INDISCRIMINATE DUMPING OF REFUSE IN ILE-OLUJI, ONDO STATE || HARMFUL TO HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

Good day friends, yesterday, I visited where people dump their refuse without considering the effects on the environment in Ile oluji, Ondo state, Nigeria. One of the major problems affecting the developing countries is indiscriminate refuse disposal and Nigeria is not an exception. Big cities like Lagos and Ibadan have this problem of indiscrimate refuse disposal and this has led to environmental and health problems in such cities. Important measures are supposed to be taken before disposing refuse because majority of the items dropped are plastic and heavy metals which are very toxic for human health and the environment as well. There are different type of waste that are being dropped here, Agricultural waste, the town is an Agrarian town in which Agriculture is the major occupation of most people and the waste generated in processing their produce are being dumped here, in addition, Solid waste from different household are being brought disposed here. There are some people who come from far places to dump their refuse at night so that their identity will be unknown.

Ile oluji is a town with a Population of over 170,000 people. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse has been one of the major problems in the town. There are people who come from nearby villages to dump their refuse here. This has caused serious arguments and confrontation among the inhabitants. This heap of refuse has been one of the major causes of air pollution to the people living in the town. This site is very close to a Higher institution of learning in the town. This is not good for the health of the students and staff of the Institution.

This heap of refuse could lead to
disease outbreak such as Malaria, typhoid, Diarrhea and many others. It should be noted that toxic materials being released to the enviroment can be absorbed by plants and this can be consumed by human beings and this is very dangerous to their health. These refuse site is very close to residential houses and offices and it's not a good idea for people to inhale poisonous gases which escape from this site. Waste generated from events such as burial, marriage and so on are being brought here as well as from residential homes.

I believe there are so many known ways by which this refuse can be reduced. There are some of these materials can reused such as plastic containers and so on, some of these materials can be recycled to form another product and there are some that can be used to generate energy. Advanced countries make use of these materials and generate money from them.

It's is very important for the Government to have a good and standard waste disposal management so that this will curb the indiscriminate dumping of refuse. Also there should enforcement of laws, there are some laws which prohibits people from dumping refuse indiscriminately, the enviroment Should be free from these toxic materials like the advanced countries. People Should be cautious of their enviroment and protect it.
