While in North East England a few weeks back, we made a day trip to Dunstanburgh Castle. We had never been before so it was a first for us, and we were not disappointed !
The castle was huge, and sits on a high point right on the coast over looking the land. The sea and cliffs provide defence all along one side, with the prominent position and massive walls providing the rest.
There are no roads leading to the castle, so we had to walk from the village of Craster, and from the car park it was around a 2 mile walk. The weather was lovely for it, so that was no problem - apart from the moaning kids who didnt enjoy the walking part !
The castle was built between 1313 and 1322 by the Earl of Lancaster, who was in opposition to the King at the time (Edward the 2nd) - but it didnt work out for him. He got captured an executed, and had only visited the castle once - no luck !
As can be seen, it is in quite a ruined state - but all maintained by English Heritage so safe to visit. There is an entrance fee unless you are members like we are.
I was taken aback by the size. The walls enclose a huge space (9.96 acres), and the views around from the towers were quite stunning.
Enough remains in place to give you a good enough idea of what was there. And it must have been magnificent in its time, and also quite daunting, due to its size and defensive position.
It played its part in border skirmishes between Scotland and England, and again in the English Wars of the Roses, but had fallen into ruin by the 16th century.
The castle also played a role during world war 2, when some defences were put in place to help guard that section of the coast !
In terms of the visit, we loved it. There was a lot to see and explore, and the weather just could not have been better, although it was quite windy on the headland.
The walk to and from it were quite enjoyable, with lovely views out to sea. Quite a lot of people made the walk as well as us, as its quite a popular tourist destination.
And there was so much to see - you could easily spend a half day plus, visiting the castle including the walk.
Making your way there from Craster was quite interesting, as it just got bigger and bigger the closer you got.
And it makes for lovely photos, and it also gets painted a lot - I guess its all about the romance of the ruins.
Anyway, well worth the visit - and highly recommended ! And I can certainly see us going back to visit at some point.

I wouldn't mind the walk just to see this. Lovely shots!
Aye, it really was worth the walk - with it looming on the horizon and getting bigger the closer you got to it - quite impressive !
I can tell how massive it is from the size of the things/people around/in it.
That was a sad fate of Edward but with this majesctic place... He is remembered everytime...
Thia castle is awesome. And what a breathtaking view with the surrounding sea and grasses
The castle really was cool - the views were just stunning
Great pictures, there was life in these ruins, things change
Many thanks !

My goodness, this castle is quite an ancient ruin! The surrounding walkway is really beautiful, like a medieval movie, well, obvi, it's Europe, really beautiful places! Beautiful pictures, wonderful tour. 🙏🙌🤩⭐💯🍻💥

That castle has had a tough life but it is still standing at least a lot of it. Thanks for sharing the great photos.
Aye - it has literally been through the wars !
