Hello everyone! As promised in the last post, I would like to continue sharing my experiences in Mexico City with you. One of the main sights and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Mexican capital I had totally neglected so far. But that changed two days ago, because this time a day trip to Xochimilco was finally on the agenda. In this article, I would like to tell you why my expectations of this place were exceeded by far.
Hallo zusammen! Wie im letzten Beitrag versprochen, möchte ich euch weiter von meinen Erlebnissen in Mexiko City berichten. Eine absolute Hauptsehenswürdigkeit und UNESCO Weltkulturerbe-Stätte der mexikanischen Hauptstadt hatte ich bisher total vernachlässigt. Doch das änderte sich vor zwei Tagen, denn diesmal stand endlich ein Tagesausflug nach Xochimilco auf dem Programm. Warum meine Erwartungen an diesen Ort bei weitem übertroffen wurden, möchte ich euch in diesem Beitrag erzählen.
Basically, our day trip consisted of three sections. First, we visited the huge plant market of Xochimilco. This is the largest of its kind in all of Latin America. Here you can find everything you can imagine about gardening. For me, of course, much of it was exotic and therefore particularly interesting. The bright green vegetation against the backdrop of a blue sky made for beautiful contrasts in my photos on this lovely summer day. In between, my girlfriend and I treated ourselves to a fresh coconut and I had to find out that salt and lemon really do belong on every snack in Mexico. Yes, even on coconut meat - a crazy taste experience.
Im Großen und Ganzen bestand unser Tagesausflug aus drei Abschnitten. Zu Beginn besuchten wir den riesigen Pflanzen-Markt von Xochimilco. Dabei handelt es sich um den größten seiner Art in ganz Latein-Amerika. Hier findet man alles, rund um das Thema Gärtnern, was man sich vorstellen kann. Für mich war natürlich vieles davon exotisch und somit besonders interessant. Die strahlend grüne Vegetation vor dem Hintergrund eines blauen Himmels sorgte an diesem sommerlichen Tag für schöne Kontraste auf meinen Fotos. Zwischendurch gönnten meine Freundin und ich uns eine frische Kokosnuss und ich musste feststellen, dass Salz und Zitrone in Mexiko wirklich auf jeden Snack gehören. Ja, auch auf Kokosnussfleisch - ein verrücktes Geschmackserlebnis.
We then walked to the highlight of Xochimilco, the place for which the district is actually known and popular - both with locals and tourists. I'm talking about the countless canals that you can explore on the traditionally colourful, unique boats - also called Trajineras. It was still quite early on this Sunday and so the boat docks and market stalls still seemed relatively deserted. But this soon changed to the absolute opposite. Originally, there was a huge lake in Xochimilco. The 150km long canals and numerous islands that give the district the name "Venice of Mexico" are a more or less a remnant of this.
Im Anschluss spazierten wir zum Highlight von Xochimilco, dem Ort für das das Stadtviertel eigentlich bekannt und beliebt ist - sowohl bei Einheimischen, als auch bei Touristen. Ich spreche von den unzähligen Kanälen, die man auf den traditionell bunten, einzigartigen Booten - auch Trajineras genannt - durchqueren kann. Es war noch recht früh an diesem Sonntag und so wirkten die Bootsanlegestellen und Marktstände noch relativ verlassen. Dies änderte sich aber bald zum absoluten Gegenteil. Ursprünglich gab es einen riesigen See in Xochimilco. Die insgesamt 150km langen Kanäle und zahlreichen Inseln, die dem Stadtteil den Namen "Venedig Mexikos" verleihen sind quasi ein Überbleibsel davon.
Basically, you have two options if you want to cross the canals. You can rent a tourist boat, which costs 900 pesos (49 US dollars) per hour including tip for the boat driver. This is quite an expensive affair if you are not travelling with a large group. The second option is actually an insider tip. Because there is also a public boat that costs just 45 pesos (2.45 US dollars) per person. Here you can go as long as you like, because it docks at different places. Of course, we chose this option and so we started the wild ride through the waters of Xochimilco.
