Martial Glacier: a little snow hiking, Ushuaia - Argentina 🇦🇷 Glaciar Martial: un poco de senderismo por la nieve, Ushuaia - Argentina

We had already spent several days seeing from afar the imposing snow-capped mountains that surround the city of Ushuaia, and it was time to see some of them up close, to touch the snow, and asking at the hotel we were suggested to go to the Martial Glacier.

Ya teníamos varios días viendo de lejos las imponentes montañas nevadas que rodean la ciudad de Ushuaia, y llegó el momento de ver alguna de cerca, de tocar la nieve, y preguntando en el hotel nos sugirieron ir al Glaciar Martial.

We took a cab early in the morning and went there, the entrance is only 7 km from the city center. The mountain is within a protected natural area and many activities can be done there, for example in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding and in summer hiking and canopy.

Tomamos un taxi temprano en la mañana y nos fuimos hasta allá, la entrada queda a sólo 7 km del centro de la ciudad. La montaña está dentro de un área natural protegida y allí se pueden hacer muchas actividades, por ejemplo en invierno se practican deportes como el esquí y el snowboard y en verano el senderismo y el canopy.

Although I didn't see any skiers because it was October and there was no more snow for that, I was very excited because it was the first time I visited a ski resort and a glacier. I would have liked to ride the chairlifts and see everything from the heights, but they were not working.

Aunque no vi esquiadores porque era octubre y ya no había nieve para eso, estaba muy emocionada porque era la primera vez que visitaba un centro de esquí y un glaciar. Me hubiese gustado montarme en las aerosillas y ver todo desde las alturas, pero no estaban funcionando.

Anyway our goal was to do some hiking and admire the views of the city. We asked at the entrance and were told that there were several trails, we saw the map and decided on the main one, which takes you to the glacier viewpoint.

De todas formas nuestro objetivo era hacer un poco de senderismo y admirar las vistas de la ciudad. Preguntamos en la entrada y nos dijeron que había varios senderos, vimos el mapa y nos decidimos por el principal, que te lleva al mirador del glaciar.

Although it was a bit chilly, there was sunshine and a radiant blue sky, the surrounding landscape looked so beautiful.

Aunque hacía algo de frío, había sol y un radiante cielo azul, el paisaje alrededor se veía hermosísimo.

We started to climb and I saw that on one side of the path there was a stream running, it was the melt water, and of course it was super cold, I bent down and drank some, was it drinkable? I didn't even think about it at that moment.

Comenzamos a subir y vi que a un lado del camino corría un riachuelo, era el agua del deshielo, y por supuesto estaba súper fría, me agaché y bebí un poco, ¿era potable? Ni lo pensé en ese momento.

Then we took a detour to get into the snow for a while, although I already knew the snow, I was excited because I hadn't touched it for years.

Luego nos desviamos para meternos un poco en la nieve, aunque ya conocía la nieve, me emocioné porque hacía años que no la tocaba.

At the base of the mountain and its surroundings there are many lengas (Nothofagus pumilio), a representative tree of the Patagonian forest.

En la base de la montaña y sus alrededores hay muchas lengas (Nothofagus pumilio), un árbol representativo del bosque patagónico.

The higher we climbed, the more snow there was on the trail, so it was necessary to walk carefully because we didn't have special footwear for that terrain.

Mientras más subíamos, más nieve había en el sendero, así que era necesario caminar con cuidado porque no teníamos calzado especial para ese terreno.

As I looked back, the views of the city and the bay were getting more incredible with each step.

Al mirar atrás, las vistas hacia la ciudad y la bahía se iban poniendo más increíbles a cada paso.

By this time, our shoes and feet were cold from the contact with the snow, but what did it matter, look at this place!

A esas alturas, nuestros zapatos y pies estaban fríos por el contacto con la nieve, pero qué importaba, ¡miren este lugar!

According to what I read later, because of its semicircular shape similar to an amphitheater, the Martial is what is known as a cirque glacier. I also learned that in the past it was larger, but today it is considered a glacial remnant.

Según leí luego, por su forma semicircular parecida a un anfiteatro, el Martial es lo que se conoce como un glaciar de circo. También supe que antiguamente era más grande, pero hoy en día es considerado un remanente glaciario.

