Throwback Time: Tetons Edition

tetons_tbt_2.jpg

Does anybody still do #tbt? When I first heard of that I thought it was an excuse to drink beer. Since I quit drinking I have found out that is not the case. Lacking both beer and a ready topic for a post, I've decided to go with it, whatever the case may be.

These photos are all from Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and date back to late August 2017. I'd intended to spend several days camping and shooting there but neglected to account for the solar eclipse. The population of Wyoming doubled there for a few days and camping was on a first come, first serve basis so I only got to spend about three days there.

The first two photos are from the edge of Jackson Lake, taken about twelve hours apart. I woke up early the first morning to try and get sunrise shots down at the lake (2nd shot is from that) but the haze I'd attributed to the heat the night before was still there. Half the west was on fire apparently and the haze was a gift from those blazes. Made for some fun sunsets but the rest of the time it was a bit frustrating.

The Tetons are fun to shoot, only place I've been where you don't have foothills cluttering up your shot. With my time constraints (I had a date with Yellowstone), I didn't get a chance to actually make it up into the mountains, had to settle for shooting it up instead. Any of y'all out there on the hive made it up into the Tetons?

It's been long enough since I was there that I'm ready for a return visit, who is down for a road trip and some backcountry? Alright, time to throwback Thursday and move on to Friday. Stay safe out there in the world y'all!

I've never seen those mountains before. Very jagged peaks. Are there no foothills there?

Your first shot gave me an instant feeling of peacefulness (it's not been a peaceful day). You've got some nice contrasts in there. Fourth photo is my favourite. I'm partial to being close to mountains and those are unusual. Maybe you'll make it into the mountains next trip.

No foothills really, it's mostly just flat scrub brush or grassland, then Jackson Lake and then on the far shore the mountains just jut up. Never seen anything quite like it and I've seen my fair share of mountains.

That first shot is from my attempt to shoot the sunrise, it was maybe 0730 and just so quiet and calm and peaceful. Thank you! I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains, so I'm quite partial to them as well :D Fingers crossed!

You're welcome!

That's quite interesting, no foothills. I've been studying mountain ranges the last year or so. I've seen some unusual stone formations. This is one of those. I'm going to search on the internet to see more. Have you ever been to Devil's Mountain or the Petrified Forest National Park?

Fingers crossed!

Done! lol

Yeah, I'd never seen the like before. I'd spent a month or so wandering the Rockies in Colorado immediately prior to heading for the Tetons, the difference caught me by surprise. Speaking of unusual stone formations, are you familiar with hoodoos? They have no connection to the Tetons but they're one of the more interesting ones I've happened across.

Never been to either I don't think. Where's Devil's Mountain located?

That's what it made me think of, since I've been to the Rockies in Canada. It's such an extreme notable difference.

I'm not familiar with the hoodoos but I will be after today, thanks for that. You've been there in person?

Devil's Mountain is in Wyoming. I've never been there though. The rock formation fascinated me for several reasons. One of them is that the stone structure is identical to The Giant's Causeway in Ireland.

Let's go!
