Seeing Rio de Janeiro from the height of Pâo de Açúcar and a visit to Niterói - Brazil Series #13 [ENG-ESP]

On my third day in the city I decided to go to another iconic place, the Pâo de Açúcar (Sugarloaf), where two peaks are connected by a cable car. From there I enjoyed spectacular views that left me even more in love with Rio de Janeiro.

En mi tercer día en la ciudad decidí ir a otro icónico lugar, el Pâo de Açúcar (Pan de Azúcar), donde se encuentran dos picos conectados por un teleférico. Desde allí disfruté de espectaculares vistas que me dejaron más enamorada de Rio de Janeiro.

From my hostel in Copacabana I took a bus to the Urca area and before 9:00 a.m. I arrived at the cable car base station, bought my ticket and in a few minutes boarded the cabin with other visitors. The first stretch takes you up to the Urca hill, which is 220 meters above sea level.

Desde mi hostal en Copacabana tomé un autobús hacia la zona de Urca y antes de las 9:00 de la mañana llegué a la estación base del teleférico, compré mi boleto y en pocos minutos abordé la cabina junto a otros visitantes. El primer tramo te lleva hasta el cerro de Urca, que se encuentra a 220 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

The day was perfect, with a blue sky that highlighted the beauty of the landscape even more. We got off at the Urca hill and I walked around the place to see the city from different points.

El día estaba perfecto, con un cielo azul que destacaba aún más la belleza del paisaje. Nos bajamos en el cerro de Urca y caminé por el lugar para ver la ciudad desde distintos puntos.

All the views are incredible! Guanabara Bay, Vermelha, Flamengo and Botafogo beaches, and even the Christ the Redeemer monument can be seen from here. Given these breathtaking landscapes, it is easy to understand why Rio de Janeiro has earned a place among the cities considered the most beautiful in the world.

¡Todas las vistas son increíbles! La bahía de Guanabara, las playas Vermelha, Flamengo, Botafogo, y hasta el monumento al Cristo Redentor se divisa desde aquí. Ante estos impresionantes paisajes fácilmente se puede comprender por qué Rio de Janeiro se ha ganado un puesto entre las ciudades consideradas como las más bellas del mundo.

On the Urca hill there are several services for visitors: restaurant, children's playground, souvenir store, open-air theater and also a heliport for those who choose to take a ride in the air.

En el cerro de Urca hay varios servicios para los visitantes: restaurante, parque infantil, tienda de recuerdos, teatro al aire libre y también un helipuerto para los que optan por hacer un paseo por el aire.

Then I took the cable car again to continue to the Pâo de Açúcar (Sugarloaf) hill, which I read is so called because at the time of greatest sugar cane production between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, this product was stored in blocks that had a shape similar to this hill and that is where its name originated.

Luego tomé el teleférico de nuevo para seguir hasta el cerro Pâo de Açúcar (Pan de Azúcar), que según leí se llama así porque en la época de mayor producción de caña de azúcar entre los siglos XVI y XVIII, este producto era almacenado en bloques que tenían una forma parecida a este cerro y de allí procede su nombre.

This hill has a height of 396 meters above sea level and if the views from Urca were impressive, from here you don't know how to describe them, mind-blowing? It could be a good word 😵.

Este cerro tiene una altura de 396 metros sobre el nivel del mar y si las vistas desde Urca eran impactantes, desde aquí ya no sabes cómo describirlas, ¿alucinantes? Podría ser una buena palabra 😵.

The cable car is not the only way to reach both hills, there are also trails and climbing possibilities.

El teleférico no es la única manera de llegar a ambos cerros, hay senderos también y posibilidad de escalar.

At the top of Sugarloaf I went through a wooded trail where I had the chance to see some animals, including lizards, birds and monkeys.

En la cima del Pan de Azúcar me metí por un sendero boscoso en donde tuve la posibilidad de ver algunos animales, entre ellos lagartijas, aves y monos.

It wasn't easy to photograph this monkey, he was moving too much 😅.

No fue fácil fotografiar a este mono, se movía demasiado 😅.

At the end of this short hiking route, I went around all the viewpoints to continue contemplating Rio de Janeiro from the heights, in one of these views I could just catch how a plane was going to land at Santos Dumont airport, the largest in the city after Galeâo.

