People from childhood to adulthood tell you that you need to work hard. And the thing is that you are supposed to work hard but not always. The thing is that working harder does not always solve the problem.
Then there are people who tell you to work smart. But the thing is that you can't work smart in every situation and you are forced to work hard in some things. So how does working harder and smarter works?

Work Smart when You Have Options
You have tons of options. And you don't know what to do with them. In such case you don't understand what to do with your options. In such case you have to learn to be smart. You have to learn to do assessment on what works and what does not work.
In conditions where you understand what is smart and what is hard. You have to pick the options that leads to the smart work. Most of the time that sort of the mindset is what works. So try being smart and pick the options that reduce your hard work.
Work Hard when You Don't Have Options
You are in desert and you have to keep moving till you find town or village or water source. So here no amount of smart work would help unless you see options. And there are some of the situations where you literally have none. And so you have to work hard towards an option.
Most of the time when you get more than 2 options, you would become smart about them. You get less options towards the goal. You have to work harder. You need to understand that being smarter does not always help and you have to push towards the life in hard way too.
Work Hard in Smart Way towards Right Path
You want to be rich? You have to work hard in your job or business and then move smart way towards the growth. But this approach is kind of compounding effect and does not appear in a straight line. So that path needs to be created as you move ahead.
You make options some of the times. You asses the situation in a smart way. And then find out the way where you have to work hard and then do your work. This way the right path is slowly created and you get the best of the both worlds.
Conclusion
Life does not work in black and white. So smart work always requires some amount of the hard work. And you have to be pretty much good with the understanding of the when to go with what type of the approach.
