Strolling in Parque del Este, an icon of Caracas - Venezuela [ENG-ESP]

On Tuesday I was running some errands in the area of Los Palos Grandes, in Caracas, and since I finished early, I wanted to take advantage of the time to walk around a bit. What was nearby? Parque del Este (East Park) or Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, as it has been its official name for a few years now.

El martes estuve haciendo unas diligencias por la zona de Los Palos Grandes, en Caracas, y como terminé temprano, quise aprovechar el tiempo para pasear un poco. ¿Qué tenía cerca? El Parque del Este o Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, como es su nombre oficial desde hace unos años.

It was not long before 12:00 noon, and the heat was doing its thing, lately all over Venezuela temperature records have been broken, but no way, I really wanted to visit the park, it had been a long time since I had been there. At the entrance I noticed some changes, the kiosks for example, painted very colorful.

Faltaba poco para las 12:00 del mediodía, y el calor estaba haciendo de las suyas, últimamente en toda Venezuela se han batido récords de temperatura, pero ni modo, tenía muchas ganas de visitar el parque, hacía tiempo que no iba. En la entrada observé algunos cambios, los kioskos por ejemplo, pintados muy coloridos.

I entered through the part where the parking lot is, there was some shade over there. This park is very special to me, when I was little my parents used to bring my sister and me almost every weekend, sometimes we would go with our cousins too, and then as an adult I lived several years nearby and I used to come jogging very early in the mornings before going to work.

Entré por la parte donde está el estacionamiento, había algo de sombra por ahí. Este parque es muy especial para mí, cuando era pequeña mis padres nos traían casi todos los fines de semana a mi hermana y a mí, algunas veces íbamos con los primos también, y luego ya de adulta viví varios años cerca y solía venir a trotar bien temprano en las mañanas antes de irme a trabajar.

Near the entrance is the Acoustic Shell, with ample space at its feet for the comfort of the attendees. I have seen concerts here and the sound is very good, ah! the scenery too, just look at the mountain on one side.

Cerca de la entrada está la Concha Acústica, con un amplio espacio a sus pies para comodidad de los asistentes. He visto conciertos acá y el sonido es muy bueno, ah! el paisaje también, sólo miren la montaña a un lado.

The extension of this park is 82 hectares, its design is the work of the Brazilian architect and landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx and was inaugurated on January 20, 1961. For many years it has been the most visited park in Caracas, it has everything for everyone, see below the Xerophytic Garden.

La extensión de este parque es de 82 hectáreas, su diseño es obra del arquitecto y paisajista brasileño Roberto Burle Marx y fue inaugurado el 20 de enero de 1961. Desde hace muchos años es el parque más visitado de Caracas, y es que tiene de todo para todos, miren a continuación el Jardín Xerofítico.

Throughout the park you can see samples that represent the flora of the country, not only this space, there is also a Hydrophytic Garden, areas of tropical forest and several lakes surrounded by many plant species.

En todo el parque se pueden ver muestras que representan la flora del país, no sólo está este espacio, también hay un Jardín Hidrofítico, áreas de bosque tropical y varios lagos rodeados de muchas especies vegetales.

Although it was noon with the sun shining, there were some people exercising, jogging, walking and playing on the basketball courts, tennis courts, etc., this surprised me, I thought there would be no one, I think I had never come to the park on a weekday at this time.

Aunque era mediodía con sol candela, había algunas personas haciendo ejercicios, trotando, caminando y jugando en las canchas de basket, tennis, etc., esto me sorprendió, pensé que no habría nadie, creo que nunca había venido al parque un día de semana a esta hora.

In the photo below is the beginning of the jogging circuit, it was the one I used to use, I don't know how many kilometers are marked but I used to run about 2 or 3 every day, I went from Monday to Friday.

En la foto que sigue está el comienzo del circuito de trote, era el que yo utilizaba, no sé cuántos kilómetros están señalizados pero yo solía correr unos 2 ó 3 cada día, iba de lunes a viernes.

Although we are in the dry season and the trees are not as lush and there is not much grass throughout the park, this place does not lose its beauty, when you enter here you forget you are in Caracas, or maybe you imagine what this valley was like before it became a city.

Aunque estamos en temporada de sequía y los árboles no están tan frondosos ni hay demasiada grama en todo el parque, este lugar no pierde su belleza, cuando entras aquí te olvidas que estás en Caracas, o quizás te imaginas cómo era este valle antes de convertirse en ciudad.

Cities produce a lot of garbage, in the park they have placed these plastic, paper and glass collectors to contribute to recycling and environmental education.

Las ciudades producen mucha basura, en el parque han puesto estos recolectores de plástico, papel y vidrio para contribuir con el reciclaje y la educación ambiental.

