Applying these two actions has great value in life; They allow for time saving through wrapping up verbiage - lengthy writing or speech - succinctly so others may digest it, the key points, more rapidly. I use it a lot professionally (where possible/appropriate) and in my personal life when the "long version" isn't required. Summarising and paraphrasing...I like them a lot.
But not when people comment to me
There's a lot of people on Hive that feel inclined to comment on other people's post simply by summarising or paraphrasing what the author has actually written in the post themselves.
Lazy, unimaginative fuckers.
I'm not sure if they think it's clever, or if they think the author will think of them as switched-on and savvy or if they're just so fucken stupid that they can't read the post and comment with intelligence and validity. It's a wasteful comment, especially so to those who have taken the time to use their own intelligence, time and effort to author the original post - having it paraphrased back to them in a comment is not welcome.
Relevant, interesting, valid and concise
I think people commenting should make a concerted effort to combine the elements above when commenting on a post as a very minimum. Irrelevant comments don't have value, boring comments even less value, invalid commenting makes the person look like a dumbass and being verbose (too many words) puts undue time-pressure on others and that verbosity doesn't make them seem smart, just wordy.
Relevant, interesting, valid and concise.
Commenting on other people's posts is a great way to open up relationships, something I did from the very outset, and with continued effort it will pay off. It doesn't mean one has to write 400 words in comment to a 200 word post, it doesn't mean one has to be the most intelligent when responding...It simply means one needs to apply relevance, interest, validity and be concise...it doesn't hurt to add some passion and personality too.
Words are clever, a few can say a lot more than a lot if used well - what is not clever is paraphrasing or summarising what has been written in the initial post, the author wrote it themselves so don't need it to be reiterated.
Oh, and while I'm on the subject...responding with AI is as unwelcome as mindless and unintelligent paraphrasing and summarising of an author's post as well - You have a brain, use it.

lol so you're saying I still have a chance??
Oh yeah, you're my star fucken pupil...and here's a 100%er for your efforts.
I'm bringin' an apple tomorrow for my star teacher!
Well, that'll earn you a C- but if you make it an apple pie you'll get an A+ for sure.
Well I don't always go for the sure thing..sometimes I just gotta wing it. In light of that, I will be making apple turnovers, since I have green apples and puff pastry. Maybe even some real whipped cream. That is if I have enough ass left to whip it good lol.
Damn...now I want to come over this afternoon for a snack. I'm pretty sure I'd be welcome.
Aye, I reckon so.
I used to think paraphrasing at least proved someone had read the post, but now AI does even that. We might as well all stay in bed, eat crisps and let the machines write both the posts and the comments.
Well Shit...
Can I please stay in bed?
I am tired of delivering these machines.
Won't be long and they will be delivering themselves.
And then they'll start delivering us...to the gulag!
Like the Matrix we will be the "batteries"
Any comment with the word gulag in it is worthy of a 100%er. And here's me delivering it.
Hahaha. Thank you very much! Henceforth I shall insert the word 'gulag' into each and every comment.
Lol, if only I could insert 95% of the population into a gulag.
As long as I'm in the 5%, I heartily agree!
Paraphrasing does in a certain way, as you say, but it doesn't add anything new to the conversation and hardly makes me want to engage with the person. As for AI...goddamnit I hate that shit so much.
Well, If I may expose an additional thought.
In my opinion the comments from those quoted above are also insulting and offensive, even if that's not the intention.
Indeed, they don't seem to understand the negative impact their comment fuckassery has for them. Conversely, a reasonable comment by them would have some positive effect but they persist on doing what they want to do, as most humans will..
I guess they think theirs is a good comment or maybe they think they can disguise their shity comment with intelligence and value, and deceive the post owner.
I have no power at all here in Hive, financial I mean, but I've recieved shity comments that one can notice they do it to write something that counts engaging, maybe after a commentrewarder vote or gift, I don't know. The truth is it is annoying knowing they didn't read or watched one's content and comment any superficial or empty no sense shit down there.
People are lazy idiots, or just plain fucken idiots huh?
They are up to getting the lower mangos from the tree as it's said here.