I kept going and reached a panoramic point, my mom didn't come with me because there was more snow there, it was almost up to your knees, and she preferred to stay and rest for a while on a rock while I climbed a little more.

Seguí avanzando y llegué hasta un punto panorámico, mi mamá no vino conmigo porque había más nieve allí, te llegaba casi a las rodillas, y ella prefirió quedarse a descansar un rato en una piedra mientras yo subía un poco más.

There I came across a yareta, a typical plant of this region that I met on the previous day's excursion to H Island. I liked the way it looked, it is like a quilted plant.

Por ahí me topé con una yareta, una planta típica de esta región que conocí en la excursión que hicimos el día anterior por la Isla H, me gustó su aspecto, es como acolchada.

And then I had that snowy giant in front of me, how small the person who was climbing it looked. I would have loved to summit it, but I didn't have what was needed at that moment to do it, no proper shoes, poles, supplies, etc., but anyway I was happy to have been close to it.

Y luego tuve de frente a ese gigante nevado, qué pequeña se veía la persona que lo iba escalando. Me hubiese encantado coronarlo, pero no tenía lo necesario en ese momento para hacerlo, ni zapatos adecuados, bastones, provisiones, etc., pero de todas formas quedé feliz de haber estado cerca de él.

Other interesting facts about the Martial Glacier are that it is about 1,000 meters above sea level, that it is the source of the Esperanza stream, the city's main water source, and that it is named after the commander of a French scientific expedition, Louis Ferdinand (1882-1883), whose last name was Martial.

Otros datos interesantes del Glaciar Martial son que está a unos 1.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, que allí se origina el arroyo Esperanza, la principal fuente de agua de la ciudad, y que su nombre se debe al comandante de una expedición científica francesa, Louis Ferdinand (1882-1883), cuyo apellido era Martial.

I went down little by little so as not to slip, half of my pants were already wet from the contact with the snow, but as the sun was shining, they started to dry. My mom was very comfortable waiting for me sitting on a tree trunk.

Fui bajando poco a poco para no resbalarme, ya tenía la mitad del pantalón húmedo por el contacto con la nieve, pero como había sol se fue secando. Mi mamá estaba muy cómoda esperándome sentada en un tronco de árbol.

After a couple of hours walking we were already hungry, we had seen that there was a tea house and restaurant downstairs, so we went there.

Luego de un par de horas caminando ya teníamos hambre, habíamos visto que abajo había una casa de té y restaurante, así que fuimos para allá.

We bought some sandwiches and went to eat them outside near the river. When I finished I took out some cookies I had brought and a cute dog appeared, my mom was scared because he was big, a Saint Bernard, but he was super tame, he just wanted cookies 😃, so I gave him one and he laid down for me to pet him, what a tenderness ❤️, it was a perfect ending for this excursion.

Compramos unos sándwiches y fuimos a comerlos en la parte de afuera, cerca del río. Cuando terminé saqué unas galletas que había llevado y apareció un lindo perro, mi mamá se asustó porque era grande, un San Bernardo, pero era súper manso, sólo quería galletas 😃, así que le di una y se echó para que lo acariciara, qué ternura ❤️, fue un final perfecto para esta excursión.

Ok no me esperaba ese final, qué animal más grande jajajaja! entonces es verdad lo que dicen, que son un amor xD. Yo creo que también me hubiese asustado.

Ella va por ahí bebiendo agua sin pensarlo jajaja, eso es puro de manantial seguramente! xD

No quiero ni comenzar a imaginarme la sensación de la ropa mojada por la nieve, pero estando allí echarse para atrás sería imperdonable, creo que llegaste mucho más allá de lo que otros se hubiesen atrevido estando sin calzado y ropas para la ocasión.

Valió la pena porque las fotos son increíbles en persona tuvo que haber sido una cosa de otro mundo. No sé si es más emocionante ver al hombre ese subiendo o al muñequito de nieve, este último ¿ya estaba ahí? quisiera pensar que lo hiciste tú, aunque eso hubiese sido un poco imprudente.
