| Today it's time for another relatively small church in Patras. This one was built in a way that I would usually expect from Greek-Orthodox churches, with a central dome. It is called Holy Church of Saint Dionysios (Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Διονυσίου). | Heute ist es mal wieder Zeit für eine relativ kleine Kirche in Patras. Diese wurde in einem Stil gebaut, den ich am ehesten von griechisch-orthodoxen Kirchen erwarte, mit einer zentralen Kuppel. Sie nennt sich Heilige Kirche des St. Dyonisios (Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Διονυσίου). |

| It is located a bit north of the city centre, close to passenger ferry terminal, therefore easy to reach for any tourist. The exact address is Agiou Dionisiou 36, Patra 26223 (Αγίου Διονυσίου 36, Πάτρα), which is - funny enough - in the district Agios Dionysios. So, you have the Church of the Saint Dionysios at the street Saint Dionysios in the district of Saint Dionysios. (& don't ask me why the transcription varies, I have no idea.) | Sie liegt etwas nördlich des Stadtzentrums, nahe am Hafen für Passagierfähren, also leicht erreichbar für Touristen. Die genaue Adresse lautet Agiou Dionisiou 36, Patra 26223 (Αγίου Διονυσίου 36, Πάτρα), lustigerweise im Stadtteil Agios Dionysios. Also hat man die Kirche St. Dionysios an der Straße St. Dionysios im Stadtteil St. Dionysios. (Keine Ahnung, warum die Transkription variiert.) |

| For a change, I found some information about the church. After Patras was freed from Ottoman rule in 1828, the area where the church is now was settled by Greeks from the island of Zakynthos. In 1829 they built a church designated to Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos. For some reason this church was torn down in 1909. It took a while for the town to find a new plot, but after almost 20 years, they finally in 1928 built the new church in the place where it is now. | Ausnahmsweise habe ich mal Infos über die Kirche gefunden. Nach der Befreiung von Patras 1828 siedelten sich in der Gegend Griechen von der Insel Zakynthos an. 1829 bauten sie eine Kirche, die sie ihrem Inselheiligen St. Dionysios von Zakynthos widmeten. Diese Kirche wurde im Jahr 1909 abgerissen. Nachdem man eine Weile brauchte, um ein neues Grundstück zu finden, konnte man nach fast 20 Jahren schließlich 1928 eine neue Kirche dort bauen, wo sie jetzt zu finden ist. |

| As with most Orthodox churches there is some nice iconography to be found. Over the side door on the south side, there is this picture of Saint Paul, which you can see above. The fence around parts of the church has some nice metalworks, featured below. | Wie bei den meisten orthodoxen Kirchen ist sie mit Ikonographie versehen. Über der Seitentür im Süden findet sich ein Bild des Heiligen Paulus, das oben zu sehen ist. Der Zaun um Teile der Kirche zeigt einige nette Metallarbeiten, unten zu sehen. |

| Beside the church is a tiny chapel where people can light a candle (which to me is reminscent of Buddhist temple, only there they usually don't use candles, but incense sticks). Inside the chapel you find the usual decoration. | Neben der Kirche befindet sich eine winzige Kapelle, wo man Kerzen entzünden kann (erinnert etwas an buddhistische Tempel, nur nutzt man dort eher Räucherstäbchen). | Below is the frontal view with the main entrance. Not bad for a fairly small church. Note the few & rather small windows. | Over the main entrance are 3 more pictures of saints. Sadly I couldn't get a good shot of the middle one - which, I suppose, is Saint Dionysios - because it was too far back. To the right is Saint Gerasimus of Kefalonia. He lived in the 16th century & spent some time in Zakynthos before he went to Kefalonia. | Über dem Haupteingang sind 3 weitere Ikonen. Konnte die mittlere (vermutlich St. Dionysios) leider nicht vernünftig fotografieren, da sie zu weit zurückgesetzt war. Rechts sieht man den Heiligen Gerasimos von Kefalonia. Er lebte im 16. Jh. & verbrachte einige Zeit auf Zakynthos, bevor er nach Kefalonia ging. |

| The windows may be few & small, but if you are lucky (or come in the evening), you can see that they are not without charm. They have quite nice colours which remind me of the Saint Martin lanterns we made at school when I was a kid. | Es mag nur wenige kleine Fenster geben, aber wenn man Glück hat (oder abends kommt), sieht man, daß sie doch einen gewissen Charme haben. Schön bunt, in Farben, die mich an die St.-Martinslaternen erinnern, die wir als Kinder in der Schule bastelten. |

| Well, so much for this (comparably) small church. Particularly if you come or leave by ferry, it's probably worth a quick visit. After I had taken the photos there, I went to the coast, which is just 100 m to the west & enjoyed the sea view: | Soweit diese vergleichsweise kleine Kirche.
