Lego Technic McLaren F1 car: Final stage

You're never perfect in this sport; there is always something to learn.

- Daniel Ricciardo [Former] McLaren F1 Driver -

It was a Lego sort of day, strong winds and rain prevented me doing what I'd planned, some DIY fixing at my other house and a hike in the early afternoon. I didn't mind though as it gave me the chance to complete the final stage of my latest Lego Technic build, the 2022 McLaren F1 car. It was only half a build-stage really, I'd already done a few hours a couple weeks ago, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I settled in with snacks, Cleo beside me sleeping on a chair and the Lego of course.

I'm planning to do some photos of the completed build with my camera when the weather fines up, I want to take them outside on the road, but for now I've added a few from the final stage so you can sort of get the idea of how it all came together.

This last stage was all about the rear wing [which was super cool to build and fit], the air intake and engine covers and the HALO device, basically a roll-over safety thing that protects the driver if the car was to flip, which has actually occurred in many F1 seasons, including this one. Of course, the wheels and tyres went on and then...it was done!

This was a really exciting build, Lego Technic always is, but this was special as I'm a huge Formula One fan and my driver, Australian, Daniel Ricciardo, drives drove this car in the 2022 season. Sunday 20 November was the last race of the 2022 season though and also happened to be Ricciardo's last race for the UK-based McLaren F1 Team.

I'm super-stoked with the end result of this build and the cool little features it has like working suspension, steering and engine pistons that move up and down in a firing-sequence as the car moves. It's typical Lego Technic, but it never ceases to put a smile on my face.

When I get some better images I'll do a post linking all the other stages to wrap up the build and will probably reveal my next Lego Technic build...if I've decided which it'll because right now I'm still tossing ideas around and being uncharacteristically indecisive.

Oh that’s who Daniel is 😆 my daughter has been watching a F1 Rocco series on Netflix to try to learn a bit more as her boyfriend is really into it so every now and again I hear about people on a first name basis like I should know who they are.

Looking good and looking forward to the nice weather on the road photos 🙃

Haha, yeah well now you know what's up. I've been watching F1 since the age of nine so I know a thing or two. I'll not know what to do with myself for the next few months until it comes back on for 2023.

I'll try and get the pictures done in the next couple weeks.

Uhmm... I know Lego but why is it called Lego Technic Build?

There is Lego Classic and Lego Technic. The latter is a more complex thing, gearboxes, differentials, moving parts, remote control and so on.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I only know Lego blocks. That might be the classic Lego.

Yep, that's right. Technic is a more technical thing. YouTube it and see.

I imagined the whole scenario of Cleo by her side, the rain, her snacks and that beautiful car made art with the lego in her hands would be a perfect snapshot for her nephew Galen's Christmas 22nd card... just here thinking

No snacks for Cleo, they were mine. Cleo is my cat. Although, more than a cat because I like her more than most people.

I agree with you cats are good companions, in fact, I would like to sleep as they do, it would be great. Greetings to Cleo from Lady Hunter, my cat. 🐱

Super sexy build. Gotta check mom's house for my old Lego classic blue box, those things are expensive these days. Wish I had time and money to play with technic, or those Revel plastic models are also super fun.

I really enjoy Lego Technic builds and usually find something new and interesting in each one, but yep, they're very costly.

I've seen Lego get huge prices, especially for the sets they retire. I really want the Bugatti Veyron but am not willing to pay the price for a second hand set. Maybe I'll cave in some day. 😁

I only found the Bugatti Chiron over here for ~750 cad 🤢

I know right? Too hot for me...I need to steal one instead. (Just joking.)

If you are going for that kind of risk you better try to steal the real car \o\

That's a good point...I know where to get one too!

I built another McLaren back in June of '21. Its a smaller set, but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. I need to fix the transmission on my Lambo so I can finally share that.

I didn't know there was another one. Is is Lego Technic?

I need to fix the transmission on my Lambo so I can finally share that.

I'll look out for it. I was thinking of building something like that next...but I'm also thinking of the mining equipment. I'm so undecided.

Click the link to see. Yes, it is Technic, although with only hand-of-god steering and no suspension.

There have been some bulldozers and front-end loaders over the years that have caught my eye. I have a crane set somewhere, but I think it is City and not Technic.

Oh sorry, I rarely click links in posts. Habit.

I actually remember that one. I had it in my head you were talking about a McLaren F1.

I'm diggin' this one (from the Lego website)

I have that. I completed the build, and discovered something had gone wrong in the transmission way back at the start. Discouraging.

Oh, that's the Lambo you're talking about? Now I'm bloody jealous!

I set it aside after writing part 5 of 6 because life got difficult and I had neither time nor space for the project.

You'll need to jump on the Oscar Piastri bandwagon for next season, and you already have the right coloured car

Nah, I don't like that guy.

Fancy. How sad were Mick's burnouts at the end? :D

Was a touching end to Danny's time at McLaren though, "We saw a gap in the sensor data" (while he's doing donuts).

I have a feeling Dr will be back and also that he needs the break. He's young, very experienced and a great driver when focused. I think he'll find a seat and do well.

Poor old Mick huh? I feel a bit sorry for him but at the end of the day, it's F1, one must deliver right?

Was a pretty great season, for the first one I've watched since a kid. Watched every session from Spa through to the most recent one. Already keen for the next year's action; considered going to Melbourne; but I think F1 is going to be better on the TV.

It was a pretty good season for sure and I'm the same, looking forward to next year.

I've been to a lot of F1 races, including Melbourne. Can I be honest? Melbourne isn't that good, you're better off saving up and going to Singapore. That one goes off! (On and Off track.)

Maybe one day I will, still think it will be much nicer to watch on the TV, unless I can save up enough for business class. I've got long legs.

TV covers more of the whole thing, but being there in person is good too. Maybe one day huh? I'm working on going to Singapore next year for the seventh time.

Outstanding! I hope I get to see some photos of that!
