Remember where you came from - a 5 minute Free Write - prompt "Immigrants"

The youngster looked over with a look somewhere between puzzlement and resentment. Across the street were two women in berkas going about their day. The youngster turned to his friend saying: "Those two and their sort will take all our jobs if we're not careful, you have to watch them."

Jim looked up and studied his friends face before addressing him saying: "Do you know anything about your history?"

"What do you mean?" came the reply from his friend. Jim continued: "Do you see that shop over there? Do you know what it used to say over the door? I'll tell you what it said. It said 'No dogs, no blacks, no Irish' "

The youngster looked at his shoes, as Jim continued: "Your great grand parents arrived in this country hungry, thirsty, wet, emaciated and penniless - they faced prejudice wherever they went. They worked tirelessly their whole lives and provided as best they could and 3 generations later you are lucky enough to not know what poverty is or what discrimination is, so I beg you to not judge people; treat every human with the same dignity and respect that you treat me with and you will go a long way in life. Don't ever judge a book by its cover or belittle anyone with misplaced remarks or derogatory statements. We are all human. We all have worth. we all have a story to tell and a life to live."

Five Minute Free Writes

I am back doing these Free writes again, and I must say that I am really enjoying them and can remember now why I used to do them most days in the early days when I first joined. This is my fourth Free write in a month, which I am delighted about and my first in 11 days.

When I first arrived on Hive or the previous chain, I would often struggle for ideas on what to write about, and there were two writing initiatives that really helped - one was called #fiftywords where you could use only fifty words to tell a story about a prompt word and the other was #freewrite which basically sets a challenge of writing a mini story within 5 minutes. I regularly took part in both, and people like @mariannewesta and @felt.buzz and loads of other brilliant people, so every now and then I see a post from @mariannewest and think to myself, go and do a freewrite, so that is just what I did two weeks ago and again 3 days ago, and I enjoyed it, so here I am back for another freewriting fix. I hope to continue to pop in every now and then to say hello.

Maybe you've never heard of the freewrites yourself, and if that is the case, I'd encourage you to have a go, read about todays prompt and how to enter below and above all else mind yourself and have a great day - smile, rub a dog, help a stranger and just be a nice human.

I don't know if "five minute free write" is the right name. People may not understand that you did more than five minutes work here. It takes a life time for an idea to float and then five minutes to write it. After that it takes twenty minutes to post it.