Al terminar esta corta ruta de senderismo, di una vuelta por todos los miradores para seguir contemplando Rio de Janeiro desde las alturas, en una de esas vistas justo pude captar cómo un avión iba a aterrizar en el aeropuerto Santos Dumont, el más grande de la ciudad después del Galeâo.

Almost every spot here is ideal for taking photos, so as long as your camera's memory allows it, there's no need to economize on shots.

Casi todos los puntos aquí son ideales para hacer fotos, así que mientras la memoria de tu cámara te lo permita, no hay por qué economizar tomas.

Here you can also learn a little about the history of the cable car, which was inaugurated in 1912, with a total distance between the two hills of 1,401 meters. It was the first to be built in Brazil and the third in the world. There is an old cabin on display and informative posters.

Aquí también puedes conocer un poco sobre la historia del teleférico, el cual fue inaugurado en el año 1912, con un recorrido total entre ambos cerros de 1.401 metros. Fue el primero que se construyó en Brasil y el tercero en el mundo. Hay una vieja cabina en exhibición y carteles informativos.

At the end of my visit to the Sugarloaf I went to the city center to continue walking around, I wanted to see other beauties, but this time more of the architectural type. After a short lunch break, I arrived at XV de Novembro Square and took the ferry to Niterói, a town on the other side of Guanabara Bay.

Al terminar mi visita al Pan de Azúcar me fui al centro de la ciudad para seguir paseando, quería ver otras bellezas, pero esta vez más del tipo arquitectónico. Tras una breve pausa para comer algo, llegué a la Plaza XV de Novembro y tomé el ferry hacia Niterói, una población que queda al otro lado de la bahía de Guanabara.

This maritime transport is used by many people who commute daily between downtown Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, so it is not just for tourists. I bought my ticket and got on, it was quite crowded, the trip takes about 15 minutes.

Este transporte marítimo lo usa mucha gente que a diario se traslada entre el centro de Rio de Janeiro y Niterói, así que no es sólo turístico. Compré mi boleto y subí, había bastante gente, el viaje dura unos 15 minutos.

At the terminal in Niterói I asked how to get to the Museum of Contemporary Art and they told me which bus to take, it was not far from there. Part of the route goes along the coast and the scenery is very beautiful.

En el terminal de Niterói pregunté cómo llegar hasta el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y me indicaron qué autobús tomar, no quedaba lejos de allí. Parte de la ruta bordea la costa y el paisaje es muy lindo.

And what's so special about this museum? Well, look:

I'm a fan of modernist architecture and that's where Oscar Niemeyer, one of the most famous architects in Brazil and the world, comes in. This museum is one of his works and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to visit it.

Soy fan de la arquitectura modernista y allí entra Oscar Niemeyer, uno de los arquitectos más famosos de Brasil y el mundo. Este museo es una de sus obras y no quería perder la oportunidad de visitarlo.

Although its appearance is reminiscent of an extraterrestrial spacecraft, Niemeyer designed it as if it were a flower that grew in that space on the edge of the coast. It was inaugurated in 1996 and has four exhibition spaces: first floor, first level, mezzanine and second level. I was not lucky enough to see it inside because it was Monday and it was closed for maintenance, when you are on vacation you forget that museums are not open that day 😂, but at least the outside areas were open to the public and I was able to see it up close from several angles.

Aunque su apariencia recuerda a una nave extraterreste, Niemeyer lo diseñó como si se tratara de una flor que creció en ese espacio al borde de la costa. Fue inaugurado en 1996 y posee cuatro espacios para la exhibición: planta baja, primer nivel, entrepiso y segundo nivel. No tuve la suerte de verlo por dentro porque era lunes y estaba cerrado por mantenimiento, cuando uno está de vacaciones se le olvida que los museos no abren ese día 😂, pero al menos las áreas externas estaban abiertas al público y pude verlo de cerca desde varios ángulos.

I leave you with a message that I liked very much and that was inside the bus I took to return to the ferry terminal in Niterói: "Respect animals, it is a crime to run over animals (Federal Law)".

Los dejo con un mensaje que me gustó mucho y estaba dentro del autobús que tomé para regresar al terminal de ferrys de Niterói: “Respete a los animales. ¡Atropellar animales es un crimen! (Ley Federal)”.
