Oak Grove Tombs

When I did this post of a walk through the Oak Gove Cemetery close to our house, a few people commented on the Tomb I shared in that post and I promised to do a follow up post focusing just on the tombs and here they are

Oak grove Cemetery was opened in October 1843, originally only 2 Acres, but in 1868 they added 14 Acres and more in 1887 today the cemetery is 100 Acres in two lots.

Now you may have noted I say it was officially opened in 1843 so one may think the tomb in the first shot with the year 1844 was one of the first tombs there, but that may not be the case, I have also read that after it was expanded some older graves from other sites were moved here.

It is the first publicly-owned cemetery in New Bedford. It contains an exclusively African American section as well as narrow pathways, some meant for carriages while others just for foot traffic.

Many of the lots were purchased for entire families, which are set off by granite curbing. A number of these curbings would originally have had a surrounding wrought fence with an entrance gate. This was meant to keep the spirits in their place at rest so they would not wander and disturb the living.

its is a beautifully maintained cemetery that I have walked through many times

I could resist a mono edit for this next tomb with just a touch of color, I suspect its an image people will either like or hate, as I am sharing it i like it but would be interested to know what your thoughts on this next image are

Another tomb, the Shadows on tombs give a kind of eerie feel to them I think

Wow, thanks for the follow-up. Such interesting structures in the ground. I don't think we have anything in this area that even comes close to that type of cemetery structure. A few crypts here and there, but most look like tiny buildings ... but...I think you've given me an idea for a future Wednesday walk -thx!

Thanks for the visit, this is such an interesting cemetery to visit

Looking forward to your Wednesday Walk Post inspired by this :)

If you didn't say that it's a cemetery, I wouldn't have thought it is one. It doesn't have a spooky feeling at all. And you have beautiful shadow photos too. I am sure @melinda010100 and all other shadow hunters would love to see those.

Thanks I didnt even think about the shadow hunters silly me LOL

It must be cold in there - freezing cold in Winter, but maybe in Summer you wouldn't need an AC 😎

Sorry for that, JJ, but these were my first thoughts when I looked through the photos.

I like this almost mono edit - it draws your eyes to the walled-up entrance. And I like it that the tombs look like built into little rolling hills 😃

That's good, because I don't want any problems with your neighbors who are living inside the tombs, in case they don't understand my jokes 🤣

Wow, 1843, that is some real history there. It is crazy to think how many generations have passed through that way. I have always enjoyed the rich history of the New England area. Awesome stuff!

Thanks I find I always find something new each time I walk through there
Well of course not new but something that hasn’t caught my eye before

Wow... the mono edits are so thought provoking!
Beautiful, @tattoodjay!

Thanks have a great day

My goodness that tomb at the bottom is amazing! like a hobbit hole hehehe
they are all really quite extraordinary.

but hmmm - was the separate space for African Americans during a time of segregation? Too bad they felt the need to continue that.

Either way- gorgeous shots and I can imagine taking a walk there would be like a beautiful, ethereal, reverent, hushed, appreciative time! hehehehe :)

I am guessing it was back then a sad time in history

Thanks for the kind comments

yes - it was. (and in some ways - still is.)

but we live and learn and grow.

hey, i'm proof that there can be change! My mother and father got married 4 years after it was illegal to do so. And I am the product of their love

(i'm a variety of nationalities - but generally, half-black/half-white)

so... yes.

we live and learn and grow.

and even with the sadness - I can still see the beauty of that place and appreciate it for what it is, and what it is no longer.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos with us all :)

That’s all we can do is live learn and grow and hope others do the same

The mono shot just works so well here, it really speaks to me. The fact that the tomb is built into the hill like that is something you don't see too often. Old cemeteries are so interesting and full of character with their old wives' tales about spirits escaping and such. I know my Grandfather's family has a family plot outside of Boston and exactly as you say, the wrought iron fence surrounds the family with a gate to keep them in.

I am so happy for you, surrounded by history! Thanks for showing off the tombs and giving further history. I wonder why they moved the other gravesites unless the family requested it or they moved a graveyard? They did a bit of shifting in Boston, for various reasons.

Thanks again!

I do find walking through the cemetery so interesting
I was curious why they moved some graves but did not find any specifics perhaps as the city expanded is my guess

I just looked this up: Cemeteries must serve the burial needs of contemporary local communities, and often this can only be accomplished through destroying older graves so that newer interments can take place. ... The headstone is either smashed and buried with them, or removed to an inconspicuous place.

This must mean the ones that have no surviving interests? I know that Ben Franklin was moved from Boston to Philadelphia, so it is not uncommon, but, I had no idea they destroy graves?

No I had no idea of that either quite shocked by it actually I wonder how they define no surviving interests

I actually need to do more research on that. I can understand Boston and how there is nowhere to put more people, but, that shocked me. Truly.

Yes I am intrigued and may do some research also

Good! I am interested in what really is going on.

Thank you for the follow up post on the cementers, I really am highly interested in graves etc. They have so much history of people's lives.

My Pleasure to share I find it so interesting walking and observing in the cemetery

I love cemeteries; I'll admit that it's a really strange fascination, but there is something so absolutely peacefully beautiful about them that strikes me. Thanks for sharing!

Well I dont find it strange as I love them also, walk often through this one
