Progress. Part 3

in Freewriters4 years ago

Making progress has two elements, first it's the obvious, taking action in the right direction, aka working on the right thing, and then second is acknowledging your progress.

The second one is a bit of a surprise because the general assumption is that if you're taking action you must be advancing, but progress is a human construct that exists mainly in the mind.

Progress is not out there, it's in your mind, it's in how you see/ quantity or track your efforts. And in case you're thinking this is not true because it can be proven using numbers, remember that numbers are just numbers.
If you have a smaller number and a bigger number, the difference is s not progress, that's you ascribing a meaning to a difference between two numbers in the context of achieving a certain goal.

So yes, progress is based on actual results but the way you interpret those results is largely dependent on what you focus on, and ultimately what you choose to see.

We tend to keep track of our efforts or our investments a lot more than the things they generate. If you did 300 push-ups last week how much muscle did you gained?
If you run 20 km last week what's your weight one week after? You don't know? Well that's because we take action and then we tend to assume a lot of things without really checking.
Keep track of your progress not by assuming but by paying attention, observing and measuring.

Seeing a positive difference between what you put in and what you get out, is going to give you the motivation to continue.
