ZapFic Friday: A Looming Darkness (Prompt: "Abbey")

in Freewriters2 years ago (edited)

For those of you who are either just now discovering me or the challenge I'm participating in, here's a basic description of what this is all about:

ZapFic competitions are events hosted by @freewritehouse, intended to offer a fun and creative way to compete against other creative authors - 3 winners are chosen to receive 1 Hive SBI share each! The rules are simple:

  1. On Fridays, one must create a well-crafted story in precisely 50 words using the prompt in the competition announcement post. On Mondays, it's the same concept, only the story must consist of 240 characters or less (I think the closer you get to 240, the better your odds at winning are).
  2. You must use the #freewritehouse and #zapfic tags in your post.
  3. A screenshot of a word counter showing proof of words/characters MUST be included in the submission post!
  4. A link to your submission needs to be shared to the announcement post within the allotted time (typically within 3 days of the challenge's posting time).

If you're interested in participating, check the announcement post here!

Now, without any further ado, here is my submission

The Abbess glanced about the courtyard, watching the flickering lights of candles snuff out as her wards retired to their quarters for the night. While making rounds to secure windows and doors, she espied a strange tattooed figure in bearskins leering at her. "God help us, the Pagans are here..."

Great introduction to the contest

Thanks! I've been involved in Zapfics for a while now, and I really enjoy them. Figured I would spotlight it a little bit for folks who find my post rather than just drop the story and be done with it. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! !PIZZA

Cool.
Appreciate the pizza

What's wrong with Pagans? 😅 Very nice story... I find it quiet funny to write these short fictional stories.

Haha, nothing "wrong". Historically speaking, they would burn and pillage wherever they went, especially abbeys and cathedrals where valuables were often stored by the Church. I suppose the time period is somewhat vague in this story, but I was going middle ages during the viking conquest of Wessex and Mercia.

Isn't it fun? I enjoy the challenge of creating a decent story in a very short amount of words! Thanks for stopping by! !PIZZA !CTP

Yeah, I've heard about Wessex and Mercia the first time in the 'viking' show on TV.
You are welcome and thanks for sharing!

Oh man, I LOVE that show! If you like Vikings, you need to watch The Last Kingdom on Netflix. So good

Believe it or not. I don't have Netflix. Amazon Prime is all I got. I will check if this is available there.

It's a Netflix original, so I doubt it'll be on prime. We have a lifetime membership to Netflix through our T-Mobile plan, that's why we have it. Wouldn't pay for it otherwise. Lol.

Lots of good stuff on Prime though! Have you watched The Man in the High Tower?

No, that doesn't sound familiar. I have a few movies and series on my list but most of them are on the list for 3 or 4 months now.

Yay! 🤗