I continued walking until the Avila appeared, the iconic mountain of the capital, also known as Waraira Repano. From the park there are several points to see it, and the best thing is that in many parts the vegetation covers all traces of the city, it seems that you are in the countryside.

Seguí caminando hasta que apareció el Ávila, la montaña icónica de la capital, también conocida como Waraira Repano. Desde el parque hay varios puntos para verla, y lo mejor es que en muchas partes la vegetación tapa todo vestigio de la ciudad, parece que estuvieras en el campo.

I then passed by the nursery garden and the children's playground, nearby there were some trees with flowers that looked like flames, they had a deep orange color.

Pasé luego por el vivero y por el parque infantil, cerca de allí había unos árboles con unas flores que parecían llamas, tenían un color anaranjado intenso.

A few steps further is the Boat Lake, I rushed over to see if it was running, I've always wanted to go for a ride, but no, apparently they are only open on weekends.

Unos pasos más allá está el Lago de Botes, me apuré a ver si estaba funcionando, siempre he querido montarme a dar una vuelta, pero no, al parecer sólo abren los fines de semana.

A lo lejos se vislumbra un barco, ya lo veremos de cerca...

But first, a brief visit to the zoo area. Yes, there is one here and the animals it has are from the Venezuelan fauna. Some are in captivity, in spaces designed for them, such as monkeys, felines, caimans or otters, and others are in freedom and walk around, such as ducks, peacocks, iguanas, among others.

Pero antes, una breve visita al área del zoológico. Sí, hay uno acá y los animales que tiene son de la fauna de Venezuela. Algunos se encuentran en cautiverio, en espacios diseñados para ellos, como los monos, los felinos, los caimanes o las nutrias, y otros están en libertad y pasean por ahí, como los patos, pavos reales, las iguanas, entre otros.

The monkeys are always the most visited, as it was hot at that time, most of them were under the shade of the trees and their dens.

Los monos son siempre los más visitados, como hacía calor a esa hora, la mayoría estaban bajo la sombra de los árboles y sus guaridas.

Further on I saw the jaguar, when I looked out he was sleeping, a woman and her son were making noises to wake him up, but he was not even aware, I only saw him wagging his tail for a few seconds. How annoying it must be for the animals to be objects of exhibition and to have to put up with humans yelling at them to get them to move.

Más adelante vi al jaguar, cuando me asomé estaba durmiendo, una mujer con su hijo hacían ruidos para que despertara, pero él ni pendiente, sólo lo vi mover la cola unos segundos. Qué molesto debe ser para los animales ser objetos de exhibición y tener que soportar a los humanos que les gritan para que se muevan.

But let's return to a more pleasant topic, the ship. The Leander ship, inaugurated in 2011, is the historical attraction of Parque del Este. It spent 9 months under restoration and was reopened to the public in February 2023.

Pero volvamos a un tema más agradable, el barco. El buque Leander, inaugurado en 2011, es el atractivo histórico del Parque del Este. Estuvo 9 meses en restauración y fue reabierto al público en febrero de 2023.

I have visited it but wanted to go back up, to see what was new, however it was not open. I believe that on weekdays it only receives scheduled visits (schools, high schools, etc) and on weekends it is open to the public.

Yo lo he visitado pero quería volver a subir, para ver qué había de nuevo, sin embargo no estaba abierto. Creo que entre semana sólo recibe visitas programadas (escuelas, liceos, etc) y los fines de semana es que funciona para todo público.

This replica of the ship of Francisco de Miranda, Venezuelan hero, is made in real size and copying all the details of the original.

Esta réplica del barco de Francisco de Miranda, prócer venezolano, está hecha a tamaño real y copiando todos los detalles del original.

Miranda arrived to the Venezuelan coasts with the ship Leander in 1806, it was his first expedition to these lands, and with it he wanted to achieve the liberation of the countries subjected by the Spanish crown. He also brought the proposal of a national flag, which is the tricolor that identifies the country since then.

Miranda llegó a las costas venezolanas con el buque Leander en 1806, fue su primera expedición a estas tierras, y con ella quería lograr la liberación de los países sometidos por la corona española. Además trajo la propuesta de una bandera nacional, que es el tricolor que identifica al país desde entonces.

As part of the tourism promotion plan that the government is promoting throughout the country, things like this wooden frame that you see in front of the ship have been placed in the park for people to take pictures and also the "Venezuela" sign, for the same purpose.

Como parte del plan de promoción turística que el gobierno está impulsando en todo el país, en el parque se han colocado cosas como este marco de madera que ven frente al barco, para que la gente se tome fotos y también el letrero “Venezuela”, con el mismo fin.

A rich perfume emanated from the surrounding trees, and I continued my walk, breathing deeply, as if trying to retain some of that aroma.

