On Monday afternoon, some friends texted my sister to invite us the next day to a small excursion to an area of the city unknown to us. I immediately said yes, I get excited about these somewhat impromptu plans, and we agreed to meet them at 6:45 am, although in the end only I went, my sister decided not to go.
El lunes en la tarde, unos amigos le mandaron un mensaje a mi hermana para invitarnos al día siguiente a una pequeña excursión hacia una zona de la ciudad desconocida por nosotras. Yo inmediatamente dije que sí, me emocionan estos planes algo improvisados, y acordamos encontrarnos con ellos a las 6:45 am, aunque al final sólo fui yo, mi hermana decidió no ir.
I took a bus to Las Mercedes sector of La Victoria, Aragua state (Venezuela), the meeting point. My friends, Betty and her husband Johan, arrived shortly after and from there we walked to Los Maleteros neighborhood, an area I had never been to before and of which I have always heard negative things due to crime.
Tomé un autobús hacia el sector Las Mercedes de La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela), el punto de encuentro. Mis amigos, Betty y su esposo Johan, llegaron poco después y desde allí nos fuimos caminando hasta el barrio Los Maleteros, una zona a la que jamás había ido y de la que siempre se han escuchado cosas negativas debido a hechos de delincuencia.
Johan grew up in this neighborhood and his parents live there, so we stopped by their house and his mom gave us coffee, perfect to start our route more activated. From there I took the photo below, as you can see, this place is surrounded by beautiful mountains.
Johan creció en este barrio y sus padres viven allí, así que pasamos por la casa de ellos y su mamá nos dio café, perfecto para comenzar nuestra ruta más activados. Desde allí hice la foto que sigue, como ven, este lugar está rodeado por bellas montañas.
Inquiring about the origin of this community, I was told that it was founded in 1980 and was originally known as Macuayita. The Venezuelan state built social housing here to house people of limited resources.
Preguntando sobre el origen de esta comunidad, me dijeron que fue fundada en 1980 y que en un principio se conocía como Macuayita. El Estado venezolano construyó aquí viviendas de interés social para ubicar a personas de escasos recursos.
Gradually, more and more people arrived and the urbanization grew in a somewhat uncontrolled manner because they began to build houses improvisedly, this impacted, for example, at the environmental level since many built on the banks of the creek, which led to contamination from the garbage they dumped there and a potential danger to themselves, since if the water course is obstructed with solid waste, the river can overflow.
Poco a poco fueron llegando más y más personas y la urbanización creció de una manera un tanto descontrolada porque empezaron a construir casas de manera improvisada, esto impactó, por ejemplo, a nivel ambiental ya que muchos construyeron a orillas de la quebrada, lo que provocó contaminación por la basura que ahí arrojaban y un peligro potencial para ellos mismos, ya que si se obstruye el cauce del agua con desechos sólidos, el río puede desbordarse.
I didn't find information on how many people currently live here, but during the tour we did I saw that there are quite a few houses and the area has a school, a sports field, a chapel, a community house, a health center and small grocery stores. As for public services (transportation, roads, water, electricity, sanitation, etc.) I was told that there are deficiencies, what I observed the most is the garbage problem.
No encontré información de cuántas personas viven actualmente aquí, pero durante el recorrido que hicimos vi que hay bastantes casas y la zona cuenta con escuela, cancha deportiva, una capilla, casa comunal, centro de salud y pequeñas bodegas o tiendas de víveres. En cuanto a los servicios públicos (transporte, vialidad, agua, electricidad, aseo, etc) me dijeron que hay deficiencias, lo que más observé es el problema de la basura.
Before urbanization, this area was part of a hacienda where agricultural products such as bananas, tomatoes, chives, and sweet peppers, among others, were grown. Currently, many of the people who live here are dedicated to agriculture on plots of land in the mountains.
Antes de la urbanización, esta zona era parte de una hacienda donde se cultivaban productos agrícolas como cambures (bananas), tomates, cebollín, ají, entre otros. Actualmente muchas de las personas que viven acá se dedican a la agricultura en parcelas que están montaña adentro.
After this brief overview of the community, let's go now to what we came for: to get to know the nature of Los Maleteros neighborhood, something I was totally unaware of.
Después de esta breve reseña de la comunidad, vayamos ahora a lo que vinimos: conocer la naturaleza que tiene el barrio Los Maleteros, algo que yo desconocía totalmente.