Grundsätzlich hat man zwei Möglichkeiten, wenn man die Kanäle durchqueren möchte. Man kann sich ein Touristen-Boot mieten, das inklusive Trinkgeld für den Bootsführer 900 Pesos (46€) pro Stunde kostet. Dies ist eine ziemlich teure Angelegenheit, wenn man nicht gerade mit einer großen Gruppe unterwegs ist. Die zweite Möglichkeit ist eigentlich ein Geheimtipp. Denn es gibt auch ein öffentliches Boot, das gerade einmal 45 Pesos (2,30€) pro Person kostet. Hier kann man mitfahren solange man möchte, denn es legt an verschiedenen Stellen an. Natürlich entschieden wir uns für diese Option. Und so starteten wir den wilden Ritt durch die Gewässer Xochimilcos.
During the trip, I noticed how many other types of boats are on the move in the canals. These are floating stalls that approach the tour boats and sell various foods, drinks and souvenirs. On many trajineras, mariachi - the traditional Mexican musicians - also provide entertainment. During our trip, it soon became so crowded and chaotic that the boats were constantly bumping into each other. It was a unique, floating festival that is hard to describe or to capture in pictures. I personally had never experienced anything like that before. Later, however, we also passed through calmer waters and moored at an island with residential houses and a village character before finally making our way to the centre of Xochimilco.
Während der Fahrt bemerkte ich erst, wie viele weitere Arten von Booten in den Kanälen unterwegs sind. Dabei handelt es sich schwimmende Verkaufsstände, die sich den Ausflugsbooten annähern und verschiedene Speisen, Getränke und Souvenirs verkaufen. Auf vielen Trajineras sorgen auch Mariachi - die traditionell mexikanischen Musikanten für Unterhaltung. Während unserer Fahrt wurde es bald so überfüllt und chaotisch, dass die Boote ständig aneinanderkrachten. Es war ein einziges, schwimmendes Volksfest, das sich kaum beschreiben oder auf Bildern festhalten lässt. Ich persönlich hatte so etwas noch nicht erlebt. Später fuhren wir aber auch durch ruhigere Gewässer und legten an einer Insel mit Wohnhäusern und dörflichem Charakter an, bevor wir schließlich zum Zentrum von Xochimilco vorstießen.
Xochimilco was once an independent city, but over time, like many other districts, it was swallowed up by the metropolis of Mexico City. The walk through the centre of Xochimilco formed the third and last part of our day trip. Also here, I felt the uniqueness of this place at every turn. Nothing reminds you that you are in a metropolis of millions. Here you feel like you are in a medium-sized, independent, old Mexican town.
Xochimilco war früher einmal eine eigenständige Stadt, doch wurde im Laufe der Zeit, wie so viele andere Stadtviertel, von der Metropole Mexiko City quasi verschlungen. Der Spaziergang durch das Zentrum von Xochimilco bildete den dritten und letzten Teil unseres Tagesausflugs. Auch hier spürte ich die Einzigartigkeit dieses Ortes auf Schritt und Tritt. Nichts erinnert daran, dass man sich in einer Millionen-Metropole befindet. Hier fühlt man sich, wie in einer mittelgroßen, eigenständigen, mexikanischen Altstadt.
On our walk, we passed through numerous street markets and market halls. There was so much to see, hear, smell and taste. This once again provided me with a sensory overload, as I already knew from other experiences in Mexico. What a day! I am still processing the many different and sometimes totally crazy impressions. But that's Mexico and that's why this country is so incredibly fascinating. I'm glad if you've read this long post this far. Auf unserem Spaziergang durchquerten wir zahlreiche Straßenmärkte und Markthallen. Hier gab es so unglaublich viel zu sehen, hören, riechen und schmecken. Dies sorgte bei mir wieder einmal für eine Reizüberflutung, wie ich sie bereits von anderen Erlebnissen in Mexiko kannte. Was für ein Tag! Ich bin noch immer dabei, die vielen verschiedenen und teilweise total verrückten Eindrücke zu verarbeiten. Aber das ist Mexiko und darum ist dieses Land so unglaublich faszinierend.
