A bit of history.
Maracas are some of the oldest instruments in the world. The earliest record of its existence goes to the Taino tribe from Puerto Rico. These instruments were used in rituals. Its use in music outside religion starts after the colonisation.
Type of Maracas in Venezuela.
There are at least 3 trypes of Maracas that are used in Venezuelan music. Musician refer to them according the the region. We have Llaneras, Orientales, Tuyeras (centrales).
Maracas Llaneras
The popularity of music from our plains has led to the stylisation of these maracas. They are painted. Their sticks are turned to be on different shapes according to he maker. Its sound is supposed to imitate a horse galloping. This is probably because people from this regions are usually great horse riders and their Identity has been codified in their music.
The calabash is usually smaller and the filling is mixed. This means the sound isn't too bright. The seeds used for maracas in general are called "capachos" or "achira". The English name of the plant is Indian Shot.

Maracas Orientarles.
Bigger in size, these maracas are meant to imitate the sound of waves crashing on the shores. Since the east of Venezuela is know for its beaches and fishing and ses life is an important part of this region, the sea has gotten a spot on its music. It makes even more sense since a lot of our instruments came by sea until they were adapted to our music.
The sound of these maracas is more open and they have a lot more volume. It's playing style also requires more use of the wrists in order play them properly.
After a brief introduction, you can listen to José Rivas (+) "Pijillo" playing the maracas.
Maracas Tuyeras.
Smaller in size and usually played by the singer, these maracas have the toughest playing style. Singing and playing them is a challenge. Joropo Tuyero isn't a widespread genre of music. That's the reason why not a lot of people knows how to do this.
Joropo Tuyero is a difficult genre of music. It is played by two people. One plays the harp; the other, sings while playing the maracas. This alone is a challenge to keep track of time measures.

Maracas can be adapted to different kinds of music. They are a rhythmical instrument. Their size and filling are changed to fit any kind of music. Ernesto Laya is one of the musicians who has paved the way for maracas getting into world music.

Mi familia por parte papá es músico, mi abuelo solía tocar varios instrumentos y junto con sus hijos y compadres armaba una banda...mi Padre era quien tocaba las Maracas, y aun así cuando ve unas las toca...yo lo intente pero el me dijo que no tengo buen oído ajajkaa las maracas es un instrumento que debes tomarle mucha práctica para poder tocar bien .

Imagínate. Es mi familia directa no hay músicos. Pero estoy seguro que soy el resultado de una generación acumulada de ningún artista. Los primos de mi papá tocan varios instrumentos. Hay primeros por el lado materno que tienen la misma habilidad.
Bueno, tocar cualquier instrumento requiere dedicación. No es tarea fácil.

El papá de mis hijos tiene una colección de maracas, que lamentablemente tuvimos que dejar en Venezuela.
Aunque no era profesional, siempre gustaba de cargar un par en el carro y tocar como acompañante si la ocasión se presentaba.
Bueno, no hay que ser profesional para coleccionar algo así. Ir preparado por si se atraviesa la parranda siempre es bueno. Por aquí hago lo mismo cuando salgo.
Te dije lo de ser profesional, no por la colección, sino por la tocada... aunque a veces andaba más perdido que Marco el día de las madres, eso no lo inhibía de tocar sus maracas acompañando alguna pieza
Ja weno. Son cosas. A veces el entusiasmo es suficiente para hacer una cosa; en la mayoría de los casos, no. Igual mientras se disfrute lo que se hace sin dañar a más nadie todo bien.
En nuestra música las maracas son indispensables. La verdad no sabía que habían varios tipos. Así que gracias por el conocimiento impartido.
Mi abuelo y algunos tíos en diciembre tocaban en las tradicionales parrandas y las maracas siempre estaban presentes.
Y como anécdota mi mamá le regalo a mi hijo unas estando pequeño y al poco tiempo desaparecieron misteriosamente JAJAJA eran ellas o el niño!
Son curiosidades y datos que no saben todos, pero es importante hacer la salvedad. Las maracas están presentes en muchas cosas, pero no en todo. Hay géneros donde están de más.
Ja, ja, ja, ja. De esos cuentos de los instrumentos desapareciendo me sé unos cuantos. Siempre hay una anécdota de ese tipo rodando por ahí.
Es que tu me dirás, una criatura de 4 años con unas maracas!!!! Auxiliooo jaja
Mamá y mi hermana e incluso yo les comprábamos instrumentos. Tuvo teclado, batería,, cuatro, tambor, acordeón, flauta dulce, guitarra, armónica y las benditas maracas.
Te podrás imaginar mi felicidad jaja.

Berro, comparar una hija al salitre es un nivel. ¡Qué cosas! ¿Nada sobrevivió? ¿Nadie aprendió a tocar nada? Muchos instrumentos en esta lista. Me da tristeza pensar en todo lo que se ha perdido. 🥲

Miranda esta en la orquesta, por ahora con la flauta dulce hasta que le asignen el violín y Matías una vez que arranque la orquesta quiere formar parte del programa alma llanera tocando la guitarra. Es un programa también del sistema de orquestas.
En casa la música es parte importante al igual que la lectura. Yo toco el violín, estuve en la orquesta muchos años, mi hermana la segunda toca guitarra y saxo además cantamos un poco. Ella más que yo jeje.
No, vale. Pero eso sí es genial. Ahora con más razón quiero ir para allá a hacer chocolate. ¿Cuándo es el meetup de Margarita?
