Fungi Friday - Finds of the Week

in FungiFriday2 years ago

Here are a few more fungi finds for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

I've been keeping an eye on the polypore that is growing in the middle of downtown Chicago. It appears to be a type of ganoderma and possibly Ganoderma tsugae as you can see it becoming lacquered and smooth. Once it finishes drying out I should be able to see what type of ganoderma it might be.

For reference here is where it is growing amongst the tall skyscrapers. Poor tree probably has root rot and that is why the ganoderma is able to infest it. I suspect they will have to cut it down eventually.

Out in the forests many different mushrooms were growing. Here's a nice little red russula emetica.

Here is a bolete getting attacked by bolete killer aka Hypomyces chrysospermus. I wonder what bolete species is growing under all that fungi? Maybe its a bicolor.

The puffballs are starting to show up for fall. This little guy is a Apioperdon pyriforme.

Here are some even smaller ones. Eventually they are going to be growing all over the place and fortunately they are edible. They are really good pan fried with potatoes.

I found a tiny little white mushroom growing in some mulch. I'm guessing it is a meadow mushroom.

Farther down the path I found some of the same mushrooms in various stages of growth. They are definitely meadow mushrooms.

The gills start out pink then start turning brown and as they get even older the gills become really dark. These are an edible mushroom but be wary of harvesting white mushrooms as there are many different deadly species that have similar features.

Here's a really old one. Typically I like to harvest these when they are growing in a wild field (not chemical laden mulch). Also I like to harvest them when their gills are still pink.

Here is some really young false turkeytail aka Stereum ostrea. Eventually they will bloom out more and start turning from orange to brown and green and sometimes even some other strange colors.

That's all for now, thanks for looking and happy #fungifriday

You have had a busy week. Lots of great pictures and so many different mushrooms to =)

Oh yeah every week is busy, fortunately there is time to check for mushrooms along the way lol.

Sounds like an excellent use of your time =)

The yellow mushroom is like a mushroom like an amazing robot

It is the strangest person in the city for sure.

why say that because I see your mushrooms are very strange and unique, very rare to grow in my place, especially the yellow ones,

woooowwww ... beautiful findings that you share every Sunday, like a lot of unique mushrooms in your area.

Yeah the fall season is the busiest time for mushrooms in my area. Hopefully I'll be able to find a ton of new species this year.

great to hear from you, wooww...that's great, hope you got them over a ton.

He looks special, growing up amidst the hustle and bustle of the streets

He's on the easy slow schedule as humans race by all the time lol.

i love the beauty😍

Hello dear friend @sketch.and.jam good day
What a beautiful variety of mushrooms you have found this week, I love their various shapes and bright colors
I appreciate that you let us know these beautiful photographs
have a beautiful day

I got yellow, red and white this time, hopefully more colors of mushrooms will be growing as fall arrives.

I was very interested in seeing a mushroom in the city that could grow on the roots of that big tree.Do the people there take good care of the mushrooms?

Most the people in the city don't even notice the mushroom is growing there. They are too busy rushing off to their next meeting.

yes friends, with their busyness this fungus can thrive there.Have a nice day my friend

And that city mushroom, he looks good week after week, Amazing shot too at some of the other types of mushrooms there are showing. Extraordinary

Maybe in a couple more weeks it will finally be matured into a more reishi looking mushroom.

Looks like it will. But I hope the tree will last longer for the next mushroom

It almost looks like food.

There's a species of mushroom we eat in Nigeria. It's black and stretchy.

Sounds like wood ear mushroom to me.

Oh really? I'll check that out on Google. I have no idea you know

Yeah the latin name is Auricularia auricula-judae. It has anticancer properties and works really well in soups. I like to boil it in spices and salt then dry it out again to make a sort of jerky or chip out of it.

Wow. I love it in soups though. very tasty. Makes the soup look busy😅

Random trip through the woods on the edge of my yard turned up some puffball, turkey tail (or false), and a few random white mushrooms. I was actually sneaking over to the edge of my neighbors policy to see if they moved the old white camaro lol. They have lots of junk on their property and lately have been actually clearing some of it 👏 but anyway... I'm always interested to see the overlap between mushrooms here and what you find.

Now you know what to post of #mushroommonday I wonder if the puffballs are still fresh, so long as they are solid white on the inside they should be fine.
