you lots of fresh air, clean water, hammocks, butterflies, a warmer house soon we hope and family love! Buying your first house together have been an adventure, thank you for sharing your long-time journey with us. Must be so exciting and beautiful!
I can't believe we got it, a dream come true. We have a lot of debt to pay off now, but soon we'll rebuild the cabin and get a renter in it. Thanks for stopping and good to see you Hivin' again.
I hope you get your tiger, man! I'd love to have a tiger friend at some point in time, hahaha. Although I'm sure your life there isn't pink-tinted, I'm even more certain that you and your family are happier, and that's really awesome.
Beautiful pictures and colors! Blessings to you!
Definitely our share of problems here too, but at least it's familiar territory and we know how to deal with it better here. This is worlds away from the lifestyle we had in Suriname. 🙏👊
A very extraordinary place.Your wife now does not need to hunt anymore for insects like beetles.
Because they are now very close to your place.
The place you are in is very nice.
Ohya, is the place you live close to school education?
Because I know your two daughters are still in school, and what about their school?
That is very true, there are so many insects here that I've never seen anywhere in Cambodia. Unfortunately there is no school nearby, but we are working on a solution to this problem. I can take care of their English curriculum here at home, but I can't help with Khmer education. It's a 30-minute drive to the nearest school, but that's a big distance here.
Today's post was quite varied from beginning to end, trying to highlight many topics today, water, photography, cooking and weather then sleep. Really your posts are quite varied. But I do know that butterfly photography requires a lot of patience, a lot of time.
My wife has so much patience, so she is better suited for insect photography than me. Thanks for stopping by my friend.
It's really a nice place, I paid more attention to the river next to your house and I think I can take lots of Macrophotography of insects and other small animal in that river. And in the afternoon I can also see the river view while watching the sunset.
The river is the only reason we bought this place. It is so magical, and you're right, a perfect place for insect photography. The views here in the evening are incredible.
Yeah, sometimes you should to review about the scenery at this river, maybe when sunset or sunrise coming, i think this is very nice. 👍
With a wonderful views of the outdoor, I will be also be spending a lot of time at the porch. I bought a hammock once from Thailand but it is now spoilt. Perhaps it's time to get a replacement.
We need new hammocks at the moment, but it's hard to find ones long enough for me here in Cambodia.
So much to do! I'm really looking forward to a virtual tour of your land and all your porches 😉 such a beautiful spot. If I wasn't living my own dream I'd be envious 🤩
I am definitely getting out the camcorder very soon for a proper tour.
Looking absolutely awesome!
Some of the best night's sleep I've ever had, too, is in the North Carolina mountains near running water when it's cold. A thick blanket cannot be beat.
It is very North Carolina-esque. I have some close friends that live on the NC, GA, TN border, and when I drove through this area, that's exactly the area I was reminded of. Every night is basically a camping experience.
That night is cold in the area, I know that on the high land has cooler temperature. The green forest behind your house make the air is cooler too.
It is so strange wearing my winter American clothes in Cambodia. I never thought I'd experience weather like that here.
You've got a beautiful place....so close to nature. The hammock would be a good place to take a nap, with fresh air around.
I wish I had more time to escape to the hammock hut, it's definitely the most prime real estate here.
I thought you would be camping. The property came with a house???
There are two small houses here, one shack-ish house on the highway, formerly for used for selling petrol, and two hammock huts at the river's edge. We often pitch a tent in the hammock huts for a camping night.
WOW, your pictures of butterflies are beautiful and clearly. Why don’t you give me those pictures?
HAHAHQHAHAHAHA
You already have so many beautiful insect pics, but sometimes I get lucky.
Awesome place. Looking forward to seeing the tour of the surrounding area :)
As soon as I can dig up the camera, that's one of the first things I'd love to do. Of course I'll have to wait until the mud situation is a little better.

Monkey-B loves the outdoors, much like myself. We could sit on the porch and watch the river for hours.
Thank you, I do my best but my wife is more talented at stuff like that.
