I've already told you about so many parts of Mexico City this year, and yet I'm far from having explored all the interesting places in this gigantic metropolis. Today I would like to introduce you to San Ángel, which offers a nice contrast to the more vibrant areas of the city with its cosy atmosphere. In this article, you will find out what else characterises this district.
Über so viele Stadtteile von Mexico City habe ich euch in diesem Jahr bereits berichtet und doch habe ich noch bei weitem nicht alle interessanten Orte dieser gigantischen Metropole erkundet. Heute möchte ich euch San Ángel vorstellen, das mit seiner gemütlichen Atmosphäre einen schönen Kontrast zu den quirligen Bereichen der Stadt bietet. Was dieses Viertel sonst noch auszeichnet, erfahrt ihr in diesem Beitrag.
My girlfriend and I began our walk at Plaza Tenanitla and started by visiting the inner courtyard and the church of the former monastery of San Jacinto. Here you find rich vegetation and cosy stone benches under trees invite you to relax, especially on hot days. The interior of the church is rather unspectacular. However, the larger and better known El Carmen Complex – another former monastery – can be visited nearby. I only found out that we had come to the wrong place when I was writing this post. Unfortunately, we had not informed ourselves well enough in advance
Meine Freundin und ich starteten unseren Spaziergang am Plaza Tenanitla und sahen uns zu Beginn gleich den Innenhof und die Kirche des ehemaligen Klosters San Jacinto an. Hier findet man üppige Vegetation und gemütliche Steinbänke unter Bäumen laden besonders an heißen Tagen zum verweilen und entspannen ein. Der Innenraum der Kirche ist eher unspektakulär. Allerdings gibt es ganz in der Nähe, den größeren und bekannteren El Carmen Complex – ein weiteres ehemaliges Kloster – zu besichtigen. Dass wir den falschen Ort erwischt hatten, fand ich aber erst beim Erstellen dieses Beitrags heraus. Hier hatten wir uns leider vorab zu schlecht informiert.
Afterwards, we walked through the markets and some of the shops in the neighbourhood. Here I noticed how quiet and calm this quarter seems. No wonder it is one of the safest and most upscale residential areas of the city. You also find numerous restaurants of the upper class. In the shops and at the market stalls, everything was about the approaching Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), which is the biggest festival of the year in Mexico.
Danach spazierten wir durch die Märkte und einige Geschäfte des Viertels. Hierbei fiel mir auf, wie ruhig und gelassen dieser Stadtteil wirkt. Kein Wunder, dass es sich dabei um eine der gehobensten und sichersten Wohngegenden der gesamten Metropolregion handelt. So findet man auch zahlreiche Restaurants der gehobenen Klasse. In den Shops und an den Marktständen drehte sich alles um den nahenden Tag der Toten (Dia de los Muertos), der in Mexiko das größte Fest des Jahres darstellt.
But San Ángel is above all THE art district of Mexico City. This is particularly obvious in the two squares Plaza San Jacinto and Plaza del Carmen, which are only a few minutes' walk from each other. Here you can find so many different, impressive arts and crafts that there really is something for everyone. We were impressed by how much creativity we found. If you are interested in art and especially painting, a walk in San Ángel is an absolute must for you. It's also a great way to get inspired if you're an artist yourself.
San Ángel ist aber vor allem DAS Künstlerviertel von Mexico City. Besonders offensichtlich wird das an den beiden Plätzen Plaza San Jacinto und Plaza del Carmen, die nur wenige Minuten Fußweg auseinander liegen. Hier findet man so viel verschiedenes, beeindruckendes Kunsthandwerk, dass wirklich für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei ist. Wir waren davon beeindruckt, wie viel Kreativität wir hier fanden. Wenn ihr euch für Kunst und vor allem Malerei interessiert, ist ein Spaziergang in San Ángel ein absolutes Muss für euch. Auch kann man sich dadurch sehr gut inspirieren lassen, wenn man selbst Künstler ist.
At the just mentioned Plaza San Jacinto, we also found the opportunity to try a very special delicacy. For only a few pesos, you could enjoy Cempasuchil ice cream there. Cempasuchil is an orange flower that is used to decorate pretty much everything in Mexico around the Day of the Dead. In conclusion, I can say that San Ángel shows a facet of the city that you probably only find in a few other places in Mexico City. I would describe the neighbourhood as the cosy, upscale counterpart to the centre of Coyoacan, which is only a few kilometres away. My tip: Visit both districts on a day trip and decide for yourself which one you like better.
Am eben erwähnten Plaza San Jacinto fanden wir auch die Gelegenheit, eine ganz besondere Spezialität zu probieren. Für nur wenige Pesos konnte man dort Cempasuchil-Eiscreme genießen. Cempasuchil ist eine orange Blume, mit der so ziemlich alles in Mexiko rund um den Tag der Toten dekoriert wird. Abschließend kann ich sagen, dass San Ángel eine Facette der Stadt zeigt, die man sonst wohl nur an nur wenigen Orten von Mexico City findet. Ich würde das Viertel als das gemütliche, gehobene Gegenstück zum nur wenige Kilometer entfernten Zentrum von Coyoacan bezeichnen. Mein Tipp: Besucht beide Viertel im Rahmen eines Tagesausflugs und entscheidet für euch, welches euch besser gefällt.