At the end of the main street, you come across a small spa, I had recently seen it on the social networks of the municipal government because it was rehabilitated at the end of March by the mayor's office and the community for the Easter holiday season.
Cuando finaliza la calle principal, te encuentras con un pequeño balneario, yo lo había visto recientemente en las redes sociales del gobierno municipal porque fue rehabilitado a finales de marzo por la alcaldía y la comunidad para la temporada vacacional de Semana Santa.
I thought it was very nice and I wanted to see it live and direct 😊, as it was still very early (7:40 am) and a weekday, there was no one there, and that was what we expected, our intention was to bathe in that well and that there were not many people, but the sun had not yet risen and the water was cold.
Me pareció muy bonito y quería verlo en vivo y directo 😊, como era muy temprano aún (7:40 am) y día de semana, no había nadie ahí, y era lo que esperábamos, nuestra intención era bañarnos en ese pozo y que no hubiera mucha gente, pero aún no había salido el sol y el agua estaba fría.
So while we were deciding what to do, we took some pictures there, and Betty, with a stick she had, measured the depth, with our height we were about chest high.
Entonces mientras decidíamos qué hacer, nos tomamos algunas fotos en el lugar, y Betty, con un palo que tenía, midió la profundidad, con nuestra altura nos llegaba más o menos al pecho.
Although it could be thought that the water is stagnant, that it doesn't circulate through the bags that were placed in the well, this is not the case, underneath them there is a part where the water of the Maleteros creek continues its course.
Aunque podría pensarse que el agua está estancada, que no circula por los sacos que le colocaron al pozo, no es así, por debajo de ellos hay una parte donde se ve cómo el agua de la quebrada Maleteros sigue su curso.
Since we decided not to bathe at that time, Betty and Johan told me that we would walk so that I could get to know other wells here, I loved the idea, so we went into the mountain.
Como decidimos no bañarnos en ese momento, Betty y Johan me dijeron que caminaríamos para que yo conociera otros pozos que hay aquí, me encantó la idea, así que nos adentramos por la montaña.
Soon after, we were surrounded by the forest and the river appeared on one side, we felt a lot of freshness and rich aromas of the vegetation in the atmosphere.

Then we came across a small well that looked like a jacuzzi, it made you want to get in there, but we continued, there were more surprises a few meters away.
Luego nos topamos con un pequeño pozo que parecía un jacuzzi, daban ganas de meterse allí, pero seguimos, había más sorpresas a unos metros.
We arrive at the first river crossing, as in Venezuela we are still in summer or dry season, the water level is low and you can cross over the stones without getting your shoes wet.
Llegamos al primer cruce de río, como en Venezuela aún estamos en verano o temporada seca, el nivel del agua es bajo y puedes cruzar por las piedras sin mojarte los zapatos.
From this point on, the number of river crossings increased, and the ways to cross it, apart from stones, there were also logs.
A partir de aquí se incrementaron los pasos de río, y las formas de cruzarlo, aparte de piedras también había troncos.
The next point where we stopped was a place known as Piedra Grande (Big Stone) or La Pared (The Wall), I was amazed with its beauty. This spa has a small waterfall and some crystalline wells that form below, all surrounded by lots of vegetation.
El siguiente punto donde nos detuvimos fue un sitio conocido como Piedra Grande o La Pared, quedé sorprendida con su belleza. Este balneario tiene una pequeña cascada y unos pozos cristalinos que se forman abajo, todo rodeado de mucha vegetación.
All three of us agreed that this was the place to take a dip! Johan said he came here a lot when he was a kid and Betty also already knew it.
¡Los tres coincidimos en que este era el sitio para darnos un chapuzón! Johan dijo que venía mucho por estos lados cuando era niño y Betty también ya lo conocía.
As I approached, I saw that the rock where the waterfall falls is actually a concrete wall mixed with stone, in the central part the water has eroded it, there is a kind of moss adhered there and it looks as if everything was natural.
Al acercarme, vi que la roca por la que cae la cascada en realidad es una pared de concreto como mezclada con piedra, en la parte central el agua la ha erosionado, hay una especie de musgo adherido allí y ya parece como si todo fuera natural.
