the archaeological museum of Mantua.
The museum is part of the complex of the ducal palace in fact the ticket is cumulative and unique, available at the ticket office that there is in Piazza Sordello in Mantua. The day I made my visit to the ducal palace, unfortunately for lack of time, I had been impossible to visit the archaeological. Two weeks ago, however, I finally managed to visit it, on the very first Sunday of the month, when the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, allows you to visit museums and places of state culture for free and is really a great opportunity for culture lovers.

Il museo fa parte del complesso di palazzo ducale infatti il biglietto è cumulativo e unico, acquistabile presso la biglietteria che c’è in piazza Sordello a Mantova. Due settimane fa però sono finalmente riuscita a visitarlo, proprio durante la prima domenica del mese, nella quale il ministero dei beni culturali e del turismo, permette di visitare i musei e i luoghi di cultura statali gratuitamente ed è veramente una bella occasione per gli amanti della cultura.
Some History:
The museum is located in the building of the former market, initially of silkworms and then fruit and vegetable, as reported by the same inscription visible on the facade, even before, around the 500 was home to the theater of the Gonzaga, ancient masters of the city, later donated to the city became the seat of the museum.
The layout is modern and minimal, it contains collections ranging from prehistory to the Middle Ages, all found in the Mantua area.
There are numerous excavations and numerous finds from different historical periods that together help us to reconstruct our history.
Il museo si trova nell’edificio dell’ex mercato, inizialmente dei bachi da seta e poi ortofrutticolo, come riporta la stessa scritta visibile sulla facciata, ancora prima, intorno al ‘500 era sede del teatro dei Gonzaga, antichi padroni della città, in seguito donato alla città divenne sede del museo.
L’allestimento è moderno e minimal, contiene al suo interno collezioni che spaziano dalla preistoria al medioevo, tutte rinvenute nel territorio Mantovano.
Numerosi sono gli scavi e numerosi i reperti di diversi periodi storici che insieme ci aiutano a ricostruire la nostra storia.
I was very curious to visit this museum as I catalogued some exhibits for my university internship. They all came from the site of Bagnolo san Vito and were pieces of figured pottery and not needed both revision and cataloging. It was a really good experience, although I did it in the middle of a pandemic, so from home I could not see directly the finds, but the staff and especially the archaeologist official who runs the museum, they were able to help me and guide me in the best way. At the end of the internship I was issued a certificate which I now keep very much.
Ero molto curiosa di visitare questo museo poichè ho catalogato alcuni reperti per il mio stage universitario. Provenivano tutti dal sito di Bagnolo san Vito ed erano pezzi di ceramica figurata e non dei quali c’era bisogno sia di revisione che di catalogazione. E’ stata veramente una bella esperienza, nonostante io l’abbia fatta in piena pandemia, quindi da casa non potendo visionare direttamente i reperti, ma il personale e soprattutto il funzionario archeologo che dirige il museo, hanno saputo aiutarmi e guidarmi nel migliore dei modi. Alla fine dello stage mi è stato rilasciato un attestato che ora conservo gelosamente.
Lovers of Valdaro - Prehistoric burial
A highlight of the prehistoric collection are the lovers of Valdaro, as they immediately strike the emotional part of the viewer. It’s a prehistoric burial where you can see two lovers, two young people, almost embraced, around them blades in flint typical elements of the funeral equipment of the time.
Spectacular to think of how they have been preserved in that position for so long and I imagine the emotion of the archaeologist who found them.
They are not the only burials that have been found in the area, this is one of many. Below I place the photos of the following.
Pezzo forte della collezione preistorica sono gli amanti del Valdaro, poichè colpiscono subito la parte emotiva dello spettatore. E’ una sepoltura preistorica dove si possono vedere due amanti, due giovani, stretti quasi in un abbraccio, intorno a loro delle lame in selce tipici elementi del corredo funerario del tempo.
Spettacolare pensare a come si siano conservati in quella posizione per così tanto tempo e mi immagino l’emozione dell’archeologo che li ha ritrovati.
Non sono le sole sepolture che sono state trovate nella zona, questa è una delle tante. Di seguito vi posto le foto delle seguenti.
There are many finds of great importance for the different historical periods, for example as regards the Etruscan age the discovery of an Etruscan alphabet, engraved under a ceramic tableware.
Moltissimi poi sono i reperti di grande importanza per i diversi periodi storici, ad esempio per quanto riguarda l’epoca etrusca il ritrovamento di un alfabetario etrusco, inciso al di sotto di un recipiente da mensa in ceramica.
For the Roman era very important discovery was the funerary monument to the gens Caepia, datable between I a.c and I d.c. and thanks to the inscription, found fragmentary, it was possible to trace the family to which probably one of the wealthiest families of Roman Mantua. The shape of the monument resembles a kind of temple. Incredible to see how the representations were so similar to reality and how much importance the ancients gave to funerary monuments, because for them, after death, what remained was the memory in posterity, being remembered was just a way to "come back to life".
Per l’epoca romana importantissimo ritrovamento è stato il monumento funerario alla gens Caepia, databile tra il I a.c e I d.c. e grazie all’iscrizione, trovata frammentaria, si è potuto risalire alla famiglia di appartenenza, probabilmente una delle famiglie più abbienti della Mantova romana. La forma del monumento ricorda una specie di tempio. Incredibile vedere come le rappresentazioni fossero tanto simili alla realtà e quanta importanza davano gli antichi ai monumenti funerari, poichè per loro, dopo la morte, ciò che gli rimaneva era il ricordo nei posteri, l’essere ricordati era appunto un modo per “tornare in vita”.
