Hey guys! Last week, my girlfriend and I decided to take a trip to the fascinating Hungarian capital, and I can't wait to share our experiences in Budapest with you. In this post, I'll take you on a walk through our first day in this fascinating metropolis, which is one of my absolute favorite cities in Europe.

Letzte Woche begaben meine Freundin und ich uns auf eine Reise in die faszinierende ungarische Hauptstadt, und ich kann es kaum erwarten, unsere Erlebnisse in Budapest mit euch zu teilen. In diesem Artikel nehme ich euch mit auf einen Spaziergang durch unseren ersten Tag in dieser faszinierenden Metropole, die zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsstädten in Europa zählt.
Our first destination on this day was the Great Market Hall. This famous building, also known as "Nagy Vásárcsarnok", was built in the late 19th century and is an architectural masterpiece with a huge cast-iron roof structure. The hall extends over three floors and houses a colourful variety of market stalls selling everything from fresh food to handmade souvenirs. The colorful hustle and bustle and the lively atmosphere immediately drew us in. We couldn't resist and tried an (unfortunately overpriced) traditional Hungarian Langos.
Unser erstes Ziel an diesem Tag war die Große Markthalle. Dieses berühmte Gebäude auch bekannt als "Nagy Vásárcsarnok", wurde im späten 19. Jahrhundert erbaut und ist ein architektonisches Meisterwerk mit einer riesigen gusseisernen Dachkonstruktion. Die Halle erstreckt sich über drei Etagen und beherbergt eine bunte Vielfalt an Marktständen, die alles von frischen Lebensmitteln bis hin zu handgefertigten Souvenirs anbieten. Das bunte Treiben und die lebendige Atmosphäre zogen uns sofort in den Bann. Wir konnten nicht widerstehen und ließen uns auch zu einem (leider überteuerten) traditionell ungarischen Langos verführen.
Only a few steps away from the market hall our way led to the impressive Liberty Bridge - also called "Szabadság híd". It was built in 1896 and is a symbol of Hungary's freedom and independence. With a length of almost 330 metres and an impressive green colour scheme, it is not only an architectural jewel, but also a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike. From the bridge, we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the Danube while snapping some photos. Afterwards, we went to the lively pedestrian zone Váci utca. We treated ourselves to a fresh chimney cake (super cheap this time) before taking the bus to the other side of the Danube.
Nur wenige Schritte von Markthalle entfernt führte unser Weg zur beeindruckenden Freiheitsbrücke - auch "Szabadság híd" genannt. Sie wurde im Jahr 1896 erbaut und ist ein Symbol der Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit Ungarns. Mit einer Länge von knapp 330 Metern und einer imposanten grünen Farbgebung ist sie nicht nur ein architektonisches Juwel, sondern auch ein beliebter Treffpunkt für Einheimische und Touristen gleichermaßen. Von der Brücke aus genossen wir einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Donau, während wir einige Erinnerungsfotos schossen. Danach ging es für uns in die lebhafte Fußgängerzone Váci utca. Wir gönnten uns einen (diesmal super günstigen) frischen Baumkuchen, bevor es mit dem Bus auf die andere Seite der Donau ging.
Arriving on the Buda side of the Danube, we made our way up the picturesque Castle Hill. The climb not only offered us a physical challenge, but also rewarded us with breathtaking panoramic views of Buda. A few minutes later we reached the magnificent Matthias Church. It was originally built in the 13th century as a Romanesque church, but underwent several transformations over the centuries. Its present appearance is in neo-Gothic style with impressive battlements and colourful roof tiles. Now the highlight of our day was just around the corner: the unique Fisherman's Bastion.
Auf der Buda-Seite der Donau angekommen, begaben wir uns auf den malerischen Burg-Hügel. Der Aufstieg bot uns nicht nur eine sportliche Herausforderung, sondern belohnte uns auch mit atemberaubenden Panoramablicken auf Buda. Einige Minuten später erreichten wir die prächtige Matthiaskirche. Sie wurde ursprünglich im 13. Jahrhundert als romanische Kirche erbaut, erfuhr jedoch im Laufe der Jahrhunderte mehrere Umgestaltungen. Ihre heutige Erscheinung präsentiert sich im neogotischen Stil mit beeindruckenden Zinnen und farbenfrohen Dachziegeln. Nun stand das Highlight unseres Tages unmittelbar bevor: die einzigartige Fischerbastei.
As we enjoyed the impressive architecture and the magnificent views from the towers of the bastion, we were more than delighted. The combination of neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements gives this place a fairytale aura that immediately captivated us. The white towers and ornate decorations made us feel as if we were in a magical fairyland - almost like a Disney castle. It was simply dreamlike to enjoy the breathtaking view of Budapest from the Fishermen's Bastion. This is undoubtedly our favourite place in the Hungarian capital.
Als wir die beeindruckende Architektur und die herrlichen Ausblicke von den Türmen der Bastei aus genossen, waren wir mehr als begeistert. Die Verbindung aus neoromanischen und neogotischen Elementen verleiht diesem Ort eine märchenhafte Aura, die uns sofort in ihren Bann zog. Die weißen Türme und kunstvollen Verzierungen ließen uns wie in einem zauberhaften Märchenland fühlen - fast wie in einem Disney-Schloss. Es war einfach traumhaft, von der Fischerbastei aus den atemberaubenden Ausblick auf Budapest zu genießen. Dies ist zweifellos unser Lieblingsort in der ungarischen Hauptstadt.
After enjoying our time at the Fishermen's Bastion, we walked down the hill towards the Danube and finally reached Batthyány Square. Here, a view of an architectural masterpiece and a true symbol of Hungarian identity awaited us. I'm talking of the imposing Hungarian Parliament Building. With its monumental size of over 268 meters in length, over 118 in width and 96 meters in height, it is the third largest parliament building in the world. When we saw the majestic building illuminated by the evening sun, we felt like we were caught in a postcard. This moment was simply magical and a perfect ending to our first day in Budapest. Nachdem wir unsere Zeit auf der Fischerbastei mehr als genossen hatten, spazierten wir den Hügel hinab in Richtung der Donau und erreichten schließlich den Batthyány Platz. Hier erwartete uns der Blick auf ein architektonisches Meisterwerk und ein echtes Symbol ungarischer Identität: das imposante ungarische Parlamentsgebäude. Mit seiner imposanten Größe von über 268 Metern Länge, über 118 Metern Breite und einer Höhe von 96 Metern ist es das drittgrößte Parlamentsgebäude der Welt. Als wir das majestätische Gebäude von der Abendsonne beleuchtet sahen, fühlten wir uns wie in einer Postkarte gefangen. Dieser Moment war einfach magisch und ein perfekter Abschluss für unseren ersten Tag in Budapest. Doch unsere Reise war noch lange nicht vorbei. Es gibt noch viel zu berichten.