Idiots? I agree
They think themselves skilled and smart assholes though.
I'm checking #weekend-engagement topics now. See what I can find there. Hopefully some engaging ones.
👍🏼
There are also spam comments, from those who write the same thing for everyone. They don't show that they've read the post; I think they only read the title, if they're lucky, or comment on the photo, which probably has nothing to do with the text. I've experienced all of these, and what they do is in poor taste. It's better if they don't comment
Yeah, it's clear to see when people do such things and to be honest I've actually caught out long-term "good" users doing the same on my posts...one of the reason I sometimes use titles and images that don't correlate to the text at all...like a trap...and some fall into it. Fucktards.
And they fall into the trap! Good technique, very good, like the one where you use photographs of bras!
Yeah, I've done that a few time. Fun.
Also fun removing the bras from their owners.
I enjoy removing another item of clothing from the man.🤣
Indeed...and the man probably enjoys it too.
Of course!
I think they just want to make it look like as if they have read the post, most likely who does that just pick whole text and feeds Ai asking for summary then write it down eventually making it look like more human... I agree it makes no sense, I mean any brained person wouldn't do that, but we have headless chickens in the world roaming around, hive can't be exempt
You're right and it's pretty easy to work out when they've not read it. Doing that to me is likely to earn a person one of these.
And I think it's well deserved, I would do that too
Good man, that's the way to do it.
I find there are more of these paraphrasers recently, all from a particular country, I reckon they all do it within their group. They're so freaking lazy and brainless that they don't even bother to check the reply, like this
Yeah, just a bunch of idiots trying to portray themselves as something they are not. They're not fooling anyone, except maybe other idiots.
The example above is clearly an AI response
I don't know what you mean.
The screenshot in the comment chain. I would suspect that as being AI.
Oh yeah, I deed. I think that was the point LUKT was getting at. So many idiots.
The great thing is that you can go look at the trend of someone's comments by going to their page: eg, mine: https://peakd.com/@holoz0r/comments and uh... reading them.
I found someone commenting on a short story I wrote and I suspected AI. I went and looked at their other comments, and yep. Formulaic and generated - not even a summary or a paraphrase, just a click (or more likely, an API query) to make a comment.
What concerned me further, is that when looking to the replies to that's account's AI comments, was that other people were engaging with the AI response as though it was genuine and heartfelt.
Computers didn't pass the Turing test. Humans are failing it everyday.
Yep,the Turing test...what percentage of humans would fail it these days I wonder.
It's nuts that people are ok with AI responses back and forth, why even bother? Might as well give up on life and jomp of a tall building...do the rest of us a favour.
Cleaning human remains off streets would be hard work. Collecting the microplastics and silicon of shattered computer components would be too.
Perhaps just put them in some barrels in a country town, like nuclear waste. :)
When I really like a post, and want to write a comment, I often end up going too long (I could easily write a post on that topic myself 🙂).
When I don't have anything meaningful and interesting to write in a comment, even though I read the post, understood it and even though I like it, I skip writing.
Sometimes I stick to the saying "Silence (not writing) is golden".
I give short answers only when I thank someone who supports me, and I don't like to write a single word in the answer when someone praised my post, a picture or a location where I traveled in a comment.
Well my friend, do it with a vote, not a single "bravo", for which you still expect my vote.
We all do it differently and sometimes the difference in relationship between the author's of the posts you read will mean different commenting as wellm you seem to do your way pretty well so I'd say well done on that count.
GalenKp looking at comments dropped by brainless other people &
I don't know now what to comment here. All I can say is I agree
Here is my take - users on hive - due to greed - whenever they see a post worth a lot value, or an author having more hive power, they incline to drop a comment even if they don't understand the post.
Yeah, that's me exactly. Where did you get that video of me? My office security camera feed?
I think you're right though, people see a big stake and figure they might get some voting with their fucken stupid comments. They often do get a vote from me too...a downvote.
I've seen this quite a bit too. I think some if it has to do with people using translators to either read the post or actually comment on it. I don't think it applies for everyone, but it feels like a lot of them English might not be their preferred language.
