Hello guys! As you can see from the title of this post, I'm back in my second home, Mexico City. The size of the largest city in North America is hard to put into words and means that even after many months in Mexico's capital, I still haven't explored all the main sights. Yesterday, my girlfriend and I visited the gigantic university quarter, also called UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and larger than many small towns. In the following paragraphs, you can read about what we saw and experienced there.
Hallo Leute! Wie ihr am Titel dieses Beitrags erkennen könnt, bin ich mal wieder in meiner zweiten Heimat, Mexico City. Die Ausmaße der größten Stadt Nordamerikas sind kaum in Worte zu fassen und sorgen dafür, dass ich auch nach vielen Monaten in Mexikos Hauptstadt noch immer nicht alle Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten erkundet habe. Gestern besuchten meine Freundin und ich das gigantische Universtitäts-Viertel, auch UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) genannt, das zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe gehört und größer ist, als so manche Kleinstadt. Was wir dort gesehen und erlebt haben, lest ihr in den folgenden Absätzen.
Our first stop was the 72,000-seat Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Highlights such as the Olympic Games in 1968 and the Football World Cup in 1986 have already taken place here. Unfortunately, we could only see the stadium from the outside, so we continued walking towards the main campus of the university. On the way, we found the first bus stop of the so-called Pumabús. Here, I really became aware of the dimensions of the complex. There is actually a separate bus system with no less than 13 lines, just for the university district alone.
Unsere erste Station war das 72.000 Zuschauer fassende Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Hier fanden bereits Highlights, wie die Olympischen Spiele 1968 oder die Fussball Weltmeisterschaft 1986 statt. Leider konnten wir das Stadion nur von außen besichtigen und so spazierten wir weiter in Richtung des Hauptcampus des Universitätsgeländes. Auf dem Weg fanden wir die erste Bushaltestelle des sogenannten Pumabús. Hier wurden mir die Ausmaße des Geländes so richtig bewusst. Es gibt tatsächlich ein eigenes Bus-System mit nicht weniger als 13 Linien, nur für das Universitäts-Distrikt allein.
Our way led us further to the landmark of the whole area - the central library. Here you can find the largest collection of books (almost 600,000) in all of Mexico. However, the building is most famous for its artfully designed façade. The walls depict different eras of Mexican history. In addition to the central administration building, some of the total of about 40 different faculties and institutes of the complex are located around the main campus. But to go into further detail here would go beyond the scope of this article.
Unser Weg führte uns weiter zum Wahrzeichen des gesamten Geländes - der zentralen Bibliothek. Hier findet man die größte Sammlung an Büchern (fast 600.000) in ganz Mexiko. Berühmt ist das Gebäude aber für seine kunstvoll gestaltete Fassade. Die Mauern bilden verschiedene Epochen der mexikanischen Geschichte ab. Neben dem zentralen Verwaltungsgebäude befinden sich um den Haupt-Campus herum einige der insgesamt ca. 40 verschiedenen Fakultäten und Institute des Geländes. Doch hier weiter ins Detail zu gehen, würde den Rahmen des Beitrags sprengen.
Now we wanted to visit the sculpture park, but unfortunately it was closed. On the way, however, I learned something incredible again. The district has its own police force. The Mexico City police have no jurisdiction here. It really is almost a completely autonomous city within the city. Our next stop was the MUAC (Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo), which we explored from the outside and inside. As a fan of modern architecture, I felt particularly well here.
Nun wollten wir den Skulpturenpark besuchen, der jedoch leider geschlossen hatte. Auf dem Weg erfuhr ich aber wieder etwas Unglaubliches. Das Gelände hat nämlich seine eigene Polizei. Die Polizei von Mexiko Stadt ist hier nicht zuständig. Es handelt sich wirklich fast um eine komplett autonome Stadt in der Stadt. Unser nächster Stopp war das MUAC (Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo), das wir von außen und innen besichtigten. Als Fan moderner Architektur fühlte ich mich hier besonders wohl.
Our last stop was the National Biodiversity Pavilion, whose futuristic silver façade already fascinated us on the way there. But the interiors are also more than impressive. Here you can see lots of preserved animals and especially insects. Another highlight is the white spiral staircase that connects the three floors. It's really amazing what you can see here with free admission.
Unsere letzte Station war der nationale Pavillon der biologischen Vielfalt, dessen futuristische, silberne Fassade uns bereits auf dem Weg dorthin faszinierte. Doch auch die Innenräume sind mehr als beeindruckend. Hier kann man jede Menge konservierter Tiere und vor allem Insekten betrachten. Ein Highlight ist auch die weiße Wendeltreppe, die die drei Stockwerke miteinander verbindet. Wirklich erstaunlich, was man hier bei freiem Eintritt alles geboten bekommt.
On the way back, we saw many more interesting buildings and institutes that are certainly worth a visit. You could probably spend a whole week exploring the entire university area. For our day trip, however, we were satisfied with the impressions we had gathered. Once again, I was able to discover a new face of Mexico City. I can't emphasise enough how versatile this metropolis is and I'm looking forward to telling you more about it in the upcoming weeks.
Auf dem Rückweg sahen wir noch viele weitere interessante Gebäude und Institute, die sicher auch einen Besuch wert sind. Man könnte wohl eine ganze Woche damit verbringen, das gesamte Universitäts-Gelände zu erkunden. Für unseren Tagesausflug waren wir aber zufrieden mit den gesammelten Eindrücken. Wieder konnte ich eine neue Facette von Mexiko City entdecken. Ich kann nicht oft genug unterstreichen, wie vielseitig diese Metropole ist und freue mich darauf, euch in den kommenden Wochen weiter von hier zu berichten.