But why was this natural scenery intervened? According to Johan's recollection, the reason is that many years ago, more than 60, there was something similar to a water dam here, which was used to irrigate the crops of Hacienda La Mora, which was nearby, and other productive lands, but over time it was abandoned. Later, due to a flood of the Maleteros creek, part of the infrastructure was destroyed and it was left as we see it today. I don't know if some repairs have been made subsequently, but there are some concrete walls surrounding the site that appear to be more recent.
Pero, ¿por qué fue intervenido este escenario natural? Según lo que recuerda Johan, la razón es que hace muchos años, más de 60, había aquí algo parecido a una represa de agua, que se usaba para regar las siembras de la Hacienda La Mora, que quedaba cerca y de otras tierras productivas, pero con el tiempo fue abandonada. Luego, debido a una crecida de la quebrada Maleteros, parte de la infraestructura fue destruida y quedó como la vemos hoy. No sé si posteriormente han hecho algunos arreglos, pero sí hay unos muros de concreto que rodean el lugar que parecen ser más recientes.

I was told that when the rains start, the water level rises quite a bit, so the wells get deeper and more suitable for those who like to swim.
Me dijeron que cuando comienzan las lluvias, el nivel del agua sube bastante, así que los pozos se ponen más profundos y aptos para los que les gusta nadar.
Shall we go inside? Not yet 😂, as it was only 8:00 am, Betty and Johan asked me if I wanted to keep walking to go and see the plot they have up the mountain, and of course! It was only about 15 minutes away, but I'll show you that part in another post.
¿Nos metemos? Aún no 😂, como apenas eran las 8:00 am, Betty y Johan me preguntaron si quería seguir caminando para ir a conocer la parcela que tienen montaña arriba, y ¡claro que sí! Quedaba a sólo unos 15 minutos, pero esa parte se las mostraré en otra publicación.
So let's stay at La Pared and to the water! 😃 Since we had walked to the plot and back, the sun was out and we were already hot, the temperature of the waterfall and the wells seemed ideal for us. Of course, next time I will take some flip flops or trekking sandals to walk comfortably on the countless rocks there.
Así que quedémonos en La Pared y ¡al agua! 😃 Como habíamos caminado hacia la parcela de ida y vuelta, había salido el sol y ya teníamos calor, la temperatura de la cascada y los pozos nos pareció ideal. Eso sí, la próxima vez llevaré unas cholas o sandalias de trekking para caminar cómodamente sobre la infinidad de rocas que hay allí.
There was no one else in the spa, so it was for our exclusive use, we put things aside, and went to the waterfall to get a good massage, the water was falling quite hard. The photos below are from my friends' phones, since at that point mine had run out of memory and I couldn't take any more pictures, next time I will bring my camera so this won't happen to me.
No había nadie más en el balneario, así que fue de nuestro uso exclusivo, pusimos las cosas a un lado, y fuimos a la cascada a recibir un buen masaje, el agua caía con bastante fuerza. Las fotos que siguen son de los teléfonos de mis amigos, ya que en ese punto el mío se había quedado sin memoria y no pude hacer más fotos, la próxima vez llevaré mi cámara para que no me pase esto.
We also bathed in the well but we didn't take pictures, we stayed there for a while, especially Betty, she didn't want to get out hahaha, then we went to the sun because we got a little cold, we ate, talked and when we looked at the clock it was already 11:30, almost noon, and we decided to go back. I left super happy and grateful to Betty and Johan for having invited me to this incredible place so close to the city, I hope you liked it and if you have the opportunity to go to a natural place, take it! También nos bañamos en el pozo pero no tomamos fotos, duramos rato allí, sobre todo Betty, no se quería salir jajaja, luego nos pusimos al sol porque nos dio algo de frío, comimos, conversamos y cuando miramos el reloj ya eran las 11:30, casi mediodía, y decidimos regresar. Me fui súper contenta y agradecida con Betty y Johan por haberme invitado a este lugar increíble tan cerca de la ciudad, espero les haya gustado y si se les presenta la oportunidad de ir a un sitio natural, ¡aprovéchenla! No hay nada mejor para el cuerpo y el alma. ¡Hasta la próxima! 😉

Ya ves, lo de la basura se sufre en todos lados, creo que la situación mejoraría rápidamente con programas serios de reciclaje donde ésta tenga un valor y así la gente se motive a recogerla.
