Hey guys! A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I decided to spend a beach holiday in Mexico. Since Cancun is supposed to be as overcrowded as it is overpriced and overrated (that's what I was told several times), we were looking for an affordable alternative that might be an insider tip. My girlfriend finally drew my attention to Puerto Vallarta. I had never heard of this city before, but after looking at some pictures and videos about it, I agreed to the adventure. In this article you can read about the surprising impressions I collected on this trip.
Hallo Leute! Meine Freundin und ich hatten uns vor einigen Wochen dazu entschlossen, einen Strandurlaub in Mexiko zu verbringen. Da Cancun genauso überlaufen, wie überteuert und überbewertet sein soll (so wurde es mir mehrfach berichtet), suchten wir nach einer erschwinglichen Alternative, die vielleicht ein Geheimtipp sein könnte. Meine Freundin machte mich schließlich auf Puerto Vallarta aufmerksam. Noch nie zuvor hatte ich von dieser Stadt gehört, doch nachdem ich mir einige Bilder und Videos darüber ansah, ließ ich mich auf das Abenteuer ein. Welche überraschenden Eindrücke ich dabei sammeln konnte, lest ihr in diesem Beitrag.
Puerto Vallarta has just under 300,000 inhabitants and is located in the state of Jalisco, on the west coast of Mexico. The coastal city has its own airport, which we reached after a one-hour flight from Mexico City and immediately took an Uber to our hotel in the centre. The next morning we went for our first walk around the city, which immediately surprised us with how busy the streets are and, above all, how many international tourists - mainly US-Americans - are here. We were constantly approached by vendors in English, many prices are written in US dollars and there are even ATMs that only dispense US dollars. I had never experienced such an international orientation in any other Mexican city before. If you don't speak a word of Spanish but still want to visit Mexico, this is the place for you.
Puerto Vallarta zählt knapp 300.000 Einwohner und befindet sich im Bundesstaat Jalisco, an der Westküste Mexikos. Die Küstenstadt verfügt über einen eigenen Flughafen, den wir nach einem einstündigen Flug von Mexiko City erreichten und uns per Uber gleich auf den Weg in unser Hotel im Zentrum machten. Am nächsten morgen folgte der erste Stadtspaziergang, der uns gleich damit überraschte, wie belebt die Straßen sind und vor allem, wie viele internationale Touristen - vor allem US-Amerikaner - sich hier befinden. Ständig wurden wir von Verkäufern auf Englisch angesprochen, viele Preise sind in US-Dollar angeschrieben und es gibt sogar Bankomaten, die ausschließlich US-Dollar ausgeben. Eine so internationale Ausrichtung hatte ich in keiner anderen mexikanischen Stadt zuvor erlebt. Wer kein Wort Spanisch spricht und Mexiko trotzdem besuchen möchte, ist hier genau richtig.
We continued along the promenade "Malecon" to the most popular and best-visited beach of the city called "Playa de los Muertos", which translated means beach of the dead. Nevertheless, we felt very much alive there and enjoyed the sun, the sea and a drink or two. There are many bars that offer free use of the beach chairs, sun beds and umbrellas if you consume something. This is of course very practical and ideal for keeping the holiday budget low.
Weiter ging es entlang der Flaniermeile "Malecon" zum beliebtesten und am besten besuchten Strand der Stadt mit dem Namen "Playa de los Muertos", was übersetzt Strand der Toten bedeutet. Trotzdem fühlten wir uns dort sehr lebendig und genossen, die Sonne, das Meer und den einen oder anderen Drink. Es gibt viele Bars, die eine kostenlose Benutzung der Sonnenstühle, Strandliegen und Sonnenschirme anbieten, wenn man etwas konsumiert. Das ist natürlich sehr praktisch und ideal, um das Urlaubsbudget gering zu halten.
As the sun slowly approached the horizon, we left the beach, walked along the Malecon and admired the works of art on display for Dia de los Muertos. Among them was the largest skeleton sculpture in the country. Afterwards, we enjoyed a fantastic sunset from the balcony of our hotel. Due to the orientation towards the west, you can watch the sun seemingly sink into the sea. In the evening, however, Puerto Vallarta really comes to life. We were truly overwhelmed by the cheerful party atmosphere and the crowds of visitors. We would have never expected such a tourism boom here. So much for our assumption that the city could be an insider tip...
Als sich die Sonne langsam dem Horizont zuneigte, verließen wir den Strand, spazierten den Malecon entlang und bewunderten die, anlässlich des Dia de los Muertos, ausgestellten Kunstwerke. Darunter befand sich unter anderem die größte Skelett-Skulptur des Landes. Anschließend genossen wir einen traumhaften Sonnenuntergang vom Balkon unseres Hotels. Aufgrund der Ausrichtung Richtung Westen, kann man der Sonne hier dabei zusehen, wie sie scheinbar im Meer versinkt. Abends erwacht Puerto Vallarta jedoch erst so richtig zum Leben. Wir waren von der ausgelassenen Party-Stimmung und den Besuchermassen regelrecht überwältigt. So einen Tourismus-Boom hätten wir hier niemals erwartet. So viel zu unserer Vermutung, die Stadt könnte ein Insider-Tipp sein...
We spent the following days in a similar way and came to the conclusion that Puerto Vallarta is just as fascinating as it is affordable and that the cultural side is not neglected either. All this, combined with the fact that almost everyone here speaks English, makes it the ideal destination for someone travelling to Mexico for the first time. There is also no shortage of opportunities for excursions. We took advantage of one of them, but I will tell you about that in the next post.
Die darauffolgenden Tage gestalteten wir ganz ähnlich und kamen zu dem Fazit, dass Puerto Vallarta genauso faszinierend, wie erschwinglich ist und auch die kulturelle Seite nicht zu kurz kommen lässt. All das in Kombination mit dem Fakt, dass hier fast jeder Englisch spricht, macht die Stadt zur idealen Destination für jemanden, der zum ersten Mal nach Mexiko reist. Es mangelt auch nicht an Möglichkeiten für Ausflüge. Eine davon nahmen wir wahr, doch darüber werde ich euch im nächsten Beitrag berichten.
