Istanbul (Turkey), 2.part

When you are in Istanbul, you definitely have to visit Hagia Sophia (Aja Sofija) and Sultan Ahmed Mosque (also known as Blue Mosque). They are very close to each other.

Hagia Sophia was built as an Orthodox church, built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian in the old town of Constantinople (the original name of Istanbul). It was turned into a mosque in 1453 when the Ottomans captured Constantinople. By the decision of the president and "father" of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, it became a museum in 1935. Under great pressure from Erdogan and his supporters, it is being returned to the status of a mosque.

The name Hagia Sophia means holy wisdom.

When going to the mosque, girls have to wear a scarf around their heads. And of course, before entering you have to take off your shoes.

It's a special feeling to be here in this beautiful place.

Another great attraction is Blue Mosque. It is an Ottoman-era historical imperial mosque. We went inside the mosque, but it was being renovated so we couldn't see much and I have only a few pics from outside.

We were mostly on the European side of Istanbul, but one day we went on the Asian side by a ferryboat.

a view of the European side

When you go to the Asian side of Istanbul you cross Bosporus. It's a narrow strait of Istanbul and represents a section of the Asia-Europe continental boundary. It divides Turkey into two: European Turkey and Asian Turkey.

On the Asian side, we went to eat something and drink tea. Also, we saw the Maiden's tower, located on a small island.

We went back to the European side and ate another balik ekmek. This one was very tasty.

We had to try this famous kumpir, which is a baked potato mixed with cheese and butter and filled with various side dishes. We only wanted a few ingredients, but the guy insisted on putting everything so we listened to him and it turned out good, maybe too many pickles. 😅

Lastly, I'd like to show you one special part of Istanbul called Balat. It's the traditional Jewish quarter in the Fatih district of Istanbul. Everything here is colorful and has a special vibe.
