El calor en Veracruz y en Tampico era mas bien húmedo, pero era el calor al que estábamos acostumbrados de cualquier forma. Cuando íbamos a la playa el aire se antojaba fresco. En cambio cuando llegamos a Monterrey la temperatura podía ascender en aquellos años arriba de los cuarenta grados a la sombra, pero agravada con los fuertes vientos calientes, hacía que la sensación térmica empeora mucho.
Esa tarde papá llegó con un abanico que había sacado a pagos en una mueblería, los primeros días de verano dormíamos muy bien, pero teníamos que acostarnos muy tarde, porque a las once de la noche aún se sentía el calor que irradiaba la calle y las paredes, el problema vino después cuando cortaron al luz en toda la colonia.
Recuerdo que no podíamos dormir con el intenso calor pero entonces a mamá se le ocurrió que podíamos dormir en el techo de la casa, desafortunadamente el techo en su mayor parte era de lámina a excepción del baño, no hubo mas remedio que dormir todos amontonados arriba de techo del pequeño baño.
The heat in Veracruz and Tampico was rather humid, but it was the heat we were used to anyway. When we went to the beach the air seemed fresh. On the other hand, when we arrived in Monterrey, the temperature could rise in those years above forty degrees in the shade, but aggravated by the strong hot winds, it made the thermal sensation much worse.
That afternoon Dad came with a fan that he had taken out for payments in a furniture store, the first days of summer we slept very well, but we had to go to bed very late, because at eleven o’clock at night we could still feel the heat that radiated from the street and the walls, the problem came later when they cut the electric power in the entire colony.
I remember that we couldn’t sleep with the intense heat but then it occurred to mom that we could sleep on the roof of the house, unfortunately the roof was mostly made of sheet metal except for the bathroom, there was no choice but to sleep all piled up on top ceiling of the small bathroom.
