Hello everyone! If you've read my last two posts, you probably know that I spent the last week in Hungary – mainly in Budapest – together with my girlfriend. This time, however, I don't want to tell you about the Hungarian capital, but about our day trip to Lake Balaton. We decided to take the train to Siofok - the most popular and largest holiday resort in the entire region. Just read on if you want to know how we liked it there.
Hallo zusammen! Wenn ihr meine letzen beiden Beiträge gelesen habt, wisst ihr sicher, dass ich gemeinsam mit meiner Freundin die vergangene Woche in Ungarn - hauptsächlich in Budapest verbracht habe. Diesmal möchte ich euch aber nicht von der ungarischen Hauptstadt, sondern von unserem Tagesausflug an den Plattensee berichten. Wir entschieden uns für eine Zugreise nach Siofok – dem beliebtesten und größten Urlaubsort der gesamten Region. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr wissen wollt, wie es uns dort gefallen hat.
In the morning, at 10:30 am, our train started from the old Budapest railway station "Deli Palyaudvar", which still spreads a lot of Eastern European flair. We decided to take an express train that took just 80 minutes to Siofok. Unfortunately, the train had no air conditioning, but apart from that it was clean and comfortable. We couldn't complain considering the low price. For the return journey, including seat reservation, we paid a total of 9,500 Hungarian forints or the equivalent of just under €26 for two people. As planned, we arrived in Siofok at noon.
Morgens, um 10:30 Uhr startete unser Zug vom alten Budapester Bahnhof "Deli Palyaudvar", der noch jede Menge Ostblock-Flair versprüht. Wir entschieden uns für einen Express-Zug der gerade einmal 80 Minuten für die Fahrt nach Siofok benötigte. Der Zug hatte leider keine Klimaanlage, abgesehen davon war er jedoch sauber und gemütlich. Wir konnten uns angesichts des günstigen Preises nicht beklagen. Für die Hin- und Rückfahrt inklusive Sitzplatzreservierung bezahlten wir für zwei Personen insgesamt 9.500 ungarische Forint oder umgerechnet knapp 26€. Wie geplant kamen wir mittags in Siofok an.
Siofok has a fairly long promenade that turns into a party zone in the evenings and at night. As we walked along this pedestrian zone, many memories came back to me. Back in the early 2000s, I spent many party nights here with friends. The last time I visited Siofok was in 2015. Even then, little seemed to have changed and this time, too, I noticed that time seems to stand still here. But this is not meant in a negative way. It was a pity that the promenade was still relatively uncrowded at lunchtime and we had to start our journey home before the evening hustle and bustle. But of course we were here mainly for swimming. So we walked on to the public beach.
Siofok verfügt über eine ziemlich lange Flaniermeile, die sich abends und nachts in eine Partyzone verwandelt. Als wir diese Fußgängerzone entlangspazierten, wurden bei mir viele Erinnerungen wach. Bereits in den frühen 2000ern verbrachte ich hier viele Party-Nächte mit Freunden. Zuletzt besuchte ich Siofok im Jahr 2015. Schon damals schien sich wenig verändert zu haben und auch diesmal stellte ich fest: Hier scheint die Zeit irgendwie stillzustehen. Dies ist aber absolut nicht negativ gemeint. Schade, dass die Promenade zur Mittagszeit noch relativ unbelebt war und wir unsere Heimreise vor dem abendlichen Treiben antreten mussten. Wir waren aber natürlich hauptsächlich zum Baden hier. Also spazierten wir weiter zum öffentlichen Strandbad.
At this point I have a tip for you: Bathing at Lake Balaton in Siofok is absolutely free - but only if you choose the right beach. An entrance fee is charged directly behind the beach promenade. However, I knew from the past that you just need to follow the lakeshore at the end of the pedestrian zone about 300m to the northeast to reach the free beach. Once there, we spread out our beach towel on the shady lawn, enjoyed the summer weather and bathed in the shallow, calm waters of the lake.
An dieser Stelle ein Tipp: Am Balaton in Siofok zu baden ist absolut kostenlos - aber nur wenn man den richtigen Strand aussucht. Direkt hinter der Strandpromenade wird nämlich Eintritt verlangt. Aus der Vergangenheit wusste ich jedoch, dass man dem Seeufer am Ende der Fußgängerzone einfach nur ca. 300m nach Nordosten folgen muss, um den kostenlosen Strand zu erreichen. Dort angekommen breiteten wir unser Strandtuch auf der schattigen Liegewiese aus, genossen das sommerliche Wetter und badeten im seichten, ruhigen Wasser des Sees.
Here are a few facts about Lake Balaton and Siófok: Lake Balaton is the largest inland lake in Central Europe and covers an area of about 592 square kilometres. Its average depth is only about 3-4 metres, the maximum depth about 12 metres. Siofók is located on the southern shore of Lake Balaton and is considered the capital of the lake with its 25,000 inhabitants. Overall, Lake Balaton and Siófok are an attractive destination for both Hungarians and international visitors, offering a combination of nature, leisure activities and culture.
Hier mal ein paar Fakten zum Balaton und zu Siófok: Der Balaton ist der größte Binnensee Mitteleuropas und erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von etwa 592 Quadratkilometern. Seine durchschnittliche Tiefe beträgt nur etwa 3-4 Meter, die maximale Tiefe etwa 12 Meter. Siofók liegt am südlichen Ufer des Balatons und gilt mit seinen 25.000 Einwohnern als die Hauptstadt des Sees. Insgesamt sind der Balaton und Siófok sowohl für Ungarn als auch für internationale Besucher ein attraktives Reiseziel, das eine Kombination aus Natur, Freizeitaktivitäten und Kultur bietet.
In the late afternoon we got hungry and visited one of the countless restaurants in town. I tried a kind of cherry beer, which was very tasty. But here I discovered a difference compared to the old days. Unfortunately, the price level in Siófok has also risen significantly. 35€ for two main courses and two drinks is absolutely no bargain, especially for Hungary. Nevertheless, you can still have a cheaper holiday here than in many other countries. We treated ourselves to an ice cream in the pedestrian zone before we walked back to the station and took the train back to Budapest at 6pm. Our conclusion: a day trip from the Hungarian capital to Lake Balaton is definitely worth it!
Am späten Nachmittag wurden wir hungrig und besuchten eines der unzähligen Restaurants der Stadt. Ich probierte eine Art Kirsch-Bier, das sehr lecker war. Hier entdeckte ich dann aber doch einen Unterschied zu früheren Zeiten. Leider ist das Preisniveau auch in Siófok deutlich gestiegen. 35€ für zwei Hauptspeisen und zwei Getränke sind vor allem für Ungarn absolut kein Schnäppchen. Trotzdem kann man hier auf jeden Fall noch günstiger Urlaub machen, als in vielen anderen Ländern. Wir gönnten uns noch ein Eis in der Fußgängerzone, bevor wir satt und zufrieden zurück zum Bahnhof spazierten und den Zug zurück nach Budapest um 18 Uhr nahmen. Unser Fazit: Ein Tagesausflug von der ungarischen Hauptstadt zum Balaton zahlt sich auf jeden Fall aus!