Yeah, I get that. I suppose maybe they should not bother. Translators do a shit job and paraphrasing my posts back to me in a comment is hardly going to work in their favour.
Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. I was just trying to play devil's advocate. It honestly kind of annoys the hell out of me!
That tiny swap from have to has and trimming the s says a lot about how you chase clarity. Those micro edits change cadence and keep meaning tight, which saves the reader from little speed bumps. Do you use a simple checklist for passes like this or just trust your ear and a strong coffee?
If I see a typo in my own posts I edit it out. It's part of my continual improvement ethos and nothing to do with coffee. I have always been this way on most aspects of life. Rather than chase perfection (which does not exist for humans) I seek to continually improve.
That makes sense; perfection’s a mirage, but those small edits add up to cleaner cadence and clearer intent. My micro-edit thought was in that spirit, more flow than fuss. Do you set a cutoff where you hit publish and stop tinkering, or do you revisit posts later if something still nags at you? Coffee may not drive it, but it sure helps spot a stray s.
I normally write then proof read at the same time and publish. Rarely do I read my posts back but if I see something I want to change I do it, as with the word swap in this post to make it read better. I saw it in the preview text on my post feed by happenstance and realised it needed changing. I don't go back over my own posts once published. No time for that.
Same here. Proofreading as you write keeps the rhythm, and the feed preview is a sneaky truth teller that makes clunky lines pop, so a quick word swap can fix a lot. I do not see much value in going back unless something really screams. Better to put that time into the next piece.
I think I failed at this. Yesterday I sent this message to that hot girl:
Hi,... . I'd like to go on that coffee date we talked about. Do you have any plans this weekend?
She has not responded. That is a shame. I liked her a lot. Oh well, at least I tried.
Seems a decent enough comment, maybe she's just busy at the moment and hasn't had the time to respond. Maybe she doesn't want to. If it's the latter, then shame on her for being rude and not responding.
Silence is the worst answer. It is super annoying. Also I hate getting my hopes up for no reason.
I don't think you got your"hopes up for no reason*. There was a reason. Anyway, life is full of setbacks, best not to let them win.
Well, I am happy for every comment I get, but it makes me happier if I can feel I touched someone. That way, I know my work wasn't for nothing; it evoked some positive feelings. I think this is the last thing that will make a change from AI-written and human-written texts. My strongest part is photography, which is also my biggest passion, and I don't really expect long comments on how someone sees the photo. Simple - cool shot does a work, I guess. But yeah, I can feel you if you put so much energy and thought into the text, you appreciate some constructive comment or feedback, not an empty summary.
Valid, concise comments are good...people write 400 words in comment and sometimes that's ok but often it just equates to wasted time. I like to see comments that make me want to comment back.
Sometimes at least for me, reading the summarized version makes me more confused as I cannot grasp the idea 😅
Yeah, probably because whevee has summarised or paraphrased hasn't actually read in full (or understood) the text in the first instance.
People often underestimate their own intelligence 🙂
And overestimate it to.
One thing that I always check myself on is not falling into the "relatable" trap, the "something similar happened to me" thing. Though especially with you that's not a problem, as you generally ask for just that, our personal experiences. it's more of a real life conversation thing that I don't like, but I try to apply it in the digital space, too.
I love that peakD (and probably the other front ends) have the quoting thing, where I can just copy a phrase from the text and then add my thoughts underneath. Your brother does that a lot, and it helps a lot to keep comment conversations with several strings of narrative organized.
Azircon once told me that the "paraphrasing" is a tactic used on bloggers with very high HP, to peak interest and scavenge some "easy" up-votes, or so the thinking.
My comment on this post...
Thaaaazzz Right
Hmm and I thought I was the only one to get such "fishy" comments for some of my posts. Oh well. AI is really omnipresent these days, and it can be hard sometimes to distinguish between comments from AI or humans.
Hello sir, I don't understand why you are downvoting me. If I have made any mistakes, please explain them to me and please forgive me 🙏. I will try to correct all my mistakes and work better in the future.
No worries, and for the trouble you took to leave this mindless and valueless comment here's a downvote.
