Monday Drumday: Flume

For #Drumday this week I have a song I recorded last week for the @radioliquorice show that our local music community put together.

I opted to cover the song Flume by Bon Iver. This is the first time I have used my newish Yamaha DD-65 drums in a song. Recording was done in Ardour on Linux (Ubuntu Studio).

I started by recording the guitar part with my Taylor accoustic. I did not record to a click, so the timing may vary a bit. Then I added the vocals with some backing vocals on the choruses. I also played my Tanglewood ukulele. Finally I played the drums. I went for a very simple pattern as I was more concerned with just getting through the song and just took a couple of takes. I will admit I did a little edit to get the final cymbal to line up with the last chord.

I used some compressor, EQ and reverb to polish the sound a bit. I really need to learn more about how to use those more effectively. I then used FFMPEG to make a video from the audio file. The whole recording process only took about an hour.

As I upload this the image I used in the video is not showing in the 3speak preview, but I will add it as a thumbnail anyway. It was just a screenshot of Ardour.

This has given me confidence to do more recording. I could try using MIDI drums to have more control. The only real issue with this is that the DD-65 does not transmit use of the high-hat pedal. I have tried it with Ardour and need to look more into it. It ought to be possible to split the drums into individual tracks so they can be treated separately. I could do this via Hydrogen.

Rock on!

This is really good. The song really suits your voice, and the whole thing holds together really well. Damn, making a video from audio out of ffmpeg - why didn't I think of that 😛 - do you just tell it to use a still pic as the video for the duration of the audio? I guess the pic would have to be in the same directory as the command line? Great job!

Cheers. It does help when I find a song I can actually sing :)

I was going to ask how you did your videos, but then I found this and it just worked in faster than real time. I was concerned when the image did not show when I was previewing it, but it seemed to come through okay.

I need to do more like this to work on my skills.

!BEER

Just spent about an hour trying to find which line of code works out of the multiple offerings on that link. Do you happen to remember which one you ended up using?

I just used OpenShot to do my videos in the end because KDEnlive isn't very quick at the old rendering. Stretched a still image manually across the length of the audio and exported. Took about 10-15 mins to render compared with nearly 2 hours in KDEnlive!

I used this command:

ffmpeg -loop 1 -i flume.png -i SteveC-Flume.mp3 -shortest -acodec copy -vcodec mjpeg flume.mp4

I've not done too much with the video editors, but at least we have some choice.

Brilliant, thanks!

Hey @radioliquorice, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Did you know that you can use BEER at dCity game to **buy dCity NFT cards** to rule the world.

That is really awesome! Do you know if they make something like a visual metronome that you could use to help you with the beat without adding the clicks into the music. Something that your vocal mic wouldn't pick up but still give you that guidance you are looking for. Even just a flashing light or something. I think you did great though and it may not even be something you need.

I could have enabled a click on Ardour. I had to use headphones anyway, so it would not get recorded. I have found it hard to play to a click when I've tried it before and used a drum machine instead. It's common to use guide tracks that are not on the final song. There are lots of tricks to making music. I've still got plenty to learn.

Ah okay, that makes a lot of sense. It has been forever since I did anything musical. Way before all of this new technology was around. I think I still had a walkman back then!

Oh the song is lovely, you have a good and beautiful voice that everyone will like to listen to your song day.

Wow it's pretty cool, I love it sounds good