De los árboles alrededor emanaba un rico perfume, seguí mi recorrido respirando profundo, como tratando de retener algo de ese aroma.

I arrived at one of the cafes, there are several throughout the park, there was a group of happy children because if I heard correctly, they were going to eat ice cream 😋.

Llegué a uno de los cafetines, hay varios en todo el parque, allí estaba un grupo de niños felices porque si escuché bien, iban a comer helados 😋.

I would have liked to have a cocada (a frappe-like drink made from the pulp and milk of the coconut), but the stand was closed.

Yo hubiese querido tomarme una cocada (bebida tipo frappe hecha con la pulpa y la leche de coco), pero el puesto estaba cerrado.

So I continued my walk, and stumbled upon some new things they have installed here, for example Brinca Este, a trampoline park for kids, and next to it basketball courts and a skate park.

Así que continué mi paseo, y me topé con algunas cosas nuevas que han instalado aquí, por ejemplo Brinca Este, un parque de trampolines para niños, y al lado canchas de basket y una pista de patinaje o skatepark.

A few meters over there is one of the cultural attractions of the park, the Humboldt Planetarium, its structure is super attractive, from the side it looks like an extraterrestrial spacecraft.

Unos metros más allá está uno de los atractivos culturales del parque, el Planetario Humboldt, su estructura es súper atractiva, de perfil parece una nave extraterrestre.

Founded on July 24, 1961, it is an institution dedicated to the teaching of astronomy as well as physics, geography, earth sciences, mathematics, chemistry. Every weekend they have educational activities.

Fundado el 24 de julio de 1961, es una institución dedicada a la enseñanza de la astronomía y también de la física, geografía, ciencias de la tierra, matemática, química. Todos los fines de semana tienen actividades educativas.

The planetarium has a dome of 20 meters in diameter, there is the Zeiss Projector that allows observing the firmament with all its movements, the stars and other bodies such as the moon, the sun and several planets.

El planetario cuenta con una cúpula de 20 metros de diámetro, allí está el Proyector Zeiss que permite observar el firmamento con todos sus movimientos, las estrellas y otros cuerpos como la luna, el sol y varios planetas.

On the outside there is a propeller on display, but no information. Then since I saw that the door was open, I went in to look around. I was told that the functions and activities are on weekends, but that I could take a look at what was there at the entrance.

En la parte externa hay una hélice en exhibición, pero sin ninguna información. Luego ya que vi que estaba la puerta abierta, pasé a curiosear. Me dijeron que las funciones y actividades son los fines de semana, pero que podía echar un vistazo a lo que estaba allí en la entrada.

There is an apparatus called Meridian Circle, which according to the sign is an instrument "that serves to determine the moment of the passage of the stars through the meridian of the place". In the middle there is a model of the planetarium and on the ceiling some very striking golden lamps.

Allí hay un aparato llamado Anteojo de Pasos y Círculo Mural, que según el cartel es un instrumento “que sirve para determinar el momento del paso de los astros por el meridiano del lugar”. En el medio hay una maqueta del planetario y en el techo unas lámparas doradas muy llamativas.

There is also an installation honoring Russian cosmonaut and pilot Yuri Gagarin, who in April 1961 became the first man to go into outer space and observe the earth from there.

También hay una instalación en homenaje al cosmonauta y piloto ruso Yuri Gagarin, quien en abril de 1961 se convirtió en el primer hombre en salir al espacio exterior y observar la tierra desde allí.

I was coming to the end of my walk through Parque del Este, I passed by Lago Los Patos (Duck Lake), where I found several peacocks, ducks, other birds and an iguana, which by the way ran away when it saw me 😂.

Ya estaba llegando al final de mi paseo por el Parque del Este, pasé por el Lago Los Patos, donde me encontré varios pavos reales, patos, otras aves y una iguana, que por cierto salió corriendo al verme 😂.

I was only missing let's say, the most artistic part of the place, formed by the Sculpture Garden, Las Cortinas Fountain, Patio Los Enamorados and Patio Los Azulejos, but guess what, my phone had no more memory for photos, so I couldn't take them this time, I owe it to you, as this was an impromptu visit I had not taken my camera with me.

Sólo me faltaba digamos, la parte más artística del lugar, conformada por el Jardín de Esculturas, Fuente Las Cortinas, Patio Los Enamorados y Patio Los Azulejos, pero adivinen qué, mi teléfono ya no tenía más memoria para fotos, así que no pude retratarlos esta vez, se los debo, como esta fue una visita improvisada no había llevado mi cámara.

I sat down for a while to rest on some benches and saw several people taking a nap under the shade of the trees, how divine! And to think that a few meters away is the chaos of the city, Caracas and its deep contrasts... I hope you enjoyed my walk, see you next time!
